Policy Costs: Six Charges and Net Amount at Risk

"IUL is expensive" is the objection clients raise most and the one new agents answer worst. Not because the charges are high, but because nobody has ever walked them through all six.

Policy Costs

Presented by Team Rise

Hello everyone, we're Team Rise. Today's set is about policy costs: what an indexed universal life policy actually deducts every month, how each charge is calculated, where to find it in the illustration, and how we answer when a client asks about cost.

Why spend a whole session on cost? Because "IUL is expensive" is the objection clients raise most, and the one new partners answer worst. Usually not because the charges really are high, but because we've never taken them apart and checked each one against an illustration ourselves. Today we do exactly that.

There are five parts. Part one: why anything that runs has a cost, and the six charges that make up a policy's cost. Part two: the first four charges, each worked through on a real illustration. Part three: the fifth, the cost of insurance, which is the heart of today, the net amount at risk, and the two death benefit options it leads to, level and increasing. Part four: the sixth, what each rider costs. And last, the seven questions clients ask most, with an answer for each.

Every illustration screenshot today comes from National Life's Living Life Defender, or LLD. The rates and figures reflect the schedule at the time this was prepared and may change; before quoting a client anything, always go by the current illustration.

Open by asking: "Raise your hand if a client has told you IUL is expensive. What did you say?" Have two or three partners share, note their answers, and come back to them in the last part on objections.

Why Anything Costs Something

A car: fuel or charging, insurance, servicing, annual registration
A home: utilities, rent or mortgage, property tax, upkeep, homeowner's insurance
A business: payroll, inventory, bills, liability cover, rent or loan, sundries

Before we talk about policy charges, let's put one piece of common sense on the table: anything that's running has a cost.

A car needs fuel or charging, insurance, servicing, and an annual registration fee. Nobody says a car is a bad buy because it needs gas. A home comes with utilities, rent or a mortgage, property tax, upkeep and homeowner's insurance. A business has payroll, inventory, bills, liability cover, rent or a loan on the premises, and a long list of sundries.

The point of this slide is to get the client nodding: "Right, everything has a cost." Once they agree, the conversation stops being "are there charges?" and becomes "where do the charges go, and are they worth it?" Those are questions we can answer.

Presenter note

The more everyday you make this, the better. Ask the room: "Roughly what does your car cost you a year in gas, insurance and servicing?" A number they say themselves persuades more than any argument from us.

Financial Products Have Costs Too

Rental property: management, agent commission, property tax, HOA, insurance
Stocks and funds: management fees, trading costs, emotional cost
Bank CDs: opportunity cost (low rates), early-withdrawal penalty
Credit cards: annual fee, interest, transaction fees

Everyday things have costs, and so do financial products. They just take different forms.

Rental property: management fees, the agent's commission when you buy or sell, property tax, HOA dues, insurance. Stocks and funds: management fees, trading costs, and an often-forgotten "emotional cost": selling when the market drops and chasing when it rises. That timing loss is frequently bigger than the management fee. A bank CD looks free, but it carries an opportunity cost, a low rate, plus a penalty if you take the money out early. A credit card has an annual fee, interest and transaction fees.

Taken together, these two slides come down to one sentence: the difference isn't whether there are charges, it's whether you can see them and whether they're worth it. Next, let's see exactly what an IUL's charges are.

Compliance

When comparing other products, stick to the fact that every product has costs. Don't say any company or product "rips people off" or "hides things."

Add up everything an IUL charges and you get these six. Today we go through them in this order.

One, the premium load, called the Premium Expense Charge or Premium Load: a percentage of each premium you pay. Two, the per-unit expense charge, called the Expense Charge or Per Unit Charge: based on the face amount, and charged only for a set number of early years. Three, the policy fee: a flat amount per policy per month. Four, the accumulated value charge: a very small percentage of the cash value in the account. Five, the cost of insurance, or COI: what you pay for the death benefit, and the most important item today. Six, the cost of other benefits: whichever riders you added, you pay for those.

A rough grouping first, which we'll verify one by one: the premium load, per-unit expense charge, policy fee and accumulated value charge all have rates written into the contract and follow fixed rules. The cost of insurance is the one that moves with age and the net amount at risk. Rider charges depend on what you chose.

Where to Find the Charges

Policy Charges and ExpensesIllustration software → Reports → tick Policy Charges and Expenses

国家人寿计划书软件 Life Illustrations 的 Reports 页面:左边菜单红框标出 Reports,右边报告列表里红框标出 Policy Charges and Expenses(保单成本);左下角 Summary Values 列着 Minimum Premium $2,214、Minimum Guaranteed Flex Premium $2,262、Target Premium $6,618、Guideline Level $8,784、Guideline Single $139,039、Max Non-MEC Premium $32,904 / National Life's Life Illustrations software, Reports screen: Reports is boxed in the left menu, and Policy Charges and Expenses is boxed in the report list; the Summary Values panel shows Minimum Premium $2,214, Minimum Guaranteed Flex Premium $2,262, Target Premium $6,618, Guideline Level $8,784, Guideline Single $139,039 and Max Non-MEC Premium $32,904

First question: where do you actually see these charges? Plenty of partners have run dozens of illustrations without ever seeing the charges page, because it isn't printed by default.

In National Life's illustration software, once the case is set up, click Reports in the left menu and the list of printable reports appears on the right. Scroll to "Policy Charges and Expenses," tick it, and click Run Reports. The illustration then includes several pages of year-by-year charges: one column per charge, one row per year.

While you're here, note the Summary Values panel at the bottom left. A few of its numbers come up later: the Guideline Level premium, the Guideline Single premium, and the Max Non-MEC premium. We'll come back to them in the section on the increasing death benefit.

The charges pages are for us to check our own work. You can open them with a client and walk through them, but be clear that it's an illustration, not a guarantee; actual deductions are whatever the policy's annual statement shows.

LLD 计划书 Policy Charges and Other Expenses Policy Charges $1,978 / LLD illustration, Policy Charges and Other Expenses page (male 0, standard non-tobacco, $1M face, level, $500 a month, California): the header is split into premium − policy charges + interest = cash value, with the seven charge columns boxed in red; total policy charges in year 1 are $1,978

Case: male 0 · standard non-tobacco · $1M face · level · $500 a month · California

This is what the charges page looks like. First, memorize the formula in the title: premium, minus policy charges, plus interest, equals cash value. The whole table runs left to right in that order.

On the far left are the policy year and age, then Premium Outlay, the premium paid each year: $6,000 in this case. Inside the red box are the policy charges, seven columns: premium load, cost of insurance, other benefits, policy fee, expense charge, accumulated value charge, and an Enhancer charge column, which belongs to charge six, riders. The last column in the box, Policy Charges, is the year's total. To the right come the credits: Interest Credit from the index, Enhancer Bonus from the rider, and Total Credits. On the far right is the result: accumulated value, surrender charge, cash surrender value and death benefit.

The case is a baby boy, standard non-tobacco, $1M face, level death benefit, $500 a month, California. Year one: $6,000 in, $1,978 in charges. Clients often tense up here: "Nearly $2,000 out of $6,000?" Hold on. We're about to take it apart column by column, and you'll see the biggest column is charged for only ten years, while the cost of insurance column is actually falling.

Same illustration (male 0 · $1M · $6,000 a year) · totals as printed; where they differ from the sum by $1, it's rounding

Pull the seven columns out of that red box, put a few years side by side, and the pattern jumps out.

In years 1 to 10, the total runs about $1,900 to $2,000 a year. The biggest column is the expense charge, $1,163 a year, more than half of it; next is the premium load at $480. The cost of insurance is $252 in year one and falls steadily after that, to $73 by year ten.

Now look at the highlighted year 11: the expense charge drops to zero, the premium load falls from $480 to $300, and the total plunges from $2,049 to $746. In other words, the early years are expensive mainly because of two front-loaded charges, and once ten years pass the load lightens dramatically. That's why an IUL has to be planned as a long-term holding; surrendering in the early years is where people lose the most.

One column is slowly growing: the accumulated value charge, from $11 to $456. Not because the rate changed, but because there's more money in the account; it's a percentage, so more money means a bigger charge. We'll work it out in detail under charge four.

Ask: "Why does the total drop by over $1,300 in year 11? Which two columns changed?" Let partners find the expense charge and the premium load in the table themselves.

Premium Expense Charge / Premium Load

红框那一行:Percent of Premium Expense Charge,8.00%。

Charge one, the premium load, called the Premium Expense Charge or Premium Load. On the left is the Data Section at the back of the illustration; every illustration has one. This one is a 40-year-old woman, $500,000 face, best class. The highlighted row reads: Percent of Premium Expense Charge, 8.00%.

Its calculation is the simplest of all: the load is the premium times a percentage. On LLD it's 8% in years 1 to 10 and 5% from year 11. Each premium has this percentage taken off as it arrives; only the rest goes into the cash value. In a year with no premium, this charge is zero.

Where does it go? Mainly three things: state guaranty assessments, the share insurers pay into each state's guaranty fund; first-year commission; and the cost of putting a policy on the books.

With a client you can put it like this: "Of every dollar you pay, 8 cents for the first ten years, and 5 cents after that, goes to these costs; the rest goes into your account."

Working Out the Premium Load

同一份计划书的费用页,红框圈出 Premium Expense Charge 一栏:第 1–10 年每年 $480,标注「前 10 年:$6000 × 8% = $480」;第 11 年起每年 $300,标注「第 11 年开始:$6000 × 5% = $300」 / The same charges page with the Premium Expense Charge column boxed: $480 a year in years 1–10, labelled $6,000 × 8% = $480; $300 a year from year 11, labelled $6,000 × 5% = $300

第 11 年起:$6,000 × 5% = $300Year 11 on: $6,000 × 5% = $300

Back to the baby boy's illustration; look at the boxed Premium Expense Charge column. The premium is $6,000 a year. Times 8% for the first ten years gives exactly $480, year after year; from year 11 it's times 5%, which is $300.

This is the easiest charge of the six to verify; your arithmetic will match the illustration to the dollar. It's also the best first step in building a client's trust: work this one out in front of them and they see that the numbers aren't arbitrary, they come from a formula.

One design point while we're here: the load is charged on premium, so for the same face amount, funding more raises the dollar amount, but the percentage stays the same. Putting more in doesn't make it "more expensive"; it's simply proportional.

Premium Expense Charge?

Charged for 10 years only
Covers: underwriting, medical exams, renewal commission, marketing, contracting, compliance and other overhead

Expense Charge / Per Unit Charge

Charge two, the per-unit expense charge, called the Expense Charge or Per Unit Charge. "Per unit" means per thousand dollars of face amount. In the Data Section, the boxed row: Monthly Expense Charge, $135.40 a month, or $1,624.80 a year.

Its rate depends on four things: age, sex, face amount and underwriting class. A higher face means more units and a bigger charge; an older insured means a higher rate per unit.

The key point: on LLD, the expense charge runs for 10 years only; from year 11 it's zero. It covers the costs of issuing and maintaining the policy early on: underwriting, medical exams, renewal commission, marketing, contracting, compliance and other overhead. Those costs are front-loaded, so they're recovered in the first ten years.

So in the seven-column table earlier, the main reason costs are high for ten years and then fall off a cliff in year 11 is this charge.

At 40: $135.40 a month, $1,624.80 a year. At 53: $278.75 a month, $3,345 a year. Thirteen years later, this charge has roughly doubled. Over ten years, that's about $16,000 versus about $33,000.

This is the most direct evidence for "the earlier, the cheaper," and it's a number written into the contract, not a sales line. When we reach the last question, "does buying at 35 versus 55 really matter?", you can flip back to this slide.

Compliance

Say "under the same conditions, this rate is higher at an older age." Don't push with "the price goes up if you wait." Whether and when to buy is the client's decision.

Expense Charge: 10 Years Only

0 岁男、$100 万、标准等级的费用页:红框圈出 Expense Charge 一栏,第 1–10 年每年 $1,163,第 11 年起为 0;标注 $1,163 ÷ 12 = $96.92 / Charges page for a male 0, $1M, standard class: the Expense Charge column is boxed, $1,163 a year in years 1–10 and 0 from year 11, labelled $1,163 ÷ 12 = $96.92

11,630Male 0 · $1M · standard: $1,163 ÷ 12 = $96.92 a month · $11,630 over 10 years

Back to the baby boy, $1M face, standard class. The boxed column is the Expense Charge: $1,163 a year in years 1 to 10, which divided by 12 is $96.92 a month.

Now look at the circled year 11, age 10: the column goes to zero and stays there. The ten years add up to $11,630, and that's the whole of this policy's expense charge; it's never charged again.

Notice that the baby boy's $1,163 a year is lower than the 40-year-old woman's $1,624.80, even though his face amount is twice hers. At a young age the rate per thousand is far lower, which is why front-end costs give the most value on a child's policy.

When a client asks why the early years cost so much, point at this column: "This is the bulk of it, and it's gone after year ten."

Policy Fee

Charge three, the policy fee. The simplest of the six: in the Data Section, the boxed Monthly Policy Fee, $6.00.

It has nothing to do with age, sex, face amount or class. Every policy pays the same: $6 a month, $72 a year, for as long as the policy is in force. It covers administration and maintenance: statements, customer service, systems, record-keeping.

With a client: "It's like a monthly account fee at a bank: $6 a month, fixed, written into the contract." Clients usually get this one immediately and don't push back.

Policy Fee: $72 a Year

同一份计划书的费用页,红框圈出 Policy Fee 一栏:第 1 年到第 14 年每年都是 $72 / The same charges page with the Policy Fee column boxed: $72 every year from year 1 to year 14

6 × 12 = $72, every single year

Find the Policy Fee column on the charges page: $72 in year one, $72 in year two, and $72 all the way to year 14. However long the policy stays in force, there's a $72 in this column for every year. $6 times 12 months is exactly $72.

So far we've verified three charges: the premium load, the expense charge and the policy fee. Each comes from one simple multiplication and matches the illustration.

0.04% a month = 0.48% a year
For 25 years
Covers: the insurer's investment and hedging costs

Accumulated Value Charge

数据页红框:Monthly Percent of Accumulated Value Charge,每月 0.04%。

Charge four, the accumulated value charge. In the Data Section, the boxed row: Monthly Percent of Accumulated Value Charge, 0.04%.

Unlike the first three, which are based on premium or face amount, this one is based on the cash value in the account: each month, cash value times 0.04%, which over 12 months is 0.48% a year. On LLD it runs for 25 years and is zero from year 26.

It pays for the insurer's investment and hedging. An IUL can credit "0% at worst when the index falls, up to the cap when it rises" because the insurer buys options with part of the money as a hedge, while investing most of it in steady assets such as bonds. All of that costs something, and this charge pays for it.

With a client: "About half a percent a year to manage the account's investments and its floor." Next to the 0.5% to 1% a year many funds charge, that gives the client a frame of reference. But it's only a sense of scale; don't claim it's "cheaper than a fund."

4. AV Charge: Where the Money Is Invested

NLV Financial Corporation and Subsidiaries 资产分配饼图(As of December 31):最大块是公司债券 Corporate Bonds,其次是有抵押证券 Asset/Mortgage Backed Securities,再是商业地产 Commercial Real Estate、住宅整笔贷款 Residential Whole Loan、地方政府债券、有限合伙人股份、私募证券、政府投资、现金及其等价物和其他;脚注:Other 包括保单贷款、衍生品、非关联普通股、房地产和住房税收抵免 / NLV Financial Corporation and Subsidiaries asset allocation pie chart, as of December 31: corporate bonds are the largest slice, followed by asset- and mortgage-backed securities, then commercial real estate, residential whole loans, municipal bonds, limited partnerships, private placements, governments, cash and equivalents, and other; a footnote says other includes policy loans, derivatives, unaffiliated common stock, real estate and housing tax credits

National Life (NLV Financial) annual report · asset allocation · the original shows no year

The accumulated value charge pays for "investing and hedging," so where does the insurer put the money? This is the asset allocation chart from the annual report of NLV Financial, National Life's parent.

The biggest slice, in orange, is corporate bonds, close to half. The second, in green, is asset- and mortgage-backed securities. Then commercial real estate loans and residential whole loans; further down, municipal bonds, limited partnerships, private placements, government bonds and a little cash. The footnote's "other" covers policy loans, derivatives (the options used for hedging), a small amount of stock, real estate and housing tax credits.

One point to make clearly: the client's money isn't invested directly in the stock market. The insurer holds it mainly in fixed-income assets such as bonds and uses part of the yield to buy options. When the index rises, the option gains are credited to the client's account by formula; that's where index interest comes from. The cost of running all of that is the accumulated value charge.

AV Charge: 25 Years Only

0 / Two sections of the charges page side by side, with the Accumulated Value Charge column boxed: $11 in year 1, $104 in year 5, $262 in year 10, $456 in year 14; $513 in year 15, $857 in year 20, $1,181 in year 25; zero in year 26, age 25

0Year 1 $11 → year 25 $1,181 → $0 from year 26

Watch how this column moves. On the left, years 1 to 14: $11 in year one, $104 in year five, $262 in year ten, $456 in year 14. On the right it continues: $513 in year 15, rising to $1,181 in year 25. Now the circled row at the bottom right, year 26, age 25: it drops to zero.

Why does it keep rising? Not because the rate went up; it's 0.04% a month throughout. It's because the account keeps growing. A percentage of a bigger base is a bigger number. Put it to a client the other way round: this charge getting bigger is proof the account has grown.

From year 26 it stops; however large the account gets after that, this charge is zero. So over the long run, of the four "administrative" charges, the expense charge ends after ten years and the accumulated value charge after 25, leaving only the $72 policy fee and the load on any premium paid.

AV Charge Worked Out: Year 6

AV charge
End of year 5$24,446$104
End of year 6$30,419$132

Using the year-end $30,419 × 0.48% = $146.01 overstates it: the charge comes out monthly on that month's value, and the value is lower early in the year

Now let's work one out. Same baby boy illustration, the year 6 row. The cash value at the end of year 6 is $30,419, and the illustration's accumulated value charge for year 6 is $132.

The obvious method is $30,419 times 0.48% for the year, which gives $146.01. But that's $14 more than the illustration's $132. Why? Because this charge isn't taken once at year end; it's 0.04% of that month's value, every month. At the start of year 6 the value was only last year's ending $24,446, and it climbed month by month to $30,419. Multiplying by the year-end figure assumes the account held that much all year, so it overshoots.

A closer method: average the start and end, $24,446 plus $30,419 divided by 2, about $27,430; times 0.48% is about $132, which matches the illustration.

What I want you to remember here isn't the formula, it's a habit: when your figure is a little off from the illustration, first ask whether it's because the charge is monthly. Don't jump to "the illustration is wrong," and don't tell a client "it's roughly this." On the next slide we use a real monthly statement and get it to the cent.

Presenter note

The original Canva slide reads "$30,419 × 0.48% = $146.01." The arithmetic is right, but it doesn't match the table's $132. The web version uses the start-and-end average and explains the gap.

Excerpt from a real policy's annual statement (Aug 2024–Jul 2025) · policy number and name omitted

This is the "Policy Transactions Summary by Policy Month" from a real policy's annual statement: one row per month, one column per charge. We've pulled out three months and the year's totals. This policy is funded at $500 a month.

The columns first: premium, $500; premium load, $40, exactly 8% of $500, confirming charge one again; the accumulated value charge, a little over a dollar; the cost of insurance, around twenty dollars; other charges, a fixed $162.30 every month, the fixed deductions that are the same each month; and on the far right, the month-end value.

Now December's accumulated value charge. Last month's ending value was $3,713.52. Take off this month's cost of insurance, $20.67, and other charges, $162.30, leaving $3,530.55; times 0.04% is $1.41, exactly what the statement shows for December. January works the same way: $3,989.21 minus $20.67 minus $162.30, times 0.04%, is $1.52. It matches too.

This slide shows two things. First, the accumulated value charge is calculated and deducted monthly. Second, it's calculated after the month's other charges come out, so its base is a little below the account balance. Every charge has a formula, and every one reconciles to the cent. When a client asks "what exactly are you charging me?", open their own statement and point to these columns one by one. Nothing you could say works better.

NAR = $1M − $1M = 0

Before charge five, the cost of insurance, we need one concept, the most important formula today: face amount minus cash value equals the net amount at risk, or NAR.

Why that way? Say the face is $1M and the account already holds $150,000 of cash value. If the insured dies, $150,000 of the $1M paid to the family was the policy's own money; what the insurer actually pays from its own pocket is $850,000. That $850,000 is the insurer's risk, and the cost of insurance is charged only on that part.

The case: a baby girl, $1M face, $150 a month for 15 years, illustrated at 6.5%. In year one the cash value is just $500, so almost the whole amount is at risk: $999,500. In year 20 the cash value is $25,000 and the NAR $975,000. In year 50, $150,000 of cash value and $850,000 at risk. By year 81 the cash value reaches $1M, equal to the face, and the net amount at risk is zero.

The chart on the left shows exactly that: the flat line on top is the face amount, the curve rising from below is the cash value, and the gold area between them is the net amount at risk, narrowing over time.

Presenter note

The chart is a schematic drawn through the four points on the slide; the curve between them isn't the illustration's year-by-year figures. 0 岁男、$100 万、每年 $6,000 的费用页,红框圈出 Cost of Insurance 一栏:第 1 年 $252、第 2 年 $147、第 3 年 $126、第 4 年 $103、第 5 年 $93,第 6–10 年 $90、$78、$77、$74、$73,第 11–14 年 $71、$69、$83、$105 / Charges page for a male 0, $1M, $6,000 a year, with the Cost of Insurance column boxed: $252 in year 1, then $147, $126, $103, $93; $90, $78, $77, $74, $73 in years 6–10; $71, $69, $83, $105 in years 11–14

Year 1 $252 → year 12 $69: older every year, yet the COI falls

Back to the baby boy's illustration, the cost of insurance column. Most people assume the cost of insurance climbs every single year: the older you get, the more it costs. Let's look at the actual numbers.

Year one, $252; year two, $147; then $126, $103, $93, $90, $78, $77, $74, $73, down to $69 in year 12. The child grows from 0 to 11, and the cost of insurance falls from $252 to $69, under a third of where it started.

Why? Two reasons, and we should be clear about both. First, the mortality table itself: infants have a higher death rate in the first year than toddlers do, and from about age one or two to around ten is the lowest-mortality stretch of a whole life, so the rate per thousand is falling anyway. Second, the net amount at risk from the last slide: with $6,000 going in every year, the cash value grows and the part the insurer carries shrinks year by year.

By years 13 and 14, ages 12 and 13, it turns back up to $83 and $105, because mortality rises in the teenage years. So the accurate statement is: the cost of insurance isn't about age alone; it's the net amount at risk times the rate for that age, and both drive it.

Compliance

Don't say "an IUL's cost of insurance gets cheaper and cheaper." Say: "The cost of insurance is charged on the net amount at risk; if the cash value grows well, the amount at risk shrinks and can offset part of the increase that comes with age."

Put the last two slides together and you get this conclusion. Please memorize it word for word: the higher the cash value, the lower the net amount at risk, and the lower the cost of insurance.

The cost of insurance is the net amount at risk times the rate per thousand, and there are two forces in it. One pushes up: the older you are, the higher the rate per thousand, as on any life policy. One pushes down: as the cash value grows, the net amount at risk shrinks. Together, they partly cancel out. On a well-funded policy, the cost of insurance can rise slowly, or even fall for a stretch; in the year the cash value reaches the face, the net amount at risk is zero and so is the cost of insurance.

The reverse needs saying too: if it's underfunded and the account can't grow, the amount at risk stays large while age keeps rising, the cost of insurance gets heavier and heavier, and it can eventually drain the account. That's why we always stress funding fully and early, which is what the "fund faster" slides coming up are about.

5. Cost of Insurance

计划书 Data Section 的 Guaranteed Basis of Calculations:Mortality Table 一行写着 2017 CSO Ultimate Table, Age Nearest Birthday, Female, Composite;下面是 Table of Guaranteed Maximum Cost of Insurance Rates(每千元每月),53 岁 0.21614、60 岁 0.41193、76 岁 2.18060、83 岁 4.90628、99 岁 30.79575、106 岁 54.67996 / Data Section, Guaranteed Basis of Calculations: the mortality table row reads 2017 CSO Ultimate Table, Age Nearest Birthday, Female, Composite; below it, the Table of Guaranteed Maximum Cost of Insurance Rates per $1,000 per month: 0.21614 at 53, 0.41193 at 60, 2.18060 at 76, 4.90628 at 83, 30.79575 at 99 and 54.67996 at 106
Set by age, sex, face amount and class
(2017 CSO)Priced off the 2017 CSO mortality table
Covers: the cost of the death risk
COI = NAR × rate per $1,000

Cost of Insurance (COI)

Now charge five proper: the cost of insurance, COI. It buys the death benefit itself, the part that makes life insurance life insurance.

Its rate depends on the same four things as the expense charge: age, sex, face amount and class. The basis is a mortality table; LLD uses the 2017 CSO table, the standard table used by US actuaries and regulators. The screenshot on the left is the "Guaranteed Basis of Calculations" in the Data Section: the mortality table row reads 2017 CSO Ultimate Table, age nearest birthday, female, composite (smokers and non-smokers combined).

Below it is the table of guaranteed maximum COI rates, per thousand dollars at risk, per month: 21.6 cents at 53, 41.2 cents at 60, $2.18 at 76, $4.91 at 83, $30.80 at 99, $54.68 at 106. These are the contractual ceilings; what's actually charged is the current rate, which is usually lower.

The formula once more: COI = net amount at risk × rate per thousand. The rate depends on age; the amount at risk depends on cash value. Together they explain why the cost of insurance in that illustration fell before it rose.

Have the room work one: at 83, with $100,000 at risk, what's the most that can be charged in a month at the guaranteed maximum rate? (100 × $4.90628 ≈ $490.63.) Then: what if cash value grows so only $20,000 is at risk? (About $98.)

5. COI: People Are Living Longer

Life expectancy at birth, years · CDC National Center for Health Statistics

Why does using the 2017 table matter? Look at the chart on the left, from the Society of Actuaries: the blue line is the 2001 CSO table, the red line the 2017 one. At every age from 30 to 70, the 2017 death rate is lower than the 2001 rate; by 70 it's roughly 25 versus 35 per thousand.

Lower death rates mean lower COI rates per thousand. A policy priced on the new table has a more favourable cost of insurance than one priced on the old table more than a decade ago.

The table on the right shows the long-run trend behind it: US life expectancy at birth was under 60 in 1930, 62.9 in 1940, 69.7 in 1960, and 78.8 by 2019, 76.3 for men and 81.4 for women. As people live longer, mortality tables come down. Women consistently outlive men by four or five years, which is why, other things equal, a woman's cost of insurance is lower.

Presenter note

The original Canva table is headed "2020" with 78.9 / 76.1 / 81.1, which doesn't match any single year in CDC data; 2020 itself was 77.0 because of the pandemic. The web version uses the CDC's pre-pandemic 2019 figures (78.8 / 76.3 / 81.4). The 1960, 1940 and 1930 columns in the original are correct.

Does COI Always Rise with Age? Further Out

同一份计划书第 15–35 年,红框圈出年龄和 Cost of Insurance:14 岁 $147;15–19 岁 $216、$308、$411、$511、$570;20–24 岁停缴后 $592、$609、$612、$613、$615;30–34 岁 $405、$409、$445、$548、$692;现金值第 25 年 $255,349、第 31 年 $382,503,身故赔付第 32 年起超过 $100 万($1,023,581) / The same illustration, years 15–35, with age and Cost of Insurance boxed: $147 at 14; $216, $308, $411, $511, $570 at 15–19; after premiums stop, $592, $609, $612, $613, $615 at 20–24; $405, $409, $445, $548, $692 at 30–34; cash value $255,349 in year 25 and $382,503 in year 31, with the death benefit above $1M ($1,023,581) from year 32

Age 24 $615 → age 30 $405: six years older, a third less COI

Same illustration, further out: years 15 to 35. This case funds for 20 years at $6,000 a year, $120,000 in all, with nothing paid from year 21.

From 15 to 19, the cost of insurance rises fast, from $216 to $570, because mortality climbs steeply for young men from the teens into the early twenties; age is winning here. From 20 to 24 it barely moves: $592, $609, $612, $613, $615. Age is still rising, but the cash value is over $200,000 and the amount at risk is shrinking; the two forces roughly cancel.

Now age 30: $405. A third less than at 24, though six years older. By now the cash value is close to $400,000 and only around $600,000 is at risk. That's the most direct evidence that the cost of insurance doesn't necessarily rise with age.

Finally, at 31 to 34 the cost turns up again: $409, $445, $548, $692. Look at the death benefit on the far right: from year 32 it's above $1M. That's a tax-law rule: when the cash value gets too large relative to the face amount, the death benefit must rise with it for the policy to keep qualifying as life insurance. Once the death benefit rises, the amount at risk stops shrinking, and the cost of insurance follows age upward again. With this, partners can read why the death benefit grows on its own in the later years of an illustration.

Pacing

This slide is dense. Take it in three age bands: rising at 15–19, flat at 20–24, lower at 30. If newer partners lose the tax-law point, skip it for now and come back to it in the level-versus-increasing section.

If more cash value means a lower cost of insurance, the next question is: with the same money, is it better to put it in sooner?

Same baby girl, $1M face, 6.5%. This time $450 a month for just five years. That's $450 × 12 × 5 = $27,000, exactly the same as $150 a month for 15 years, just three times as fast.

The result: year one, $3,800 of cash value and $996,200 at risk; year 20, $45,000 and $955,000; year 50, $310,000 and $690,000; and in year 68 the cash value reaches the face and nothing is at risk. Against the $150-a-month version: at year 50, $310,000 versus $150,000, more than double; and the year the cash value catches the face moves from 81 to 68, thirteen years sooner.

The reason is the chain we just built: money in sooner means a higher starting cash value, a slightly smaller amount at risk, and a slightly smaller cost of insurance; what isn't charged stays in the account earning interest, so next year's cash value is higher and the risk smaller still, and so on down the line.

For the first twenty years the two lines look similar, both hugging the bottom; but the gap keeps widening: $310,000 versus $150,000 at year 50. The solid line touches the face line in year 68; the dashed line not until year 81. The distance between each curve and the face line is its net amount at risk, and the solid version's is smaller every year, so its cost of insurance is lower every year too.

This brings us to one of the most important design choices on an IUL: the death benefit option. There are two, A and B. This slide is Option A, level: the face amount stays the same.

Level means the death benefit is the fixed face amount, $1M here, however much the cash value grows. So the more the cash value grows, the smaller the amount at risk and the lower the cost of insurance: the chain we've been describing all along.

This case funds six years at $450 a month, one more year than the last slide, $32,400 in all. Year one: $3,800 of cash value, $996,200 at risk. Year 20: $58,000 and $942,000. Year 50: $410,000 and $590,000. In year 63 the cash value reaches $1M and nothing is at risk.

Level is the default for most accumulation-focused IULs, and once the client starts taking income it has to be level. Why will be clear after Option B on the next slide.

NAR stays at $1M

Option B,Increasing,

Option B, increasing. The death benefit is the original face plus the cash value at the time. With a $1M original face and $200,000 of cash value, the death benefit is $1.2M.

It sounds great: the more cash value, the more the family receives. But look at the two lines: the death benefit line rises with the cash value, and the gap between them never narrows. In other words, the net amount at risk is always $1M; it doesn't shrink as the cash value grows.

If the amount at risk never shrinks, the "more cash value, lower cost" chain breaks. Age rises, the risk stays put, and the cost of insurance can only climb with age. So for the same premium, Option B always costs more in insurance than Option A, and the cash value grows more slowly.

So why does Option B exist? Because it does one very useful thing: it raises the ceiling on how much you can put in. The next three slides cover that.

Presenter note

The chart is a schematic with no specific figures; only the relationship matters: the death benefit line is $1M plus cash value, and the gap stays $1M.

Increasing: A Higher Guideline Level Premium

6.5%Female 40 · $500K face · best class · 6.5%

Tax-law limits on the illustrationA 保额不变A LevelB 保额增加B Increasing

Guideline Single Premium$139,039$139,039

累计上限追上单笔上限Cumulative limit passes single limit约第 16 年≈ year 16约第 6 年≈ year 6

Far fewer years to reach the limit → more allowed each year → premium goes in faster and more cash value builds

Some background first. Life insurance grows tax-deferred because the tax code treats it specially, and so the tax code also limits how much a policy can hold. Put in too much and the policy either stops qualifying as life insurance or becomes a MEC, where withdrawals are taxed first. Those limits are listed in the Summary Values panel at the bottom left of the illustration.

The case: a 40-year-old woman, $500,000 face, best class. Three numbers. The Guideline Single Premium, $139,039, think of it as the most you can have in at the start. The Guideline Level Premium, an annual allowance that adds up year by year. And the Max Non-MEC Premium, $32,904, the most you can pay in a year without the policy becoming a MEC.

The cumulative limit is the greater of the single premium and the level premium times the number of years. With a level death benefit the level premium is $8,784 a year; $139,039 divided by $8,784 is about 16 years before the running allowance passes the single limit. Until then, once you've put in $139,039 you can't add more. With an increasing death benefit the level premium becomes $23,400 a year; divide and it catches up in about six years, so from year six you can keep funding.

So Option B's real purpose is to enlarge the annual allowance so premium goes in faster and more cash value builds. The price is what we just covered: a higher cost of insurance. The next two pairs of cases show both sides.

The Canva original labels the single premium "every 13–16 years" and B "about every 6 years." From this slide's numbers, level is $139,039 ÷ $8,784 ≈ 15.8 years and increasing ÷ $23,400 ≈ 5.9 years, so the web version says about year 16 and about year 6.

Now one set of identical conditions with only the death benefit option changed, to see how different the ending is. The conditions: a 40-year-old woman, $1M face, best class, illustrated at 6.5%, $13,236 a year for ten years, $132,360 in all.

This slide is level. Go straight to the last rows of the ledger: years 76 to 81, ages 115 to 120, the policy is still in force, and the cash value climbs from $6.69M to $9.40M at 120. The death benefit equals the cash value because the cash value passed the $1M face long ago, and the tax rule we saw earlier lifted the death benefit along with it.

A caution: this assumes 6.5% every single year, and figures past age 100 are only there to show whether the policy holds up, not to suggest the client will receive millions. What we care about is that the level version stays in force all the way to 120.

IncreasingSide by Side: Increasing

Same conditions: female 40 · $1M · best class · 6.5% · $13,236 a year for 10 years · increasing

同样条件的 LLD 计划书,Death Benefit Option B (Increasing):累计保费同为 $132,360;87 岁现金值 $600,529、身故赔付 $1,600,529,之后逐年下降,96 岁现金值 $52,659,97 岁 Lapse 断保;标注「同样的保费,保单在 97 岁时断保,因为保险成本更高」 / The same LLD case with Death Benefit Option B (Increasing): cumulative premium again $132,360; at 87 the cash value is $600,529 and the death benefit $1,600,529, both falling every year after, to $52,659 of cash value at 96 and a lapse at 97; labelled same premium, the policy lapses at 97 because the cost of insurance is higher

Same premium, same person, same 6.5%; only the option changes, to increasing.

Look at age 87: $600,000 of cash value and a $1.6M death benefit, which is $1M plus $600,000. But from here the cash value falls every year: $588,000 at 88, $536,000 at 90, $283,000 at 94, only $53,000 at 96, and at 97 the policy lapses.

Why? Because the increasing option always has $1M at risk. In the late eighties and nineties, the rate per thousand is very high; $1M at risk times that rate costs more each year than the account earns, so the account is eaten away. The level version's amount at risk shrank to zero long before, so at the same ages it pays almost nothing for insurance.

Together, these two slides are today's most important lesson: same money, wrong option, and one policy is still in force at 120 while the other lapses at 97. A lapse doesn't just end the coverage; if there are loans outstanding, it can also trigger a large tax bill.

Interaction

Don't give the answer first. Ask: "Same money; how old do you think the increasing version lasts to?" Let people guess, then reveal the age-97 row.

保额不变的 LLD 计划书:第 1–4 年每年 $32,904,第 5 年 $7,423,累计 $139,039,之后到第 20 年都是 0,标注「后面到 16 年左右都无法继续存更多钱」;按 6.81% 演示,61 岁现金值 $404,428、身故赔付 $517,668,90 岁现金值 $2,987,572、身故赔付 $3,136,951 / Level LLD illustration: $32,904 a year in years 1–4 and $7,423 in year 5, $139,039 in all, then nothing through year 20, labelled no more can be added until about year 16; at 6.81%, cash value $404,428 and death benefit $517,668 at 61, and $2,987,572 and $3,136,951 at 90

Now the funding-room side. Same 40-year-old woman, $500,000, best class; this time the goal is to put in as much as possible, funding the annual maximum every year.

Level: $32,904 a year in years 1 to 4, the maximum non-MEC premium, then $7,423 in year 5, totalling exactly $139,039, the limit. From year 6 the premium column is all zeros, and nothing more can go in until about year 16. Even if the client has the money and wants to add more, the policy can't accept it.

The result: about $404,000 of cash value at 61 and about $2.99M at 90. Note that this ledger's illustrated rate column reads 6.81%, while the increasing version on the next slide reads 6.50%. The two aren't on exactly the same assumptions, so we use them only to show one thing: whether more money can go in.

保额增加的 LLD 计划书:第 1–4 年每年 $32,904、第 5 年 $7,423,第 6 年 $1,361,第 7–10 年每年 $23,400,累计 $234,000,标注「从第 6 年左右又可以开始继续存更多钱」;按 6.50% 演示,61 岁现金值 $619,423、身故赔付 $1,119,423,90 岁现金值 $4,134,060、身故赔付 $4,634,060 / Increasing LLD illustration: $32,904 a year in years 1–4, $7,423 in year 5, $1,361 in year 6 and $23,400 a year in years 7–10, $234,000 in all, labelled funding can resume from about year 6; at 6.50%, cash value $619,423 and death benefit $1,119,423 at 61, and $4,134,060 and $4,634,060 at 90

Increasing: the first five years are the same, reaching $139,039 by year 5. But from year 6 the premium column has numbers again: $1,361 in year 6, then $23,400 a year in years 7 to 10, for $234,000 over ten years, nearly $95,000 more than the level version.

Why $1,361 in year 6? Six years of allowance is $23,400 × 6 = $140,400; minus the $139,039 already in, that leaves exactly $1,361. After that it's a full $23,400 each year.

The result: about $619,000 of cash value at 61 and about $4.13M at 90. To be fair, much of the difference comes from putting in $95,000 more, not from the option itself. The point of this slide is that when a client has the money and wants more in during the early years, the increasing option creates that room.

When to Use the Increasing Option

The client explicitly asks for it
The client needs to put more premium in quickly
Before income starts, switch to level
The switch is done by the agent; it doesn't happen on its own

Having seen both sides, the conclusion is these few rules.

One, the client explicitly asks for it, for instance wanting the family to receive the face amount plus all the cash value at death. Two, the client needs to put more premium in during the early years and the level option's limit isn't enough. Outside those two cases, default to level.

Three is the one that matters most: when income starts, switch to level. During the income years money is flowing out of the account; if the full face is still at risk, the cost of insurance gets heavier and heavier, which is exactly the lapse-at-97 case we saw.

And the switch doesn't happen by itself; the agent has to do it by submitting a change request. So for any client on the increasing option, note it clearly in their file, raise it at every annual review, and make the switch before income begins. Forgetting it is planting a time bomb in the client's policy.

Cost of Other Benefits

Charge six, the cost of other benefits. The first five apply to every policy; this one is optional. Whatever riders you add, you pay for those; add none and it's zero. In the baby boy's illustration this column was $0 throughout because nothing was added.

The six riders commonly used on LLD: the Balance Sheet Benefit, BSB; the Guaranteed Flex Rider, GFR, free for 10 years and paid for 20, 30 or 40; the Enhancer series for extra interest; Premium Chronic Care, PCC, not currently available in California or New York; waiver of premium, WOP; and the Combo MultiChoice rider, CMC. The longer GFR periods, Enhancers below $1M of face, and CMC are designs National Life built into LLD for the PFA channel.

For each rider we'll look at two things: what problem it solves, and where its charge shows up in the illustration and how much it is. More riders isn't better; each one deducts money every month, so choose them by what the client needs.

Internally we can say "PFA only." With clients, say "here's what this rider on National Life's LLD says"; never "no one else has it" or "only we have it."

BSBBalance Sheet Benefit Rider (BSB)

The first rider, the Balance Sheet Benefit, BSB. In the illustration software, click Riders on the left; set the top line, Balance Sheet Benefit, to Yes, then enter a BSB Percentage below it, the share of the surrender charge you want waived, up to 100%.

First, what a surrender charge is: for roughly the first ten years of an IUL, surrendering the policy means the insurer deducts a surrender charge from the cash value, because its early costs haven't been recovered yet. So in the early years there's a gap between the accumulated value and the cash surrender value. BSB pays a small monthly charge to waive that gap.

Why "balance sheet"? It was designed for business owners: a company-owned policy's surrender value goes on the balance sheet, and early surrender charges drag it down. With BSB, the surrender value equals the accumulated value from year one. For individuals, it suits people worried they might need the money in the early years, who value liquidity.

187Year 1: surrender value up $9,298, accumulated value down $187

The same 40-year-old client funding the maximum, once without BSB and once with 100% BSB, side by side.

Without BSB: in year one the accumulated value is $29,428 but the surrender value only $19,943, a gap of nearly $9,500, which is the surrender charge; even in year six the gap is close to $4,800. With 100% BSB: from year one the two are identical, $29,241 in year one.

Where's the cost? The accumulated value column: with BSB it's $187 lower in year one and $516 lower by year six, the rider charge plus the interest it would have earned. So the trade-off is clear: pay a little each year for the flexibility to take out the full cash value at any time in the early years. If the client is sure the money won't be touched for ten years, skip it; if they might need it midway, or the policy sits on a company's books, it's worth the peace of mind.

Presenter note

In this case the surrender charge only exists for about the first ten years, and BSB is only charged during that time. On the GFR slide you'll see BSB drop out of the rider charges from year 11.

BSB: What It Costs

Waives the percentage of policy surrender charges specified by the policy owner 百分比:100% · 月费:$15.05Percentage amount: 100% · Monthly charge: $15.05

15.05 a month = $180.60 a year

Varies slightly by policy

What does BSB actually cost? The rider description in the illustration: Balance Sheet Benefit Rider, form series ICC11-20015, waiving the percentage of surrender charges the owner specifies. This one is set to 100%, with a monthly charge of $15.05.

$15.05 times 12 is $180.60 a year. That lines up with the $187 lower accumulated value in year one on the last slide: about $180 in rider charges plus the little interest that money would have earned.

Note "varies slightly by policy": the BSB charge depends on the face amount, age and the percentage chosen, so this figure belongs to this case only. When quoting a client, go by their own illustration.

GFRGuaranteed Flex Rider (GFR)

10 years: free

20 / 30 / 40 years: paid

计划书软件 Riders 页面:Guaranteed Flex 选 Yes,GFR Period 下拉选项 10、20、30、40 Years,标注「10 年免费,20/30/40 年需付费」;左下 Summary Values 红框标出 Minimum Guaranteed Flex Premium (MGP) $2,433,标注「最低保证保费」 / Illustration software Riders screen: Guaranteed Flex set to Yes, with the GFR Period drop-down offering 10, 20, 30 or 40 years, labelled 10 years free, 20/30/40 paid; in Summary Values, Minimum Guaranteed Flex Premium (MGP) $2,433 is boxed and labelled minimum guarantee premium

The second rider, the Guaranteed Flex Rider, GFR. In Riders, set Guaranteed Flex to Yes; the GFR Period below offers 10, 20, 30 or 40 years. Ten years is free; 20, 30 and 40 carry a charge.

What does it protect? An IUL's cash value moves with the market and the charges; after several 0% years the cash value might not cover the deductions, and the policy could lapse. GFR says: as long as you pay the required "minimum guaranteed flex premium," the policy won't lapse during the guarantee period even if the cash value falls short. The boxed figure at the bottom left, the Minimum Guaranteed Flex Premium, or MGP, $2,433 here, is that funding condition.

Who is it for? Clients who put protection first and worry about a long weak market, or clients funding modestly with coverage as the main goal. Choose the period to match how many years the client needs the coverage guaranteed.

What does a 40-year GFR cost? This illustration: a 40-year-old woman, $500,000, best class, $6,618 a year, with both 100% BSB and a 40-year GFR.

The "Cost of Other Benefits" column is $331 a year in years 1 to 10. Broken down: BSB at $15.05 a month and the 40-year GFR at $12.50 a month, $27.55 together; times 12 months is $330.60, which rounds to $331. From year 11 it drops to $150: BSB is only charged during the first ten years, while there's a surrender charge, and then it stops, leaving the GFR at $12.50 a month, $150 a year.

And on the far right, the surrender charge is $0 every year because of the 100% BSB, which also confirms what we said about the previous rider.

To a client: "About $150 a year buys 40 years in which, as long as you pay the guarantee premium on time, a bad market can't make the policy lapse." Whether to add it depends on how much the client values that certainty of coverage.

The original screenshot shows the client's real name, so the web version uses a table instead. The Canva slide says "an extra premium of $150 a year"; strictly, it's a rider charge deducted from cash value, not a separate premium.

高级护理条款 PCC(加州、纽约不可用)Premium Chronic Care (Not Available in CA/NY)

Not Available in CA/NY,加州和纽约暂时不能开。

The third rider, Premium Chronic Care, PCC. "NA CA/NY" in the title means Not Available in California or New York; it can't currently be added there.

It's at the bottom of the Riders screen, in Accelerated Benefits Riders, under "Additional Cost ABRs," the accelerated benefit riders that carry a charge. Set Premium Chronic Care to Yes, then choose a Benefit Payout Option of 2% or 4% monthly.

Note the words "Additional Cost": National Life's standard chronic, critical and terminal illness accelerated benefits carry no charge; PCC is a paid upgrade. What it upgrades is the subject of the next slide.

Presenter note

The full treatment of PCC is in the Living Benefits set; here we cover only its cost. PCC can't be combined with a retirement plan, Gap Protector or CMC.

PCC: What It Adds Over the Free Rider

每位被保险人最高额度Maximum per insured所有生前福利合计最高 $150 万$1.5M across all living benefits最高 $300 万Up to $3M

Applies
None

PCC costs money, so what does it add over the free chronic illness rider? One table, five rows.

Row one, the cap: under the free rider, all living benefits combined are capped at $1.5M per insured; PCC goes up to $3M. Row two, issue ages: the free rider covers 0 to 85; PCC 18 to 75, a narrower window.

Row three is the key one, the payout: the free rider is discounted at claim, so it pays less than face; PCC pays 2% or 4% of the death benefit each month, undiscounted. Row four: both are subject to the IRS per diem limit. Row five, the waiting period: 30 days for the free rider, none for PCC.

So PCC's charge buys three things: a higher cap, an undiscounted payout, and no waiting period. For clients with chronic illness in the family or worried about long-term care costs, those are real; for a young client mainly saving, the free rider is usually enough.

PCC: What "Undiscounted" Is Worth

LLD 计划书摘要:40 岁女性、$500,000 保额;65 岁时 Premium Chronic Care 2% 每月 $10,000,提前给付条款的慢性疾病每月 $7,276,末期疾病一次性 $427,546,重疾、重伤最高 $392,707,阿兹海默 $370,094 / LLD illustration summary for a 40-year-old woman with $500,000 face: at 65, Premium Chronic Care at 2% pays $10,000 a month versus $7,276 a month under the chronic ABR, $427,546 terminal, up to $392,707 critical illness or injury, $370,094 Alzheimer's

*可能受 IRS 金额限制,超过每日限额的部分可能要缴税,请客户问会计师*May be limited by the IRS; amounts above the per diem may be taxable, so the client should ask their accountant

Here's what "undiscounted" is worth in numbers. This is the summary of an LLD illustration: a 40-year-old woman, standard non-tobacco, $500,000 face, with PCC at 2%.

PCC's arithmetic is simple: face × 2%, so $500,000 × 2% is $10,000 a month; at 4%, $20,000 a month. Compare the discounted monthly payout under the free chronic rider in the same illustration: $5,468 a month at 55, $7,276 at 65, $7,901 at 75, $8,458 at 85. Same chronic illness at 65: $10,000 a month with PCC, $7,276 with the free rider, a difference of over $2,700 a month.

One reminder: monthly benefits above the IRS per diem limit may be taxable, which the 4% option in particular can exceed; the client should ask their own accountant.

PCC: Where the Cost Shows Up

Premiums − policy charges + interest = cash value

LLD 计划书 Policy Charges and Other Expenses 页:40 岁女性、$500,000 保额,第 1–5 年每年保费 $7,425;红框标出 Cost of Other Benefits 一列,第 1 年 $306 到第 14 年 $399 / LLD illustration Policy Charges and Other Expenses page: female 40, $500,000 face, $7,425 a year in years 1–5; the Cost of Other Benefits column boxed in red, from $306 in year 1 to $399 in year 14

Where does PCC's cost show up? The same formula, the same charges page. This illustration is a 40-year-old woman, $500,000, $7,425 a year for ten years, with PCC. The boxed column is Cost of Other Benefits: $306 in year one, $340 in year five, $370 in year ten, $399 in year 14, a little more each year.

Why does it creep up? Because PCC is priced like the cost of insurance, by age and risk: the older the insured, the likelier a chronic illness, so the higher the rate. From year 11 this client pays no premium, yet the column keeps deducting, from the cash value.

Make this point clearly to clients: rider charges don't stop when premiums stop; they're one of the policy's regular monthly costs. When you design the illustration, the funding has to cover these charges for decades.

PCC: Charges Continue After Premiums Stop

Premiums − policy charges + interest = cash value

同一份计划书:70–74 岁已不交保费,Cost of Other Benefits 仍为每年 $453 到 $436;105–109 岁降到 $77、$62、$40、$6、$0 / The same illustration: at ages 70–74 no premium is paid, yet Cost of Other Benefits is still $453 to $436 a year; at 105–109 it falls to $77, $62, $40, $6 and $0

Further along the same table, two boxed ranges: ages 70 to 74, and 105 to 109.

At 70 to 74, premiums ended long ago, still $74,250 in total, yet PCC is still being charged: $453, $450, $446, $442, $436 a year. Interestingly, it's already heading down. By 105 to 109 it's $77, $62, $40, $6, and finally $0.

Why does it get cheaper with age? The net amount at risk again: PCC pays out part of the death benefit, and as the cash value approaches the face, the extra money the insurer has to put up keeps shrinking, so the rider charge falls too. This slide confirms "more cash value, lower cost" once more, this time on a rider charge.

Riders → Waiver of Premium:Yes → Amount OptionIllustration software Riders → Waiver of Premium: Yes → Amount Option

The fourth rider, waiver of premium, WOP. In Riders, set Waiver of Premium to Yes; the Amount Option below offers four ways to waive.

One, Monthly Deductions: if the insured becomes totally disabled, the insurer pays the policy's monthly administrative charges and cost of insurance, so it can't lapse for lack of funds, but no new money goes into the account. Two, Minimum Premium: the insurer pays the minimum premium, $2,620.80 a year here. Three, Maximum Benefit: it pays the Guideline Level Premium, $8,784 a year here, so the account keeps growing as planned. Four, Specified Amount: it pays a fixed amount you specify in advance.

How to choose? For a client whose goal is accumulation, the biggest fear is a disability that stops income and breaks the savings plan; option three, Maximum Benefit, best protects the original plan. For a protection-first client who only needs the policy to stay in force, option one is enough. The more it waives, the more the rider costs; the next slide shows how much.

This illustration is a 40-year-old woman, $500,000, $7,827 a year for ten years, with WOP on option three, Maximum Benefit.

Cost of Other Benefits

The Cost of Other Benefits column: $724 a year in years 1 to 10; in years 11 to 20, with no more premium, still $724 a year; then in year 21, age 60, it goes to zero. The rider ends at 60, and so does its charge.

One thing to watch: this client funds for only ten years and pays no premium from year 11, yet the WOP charge keeps coming out of the cash value until 59. A rider charge follows the rider's coverage period, not the premium period. When you design the illustration, go over with the client what the rider covers in those years and whether it's worth the cost; exactly what is waived or paid on disability is whatever the rider's wording says.

EnhancersThe Enhancer Riders

AV Enhancement → Flexible Accumulated Value Enhancement → Enhancer / Plus / MaxAV Enhancement → Flexible Accumulated Value Enhancement → Enhancer / Plus / Max

计划书软件 Riders 页面下方的 AV Enhancement:Accumulated Value Enhancement (Interest Bonus) 不勾,Flexible Accumulated Value Enhancement 勾选,Type 下拉可选 Enhancer、Enhancer Plus、Enhancer Max,From-Through 为 1-M / AV Enhancement on the illustration software Riders screen: Accumulated Value Enhancement (Interest Bonus) unticked, Flexible Accumulated Value Enhancement ticked, with the Type drop-down offering Enhancer, Enhancer Plus or Enhancer Max, from-through 1-M

The fifth rider, the Enhancer series. In AV Enhancement at the bottom of the Riders screen there are two choices, one or the other. The first is Accumulated Value Enhancement, the free Interest Bonus. The second is Flexible Accumulated Value Enhancement; tick it and the Type offers three tiers: Enhancer, Enhancer Plus and Enhancer Max.

All three do the same thing: multiply the year's index credit by a percentage and add it on, while raising the ceiling on that bonus. They differ in how much they add and what they charge. The base Enhancer is free; Plus and Max carry a charge, a percentage of the cash value, which is the item we care about today: a rider charge.

On LLD the Enhancer series is available below $1M of face, a design specific to the PFA channel. From-Through "1-M" means the tier applies from year one to maturity.

The three tiers in one table, read from the cost side.

Enhancer: no charge, a 15% interest bonus, capped at 0.85%. A 1% credit becomes 1.15%; the 11% cap becomes 11.85%. Enhancer Plus: 1% a year, a 45% bonus capped at 2.5%; 1% becomes 1.45% and the cap 13.5%. Enhancer Max: the charge steps down in three bands, 3% a year in years 1 to 19, 2% in years 20 to 29, 1% from year 30; the bonus also has three bands: 95% up to 6% in years 2 to 20, making the cap 17%; 70% up to 4.25% in years 21 to 30; 45% up to 2.5% from year 31.

From the cost side, the single most important sentence: the charge is fixed; the bonus is not. The charge comes out whatever the index does; the bonus multiplies that year's credit, so a 0% year earns no bonus. And the bonus rates and caps are current values the carrier can lower to the guaranteed level. Max's 3% is earned back many times in good years and is a pure outflow in a zero year.

Compliance

Don't say "a guaranteed extra 15% interest" or "up to a 17% return." Say: "There's a bonus that multiplies the interest credited that year; in a zero year the bonus is zero and the charge still comes out."

Back-test, not guaranteed · today's parameters on historical S&P price returns (no dividends) · Plus and Max shown before the rider charge in up years

This is a back-test. First, what it is: today's product parameters applied to the S&P 500's actual moves in each year from 2005 to 2024, to see what each option would have credited. It isn't the history of any real policy, and it says nothing certain about the future.

Start with the five highlighted years: 2008, 2011, 2015, 2018 and 2022, when the S&P fell or went nowhere; in 2008 it lost 38.49%. In those years the Interest Bonus column still credited 0.25% or 0.50%, Enhancer credited zero, and Plus and Max show −1% and −3%. Why negative with an Enhancer? Because a zero credit means a zero bonus, while the rider charge still comes out. That's the point we made earlier: a zero year isn't free.

Now the up years. In 2013 the S&P rose 29.6%, and every IUL column hit its ceiling: 11.85% for Enhancer, 13.5% for Plus, 17% for Max. That's the IUL trade: the index side never goes negative in a down year, and you don't get all of a strong year either.

Read the bottom three rows carefully. Over 20 years the geometric average is 8.22% for the S&P and 7.91% for Enhancer. Plus and Max show 8.80% and 10.56%, but those figures leave out the rider charge in up years; take it out, using the cumulative values on the next slide, and the 20-year figures are about 7.99% and 8.07%. The volatility row is clear enough: 17% for the S&P, between 5% and 9% for the IUL columns, a much smoother ride.

One more look at this table from today's angle, cost: in the zero years Plus and Max show −1% and −3%, which is what a rider charge looks like on the cash value. In each of the five down or flat years, Max takes 3% out of the account. The up years earn it back many times over, but a client choosing Max must know that the 3% really comes out in the bad years.

Compliance

This is a back-test, not a guarantee and not a rate of return. Don't clip a figure like 10.56% and send it to a client; if you use it, say "before charges" and "today's parameters applied backwards" in the same breath. Caps and bonus rates may be lowered in future.

Back-test, not guaranteed · today's parameters applied to history, not a policy that existed then

The last slide showed each year's crediting; this one accumulates it. Put $100,000 in at 2004 and roll each column forward to 2024. The IUL columns are net of the rider charges, so Plus and Max here are after their fees.

Start with 2008. The S&P drops from $121,160 to $74,525, losing almost 40% in a year. The IUL columns barely move: Enhancer stays at $120,406, and Max slips from $120,377 to $116,765 because of its 3% charge. By 2011 the S&P is only just back above $100,000, while the IUL columns sit between $146,000 and $151,000. This is the easiest part of the IUL story to tell: in the crash years the index side doesn't fall with the market.

Then read 2024 honestly. After twenty years the S&P is at $485,291, 8.22% a year; the best IUL column, Max, is at $471,946, about 8.07%; Enhancer $457,987; the Interest Bonus $441,487. Over these twenty years, the S&P ends above every IUL column; what the IUL buys is a far smoother path. That trade is what to explain to a client, not "it beats the S&P."

Two caveats must go with it. First, the IUL columns deduct only the rider charges, not the cost of insurance or policy expenses, so a real policy's cash value would be lower, especially in the early years. Second, the S&P column is price return, with no dividends and no fund fees. Neither side is a real account; both are there to explain the mechanics.

Presenter note

The S&P column has been recalculated from the previous slide's annual returns: the original sheet broke at 2007 and 2010, which understated every later year and showed $467,718 for 2024. At the previous slide's 8.22% twenty-year average it comes to $485,291.

2160$2,030$2,495$105,407
2665$2,556$3,141$132,902

Year 16: $82,388 × 3% ≈ $2,471; the ledger shows $2,474, the gap is monthly deduction

Finally, what Enhancer Max actually deducts in an illustration. This one was issued at 40, $500,000, with Enhancer Max, and no premium from year 15.

The value at the end of year 15 is $82,388. Year 16's Enhancer charge? $82,388 × 3% ≈ $2,471; the ledger shows $2,474, $3 more, again because the charge is taken monthly on that month's value, and the value rises through the year. It's the same reason as with the accumulated value charge earlier.

Now year 20: the charge drops from $2,775 to $1,929 because the rate falls from 3% to 2% from year 20. In year 21 the bonus drops from $3,196 to $2,495 because the bonus rate falls from 95% to 70%. The two changes are a year apart, matching the parameter table's two sets of years: charge in years 1 to 19, bonus in years 2 to 20.

Note this ledger is illustrated at 6.5%, so every year's bonus exceeds the charge. Real years include zeros; in those years the bonus is zero and the two-thousand-plus charge still comes out. Make this completely clear to the client before choosing Max.

The sixth rider, the Combo MultiChoice Rider, CMC. It adds term coverage, insurance for a set period with no cash value and a low premium, for another person, or extra for the insured, on the same IUL policy.

Find Combo MultiChoice Rider in the middle of the Riders screen and click Add Insured, or Select Contact to pick from the client's records. Note the line of text: each rider insured is limited to one CMC per policy.

Amount and term: 20- or 30-year level term

Clicking Add Insured opens this window. First choose the insured type: self, spouse, child, parent, grandparent, grandchild, business partner, extended family or other, a wide range. Then enter the person's name, date of birth and sex.

In the middle is risk information: the assumed rate class and any table rating or flat extra. Below that, the coverage: the amount and whether the term is 20 or 30 years. This example adds $100,000 for 30 years on a spouse.

Why add it to the IUL rather than buy a separate term policy? One, convenience: one policy, one payment, one statement. Two, cost, which the next slide compares with a case. But be clear that each CMC insured is underwritten separately; the class you enter is an estimate, and the final class is whatever underwriting decides.

$50 万 20 年定期:CMC 约 $38 /月,单独买约 $41 /月$500K of 20-year term: about $38 a month as CMC, about $41 bought separately

A 35-year-old woman, standard class, illustrated at 6.5%, a 20-year premium plan, wanting $1M of total coverage. Three ways to do it.

Option one: the full $1M as IUL, $555 a month. Option two: a $500,000 IUL plus $500,000 of 20-year term through CMC, $309 a month. Option three: a $500,000 IUL plus a separate $500,000 20-year term policy, $312 a month for the two. The last row is the reference: the $500,000 IUL alone is $271 a month.

Subtract $271 from options two and three and you see what the $500,000 of term costs in each: about $38 a month as CMC, about $41 bought separately. CMC is slightly cheaper, and there's one less policy to manage. Option one costs $246 a month more than option two; that extra buys permanent coverage and more cash value accumulation.

So this slide isn't saying one option is best. It tells the client: when the budget is limited and the protection gap is especially large for a period (a mortgage, young children), combine some permanent with some term, and CMC lets you do that within one policy.

1. "There Are Charges, So It's Not Worth It?"

Yes, insurance has charges, just as a car needs fuel and a house has property tax. Every financial product has costs; they just take different forms."
Insurance is similar: the charges keep the protection and the cash value running over the long term. And if something happens, the claim can be tens or hundreds of times what you paid in charges."

The last part: the seven questions clients ask most. For each, first a line you can say as it stands, then the reasoning behind it.

The first: "Life insurance has charges, so it isn't worth it." Step one of the answer is to agree, not defend: "Yes, insurance does have charges." Then bring back the two slides from the start of today: a car needs fuel, a house has property tax; every financial product has costs, just in different forms.

Step two is what the charges buy: they're the cost of keeping the protection and the cash value running over the long term. The last line carries the most weight: if something happens, the claim can be tens or hundreds of times what you paid in charges. The baby boy earlier paid under $2,000 in charges in year one for $1M of coverage.

2. "In a 0% Year, Don't the Charges Eat It?"

Yes. If the market is flat, the charges still come out and the cash value can go down. But when the market falls, the index side credits 0% at worst and isn't marked down with it, so the charges wear it down slowly rather than it crashing the way stocks can. Designed properly, it still has room to grow over the long run."
Owning an IUL is like owning a house. Some years the price doesn't move (a 0% market), but you still pay property tax, utilities and HOA. The house is still there, and over the long run prices have mostly gone up."

Question two: "In a 0% year, don't the charges eat the policy?" It's a sharp question; it means the client is really thinking.

Agree first again: "Yes, in a flat market the charges still come out and the cash value can go down that year." Don't dodge it; we saw it in the Enhancer back-test. Then the good side: when the market falls, the index side credits 0% at worst and isn't marked down with it, so the charges wear it down slowly rather than it losing 30 or 40 percent in a year the way stocks can. In 2008 the S&P fell 38%; an IUL credited zero that year.

Then the house analogy: some years the price doesn't rise, but property tax, utilities and HOA still have to be paid; the house is still there; and over the long run, prices have mostly gone up. End on design: a properly designed, properly funded policy can ride out a few zero years.

The Canva original says "an IUL never loses principal." The web version uses the accurate wording: the index side credits 0% at worst, but policy charges still come out, so the cash value can fall, and in the early years it's below the premiums paid. Don't say "it beats the market long term" either; say "it still has room to grow over the long run."

3. "Will the Charges Go Up Later?"

Policy charges come in two kinds:
Fixed charges (the monthly fee, the administrative charges) don't rise; they're spelled out in the contract.
The cost of insurance does rise with age, as on any policy. But as your money and interest build up, what the insurer would actually pay keeps shrinking, so the cost doesn't necessarily grow.
So the real charges won't necessarily go up; designed well, they can stay fairly steady."

Question three: "Will the charges go up later?" This one uses everything we covered today. Answer in two parts.

The first kind, fixed charges: the $6 monthly policy fee, the premium load percentage, the expense charge and the accumulated value charge all have rates written into the contract; they don't rise because you get older. And the expense charge ends after ten years, the accumulated value charge after 25.

The second kind, the cost of insurance: it rises naturally with age, as on every life policy; say so honestly. But it's charged on the net amount at risk, and as your money and interest grow, the part the insurer would actually pay keeps shrinking, so the cost of insurance doesn't necessarily grow. In the baby boy's case, it was $615 a year at 24 and only $405 at 30.

The conclusion: "The real charges won't necessarily go up; designed well, they can stay fairly steady." Note "designed well": it assumes adequate funding and the right death benefit option.

Compliance

"Fixed charges don't rise" refers to current rates; the contract also states guaranteed maximum rates, and the insurer may adjust within them. If the client presses, say so plainly. The original's "it will stay very steady" goes too far; the web version says "designed well, it can stay fairly steady."

4. "IUL Is Expensive"

I know a lot of people say that. They just haven't sat down to look into it the way you're doing now."
The charges on an IUL aren't actually high. It just itemizes every one so transparently that it gives the impression of being many, and expensive."
Look at it another way: with many financial products, like funds, brokerage accounts and whole life, the costs are built into the product rather than listed for you line by line. An IUL lays out every cost, priced like a restaurant menu."
Transparent doesn't mean expensive; if anything, it shows it's well regulated."
Costs you can see aren't necessarily high ones."

Four: "IUL is expensive." Clients usually heard this from someone else.

Open by affirming the client: "I know a lot of people say that; they just haven't sat down to look into it the way you're doing now." It's not a dig at anyone; it credits the client in front of you for taking the time.

Then the core: an IUL's charges aren't especially high; it just itemizes every one. The charges page we saw today has seven columns and a row per year, showing where every cent goes. With many financial products, like funds, brokerage accounts and whole life, the costs are built into the product rather than listed line by line. An IUL prices everything like a restaurant menu. Transparent isn't the same as expensive; costs you can see aren't necessarily high.

Best of all, after these lines, open the charges page of their own illustration right there and point out the six charges. The slide where we reconciled the statement to the cent is for exactly this moment.

Compliance

The Canva original names a specific company after "whole life" and says its costs are "hidden" and that "the ones you can't see are the scary ones." The web version names no one and says the costs are "built into the product rather than itemized." It's about how costs are disclosed, not a judgment on any other company or product.

"Is It More Expensive Through PFA?"

I understand the concern. PFA is National Life's largest agency, and National Life designed an IUL specifically for PFA: Living Life Defender. Same insurer, same underwriting, and every premium and charge is in the illustration for you to check line by line."
Several of its riders carry no extra charge, such as the 10-year guarantee rider and the base Enhancer."
It's like buying the same brand of formula at a warehouse store: the same product in a bigger pack, with a bottle and pacifiers thrown in."

Five: "Is it more expensive through PFA?" Clients sometimes worry that buying through a large agency adds a layer of cost.

Acknowledge the concern, then the facts: PFA is National Life's largest agency, so National Life designed an IUL specifically for PFA, the Living Life Defender we've been looking at all day. National Life still issues it, the underwriting is the same, and the premium and every charge are in the illustration to check line by line.

Then the examples from today: the 10-year GFR is free, the base Enhancer is free, and Enhancers are available below $1M of face. As an analogy: it's like buying the same brand of formula at a warehouse store, the same product in a bigger pack, with a bottle and pacifiers thrown in.

Compliance

The Canva original says "not more expensive, actually cheaper," compares smaller agencies to a convenience store ("pricier, smaller, no extras"), and ends with "we've really replaced a lot of New York Life and other agents' policies." The web version uses none of these: "cheaper" has no verifiable comparison behind it; disparaging competitors is expressly prohibited in California under §790.03; and using replaced policies as a selling point crosses the replacement red line. Talk only about our own product and riders, in facts the illustration can confirm.

"Will I Have to Put More In Later?"

Some say an IUL needs topping up. It depends:
If the policy is designed properly from the start, funded enough, and grows steadily, it generally doesn't need more money.
Only in the extreme case, underfunded early, many years of no growth, and too much cash value taken out, might it need topping up. So it comes from poor design or misuse.
Like a tree:
Water and feed it well at the start, and it grows and fruits on its own, needing little watering later.
Underwater it, then keep picking fruit without feeding it, and it may stop growing and need more water and fertiliser.

Six: "I hear an IUL needs more money put in later?" This is the most widely circulated claim online; we need to be clear about when it's true.

It depends. A policy designed properly from the start, funded enough and growing steadily generally doesn't need more. Only when several things pile up, underfunding early, many years with no growth, and too much cash value withdrawn, might the account fail to hold up and need topping up. So it's a problem of poor design or misuse, not something the product is destined for.

The tree analogy works well: water and feed it properly at the start and it grows and fruits on its own; underwater it and keep picking fruit without feeding it, and it stalls. Everything from today, funding fully and early, choosing the right death benefit option, switching to level before income, choosing riders by need, is watering and feeding.

Presenter note

Be honest too: even a well-designed policy can face markets and rates that differ from the illustration, which is why we review the policy with the client every year and adjust when needed. That itself is a strong service promise.

7. "Buying at 35 vs 55: Does the Cost Differ Much?"

A big difference. At 30 or 40 the risk is lower, the cost of insurance cheaper, and cash value builds faster. At 50 or 60 the risk is higher, insurance costs more, and it takes a big bite out of the account's room to grow. So the younger you buy, the lower the cost.
Like buying a home:
Buying at 30 or 40 is like buying while prices are still low: you get in cheaper, with more runway ahead.
Buying at 50 or 60 is like waiting until prices have risen: it costs more, and you've missed years of growth.

The last one: "If I buy at 35 versus 55, is the cost really that different?"

The answer is yes, a big difference, and today gave us the evidence. Flip back to the expense charge slide: same woman, $500,000, best class, $135.40 a month at 40 and $278.75 at 53. Thirteen years later, that charge doubles. The cost of insurance works the same way: the older you are, the higher the rate per thousand, and the early years, when cash value is still small and the amount at risk largest, coincide with the highest rates, taking a big bite out of the account's room to grow.

Add time: starting at 35 leaves two or three decades for the account to grow; starting at 55 leaves a decade or so before the money is needed. In the home-buying analogy: buying early is like buying while prices are low, with more runway; waiting until prices rise costs more and misses years of growth.

Compliance

Make "earlier is cheaper" with the contract's rates and the illustration's numbers; don't press with "it'll be too late." The original says "waiting until prices have doubled"; the web version says "until prices have risen," implying no particular increase. The Canva original also numbers this "6.", repeating the previous slide; the web version makes it 7.

First, about the numbers

Every percentage and dollar figure here reflects National Life's Living Life Defender (LLD) schedule and illustrations at the time of writing. Rates get revised, so always quote from the current illustration and product guide. Each example states its own assumptions (age, sex, face amount, underwriting class, illustrated rate); change one and the conclusion changes. National Life's other IULs are structured differently; SummitLife, for instance, has a 6% premium load, a 15-year expense charge, and a 0.05% monthly accumulated value charge for 10 years. Always work from the illustration for the product you're quoting.

1. Why there are charges at all

When a client says the charges make it a bad deal, don't defend. Agree first, then lay out the facts: anything that runs, costs something to run.

In everyday life

  • A car: fuel or charging, insurance, servicing, annual registration
  • A home: utilities, rent or mortgage, property tax, upkeep, homeowner's insurance
  • A business: payroll, inventory, bills, liability cover, rent or loan, everything else

In financial products

  • Rental property: management, agent commission, property tax, HOA, insurance
  • Funds and equities: management fees, trading costs, and the emotional cost
  • A CD: opportunity cost in a low rate, plus the early-withdrawal penalty
  • A credit card: annual fee, interest, transaction charges

The difference isn't whether there are charges. It's whether you can see them. Many financial products build their costs into the product rather than itemizing them; an IUL prints every line on the illustration. Costs you can see aren't necessarily high ones.

2. One equation, memorize it

Premium − charges + interest = cash value

This page is about the middle term. Six components make up the charges. The first four (premium load, expense charge, policy fee, accumulated value charge) have rates written into the contract and follow fixed rules; the fifth, the cost of insurance, is the real weight and the only one that moves with age and the amount at risk; the sixth depends on which riders you turned on.

Where to see them: in National Life's illustration software, once the case is set up, click Reports on the left, tick Policy Charges and Expenses, and run the reports. The illustration then includes year-by-year charges: seven columns (the six charges, with the Enhancer charge in its own column), one row per year, and a total on the right. It isn't printed by default, so many people have never seen it.

3. The six charges

Most examples below come from one LLD illustration: a baby boy, standard non-tobacco, $1M face, level death benefit, $500 a month ($6,000 a year), California. Total charges are $1,978 in year 1 and $2,049 in year 10, then drop to $746 in year 11; the first two charges explain why.

Premium Expense Charge / Premium LoadOne · premium load

Taken off each premium as it comes in. It covers state guaranty assessments, first-year commission, and the cost of putting the policy on the books. On LLD it's 8% in years 1–10 and 5% from year 11: on $6,000 a year, $480 a year for ten years, then $300. In a year with no premium it's zero.

Expense Charge / Per Unit ChargeTwo · per-unit expense charge

Charged per thousand of face, at a rate set by age, sex, face amount, and underwriting class, and on LLD only for 10 years; from year 11 it's zero. It covers underwriting, the medical exam, renewal commission, marketing, contracting, and compliance. For the baby boy at $1M, standard class: $1,163 a year ($96.92 a month), $11,630 over ten years, and never again. It's the main reason costs are high for ten years and then fall off a cliff.

Age matters a great deal: for the same woman with $500k of face in the best class, it's $135.40 a month ($1,624.80 a year) at 40 and $278.75 a month ($3,345 a year) at 53. Thirteen years later, the charge roughly doubles.

Policy FeeThree · policy fee

The same on every policy: $6 a month, $72 a year, for the life of the contract. It covers administration and maintenance, and it's the simplest line to explain.

Accumulated Value ChargeFour · accumulated value charge

A percentage of the accumulated value: on LLD 0.04% a month (0.48% a year), for 25 years only, zero from year 26. It covers the carrier's investment and hedging cost: the money sits mainly in fixed-income assets such as corporate bonds and mortgage-backed securities, part of the yield buys options, the index credit follows a formula on the way up and is floored at 0 on the way down, and running all of that is what this charge pays for. Its dollar amount grows (from $11 in year 1 to $1,181 in year 25 for the baby boy), not because the rate changes but because the account does.

It's deducted monthly on that month's value, so a yearly estimate should use the average of the start and end: year 6 starts at $24,446 and ends at $30,419, an average of about $27,430 × 0.48% ≈ $132, matching the illustration; using the year-end $30,419 × 0.48% = $146 overstates it. The exact monthly figure can be checked on a statement: (last month's ending value $3,713.52 − this month's cost of insurance $20.67 − this month's other charges $162.30) × 0.04% = $1.41, matching the statement to the cent. Note that it's computed after the month's other charges come out.

Cost of Insurance(COI)Five · cost of insurance

Set by age, sex, face amount, and underwriting class, priced off the 2017 CSO mortality table. The Data Section prints the guaranteed maximum COI rates per thousand at risk per month, for example $0.216 at 53, $4.91 at 83 and $54.68 at 106; those are contractual ceilings, and current rates are what's actually charged. The 2017 table's death rates are below the 2001 table's at every age, because people live longer: US life expectancy at birth was 59.7 in 1930 and 78.8 in 2019 (CDC).

It's the heaviest of the six and the only one that genuinely moves over time. It gets its own section below, because it does not simply climb with age, which is the least intuitive and most useful idea on this page.

Cost of Other BenefitsSix · rider charges

Whatever riders are switched on; none, and it's zero. Section 6 lists the six common LLD riders and what each costs.

4. Net amount at risk: why COI need not keep rising

Face amount − cash value = net amount at risk

The carrier is only ever on the hook for the net amount at risk. The part of the face amount that is already your own money carries no risk for them. The cost of insurance is the amount at risk times the rate per thousand for that age, so:

Cash value up → net amount at risk down → cost of insurance down

Age pushes the cost up; growing cash value pushes it down. The two partly cancel.

You can see it in the illustration: for the baby boy, COI falls from $252 in year 1 to $69 in year 12 (infant mortality is higher than toddler mortality to begin with, and the amount at risk is shrinking); it's $615 a year at 24 and only $405 at 30. In the thirties the cash value gets large relative to the face, tax law requires the death benefit to rise with it, the amount at risk stops shrinking, and COI follows age upward again, which is also why the death benefit grows on its own late in an illustration.

6.5%Example: female age 0, $1M, illustrated at 6.5%

The same total premium ($27,000), changing only how fast it goes in:

$150/mo × 15 yrs
CV → NAR
$450/mo × 5 yrs
CV → NAR
1$500 → $999.5k$3,800 → $996.2k
20$25k → $975k$45k → $955k
50$150k → $850k$310k → $690k
现金值追平保额CV reaches face第 81 年year 81第 68 年year 68

Same money in, but the faster schedule drops the net amount at risk faster, and with it the cost of insurance. That's a second reason beyond "buying young is cheaper": besides the issue age, the speed the money goes in matters too. Faster funding still has to stay within the tax-law limits so the policy doesn't become a MEC.

Use the actual illustration output when you run a case.

5. Level vs increasing death benefit

Option A

Level

Level

The face amount is fixed. As cash value climbs, the net amount at risk falls all the way down, and the cost of insurance falls with it.

Example (female age 0, $450/mo for six years, 6.5%): $410k of cash value and $590k at risk in year 50; cash value reaches the $1M face in year 63.

Option B

Increasing

Increasing

Face amount = original face + cash value. So the net amount at risk stays at the original face and never falls, which keeps the cost of insurance permanently higher.

E.g. $1.2M = $1M + $200k of cash value, with $1M still at risk.

Same premium, different ending

The case: female 40, $1M, best class, 6.5%, $13,236 a year for ten years ($132,360). The level version is illustrated all the way to 120. The increasing version has $600k of cash value and a $1.6M death benefit at 87, then falls every year and lapses at age 97: $1M at risk at late-life rates costs more than the account earns, and eats it.

So why use increasing at all?

Because it opens up room to fund. Tax law limits how much a policy can hold: the cumulative cap is the greater of the Guideline Single Premium and the Guideline Level Premium times the number of years, and each year must also stay under the maximum non-MEC premium. The increasing option raises the Guideline Level Premium sharply. A comparison (female 40, $500k, best class, 6.5%):

Increasing
Guideline Level Premium (a year)$8,784$23,400
Guideline Single Premium$139,039$139,039
MEC)Max non-MEC premium (a year)$32,904$32,904
5 年存满 $139,039 之后After $139,039 in five years到第 16 年左右都没法再多存No more until about year 16第 6 年起又能继续存(第 6 年 $1,361,第 7–10 年每年 $23,400)Funding resumes in year 6 ($1,361, then $23,400 a year in years 7–10)

Over ten years the two illustrations take $139,039 and $234,000, and their illustrated rate columns differ (6.81% and 6.50%), so the later cash value gap mostly reflects the extra money; use this comparison only for whether more can go in.

Three rules
  2. Use increasing only when the client asks for it or you need to get more premium in quickly.
  4. Switch back to level before income starts, or the cost of insurance keeps grinding the account down.
  6. The switch is a manual action by the agent. It does not happen by itself. This is the one that matters most: forgetting it is exactly the lapse-at-97 case above.

6. Six riders and what they cost

Rider charges appear in the Cost of Other Benefits column (the Enhancer has its own column) and come out of cash value monthly, continuing after premiums stop. More riders isn't better; choose by what the client needs. The amounts below come from each case's illustration and vary by policy.

What it does, what it costs
40 岁、每年 $32,904 的案例,第 1 年退保现金值从 $19,943 变成 $29,241,现金值少 $187Waives the chosen share of the surrender charge; at 100%, surrender value equals accumulated value from year 1. Example: 100% at about $15.05 a month ($180.60 a year), charged only during the first ten years while there's a surrender charge. In a case funding $32,904 a year at 40, year-1 surrender value goes from $19,943 to $29,241, with $187 less accumulated value
PFA only. Pay the minimum guaranteed flex premium (MGP) and the policy stays in force through the period even if cash value falls short. 10 years is free; 20, 30 or 40 years is paid, e.g. 40 years at $12.50 a month ($150 a year). Never call it "guaranteed no-lapse"
PFA only, available below $1M of face. Adds a bonus to the year's credit: Enhancer is free (15%, up to 0.85%); Plus 1% a year (45%, up to 2.5%); Max 3% in years 1–19, 2% in 20–29, 1% from 30 (95% up to 6% in years 2–20). The charge is fixed, the bonus is not; it still comes out in a 0% year. Example: $82,388 × 3% ≈ $2,471, shown as $2,474 because it's taken monthly
Not currently available in CA or NY. Against the free chronic rider: a $3M cap (the free rider shares $1.5M across all living benefits), 2% or 4% of face a month undiscounted, no waiting period, issue ages 18–75. Example: $500k × 2% = $10k a month, × 4% = $20k (may be limited by the IRS per diem). For a 40-year-old woman at $500k, the charge is $306 in year 1 and $399 in year 14, still over $400 in her seventies, and down to double digits after 105 as the amount at risk shrinks
Four levels: monthly deductions (admin + COI), minimum premium, maximum benefit (guideline level premium), or a specified amount. Example: female 40, maximum benefit at $724 a year, charged to 59 even after premiums stop; the rider ends at 60 and so does the charge
Adds 20- or 30-year term on the same IUL for the insured, a spouse, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, a business partner, relatives or others; one per person per policy, underwritten separately. Example: female 35, $1M of total cover: $1M IUL $555 a month; $500k IUL + $500k 20-year CMC $309; $500k IUL + separate $500k 20-year term $312 ($500k IUL alone $271)

7. Seven common questions, seven answers

There are charges, so it's a bad deal"

"It does, the same way a car has fuel and a house has property tax. Every financial product has a cost; they just take different shapes. The charges are what keeps the protection and the cash value running. And if something happens, the claim can be tens or hundreds of times what you paid in charges."

In a 0% year, don't the charges eat it?"

"Yes. The charges still come out and the cash value can dip. But when the market falls, the index side credits 0% at worst and isn't marked down with it, so it grinds rather than crashes the way equities can. Designed properly, it still has room to grow over a long horizon."

"It's like owning a house. Some years the price doesn't move, but you still pay property tax, utilities, and HOA. The house is still there."

Don't say "an IUL never loses principal": the index side doesn't go negative, but policy charges still come out, and early cash value is below the premiums paid.

Will the charges go up?"

Split it in two. The fixed charges (the monthly fee, the administrative charges) follow the contract's rates, and the expense charge ends after ten years, the accumulated value charge after 25. The cost of insurance does rise with age, as it does on any policy, but the money and interest building up mean the carrier's net amount at risk keeps shrinking, so the actual charge need not go up; designed well, it can stay fairly steady. The contract also states guaranteed maximum rates within which the insurer may adjust; if the client presses, say so.

IUL is expensive"

"A lot of people say that. They haven't sat down and looked the way you're doing now. The charges aren't high. They're itemized, which makes them look numerous. With funds, brokerage accounts, whole life, the costs are built into the product rather than listed line by line. An IUL prints the menu with prices. Transparent is not the same as expensive." Then open the charges page of their own illustration and point out the six lines.

"通过 PFA 买,会不会更贵?""Is it more expensive through PFA?"

"I understand the concern. PFA is National Life's largest agency, and National Life designed an IUL specifically for PFA, Living Life Defender. Same insurer, same underwriting, and the premium and every charge are in the illustration to check line by line. Several riders carry no extra charge, such as the 10-year guarantee rider and the base Enhancer." An analogy that works: it's like buying the same brand of formula at a warehouse store, the same product in a bigger pack, with a bottle and pacifiers thrown in.

Don't say "cheaper" (there's no verifiable comparison), don't disparage other agencies or carriers (prohibited in California under §790.03), and never use replaced policies as a selling point.

I hear you have to put more money in later"

It depends. Funded properly, with steady growth, generally no. It happens in the extreme case: underfunded early, several flat years, and too much taken out. That's a design or usage problem, not a product problem. Even a well-designed policy can meet markets and rates unlike the illustration, which is why we review it together every year.

"Like a tree. Water and feed it early and it grows and fruits on its own. Underwater it, then keep picking fruit without feeding it, and it stalls."

Does buying at 35 versus 55 really matter?"

A lot. At 35 the mortality charge is low and cash value builds faster. At 55 the charge is high and takes a real bite out of the account's room to grow. The contract's numbers prove it: for the same woman at $500k in the best class, the expense charge is $135.40 a month at 40 and $278.75 at 53.

"Like buying property. Buy earlier and you're in at a lower price with more runway. Wait and you pay more and miss the growth." Don't push with "it'll be too late."

8. Finding the six charges on your own statement

This section is for checking it yourself: open the statement for your own policy and find each of the six charges on it. Do it once and you stop reciting the cost conversation and start knowing it.

Where to look

National Life Group 的手机 App,或者 Agent Portal 里的 年度对账单(Annual Statement)。

The National Life Group app, or the annual statement in the agent portal. Look for the Policy Transactions Summary by Policy Month. The charges are itemised there month by month, one column each, not rolled into a single figure.

Start with three

The three that reconcile cleanly: the policy fee ($6 flat each month), the premium load (a fixed percentage, appearing the moment a premium lands; $40 on a $500 premium), and the accumulated value charge ((last month's ending value − this month's COI − this month's other charges) × 0.04%). Your arithmetic on these will match the statement to the cent.

Then work out one ratio: total charges in the period ÷ premium in the period. Here it is at two different funding levels on the same policy:

Ratio
$444.88$2,737.7416.2%
$178.07$1,095.7916.25%

The two come out nearly identical, and that is the whole point: the charges are computed from rules and scale with the policy; the carrier isn't deciding what to take. When a client asks what they're actually being charged, open their statement, point at the six lines, and work the ratio in front of them. Nothing you could say does as much.

The ratio is not a selling point

Three things. First, it is this policy in this period. Change the year, the age, the product or the funding pattern and it moves, so it can never be stated as "our fee is 16%". Second, it is not a fund expense ratio and doesn't line up against one: the largest component here is the cost of insurance, which is buying a death benefit, and a fund has no such line. Third, don't screenshot a statement, yours or a client's. It carries a policy number, a name and balances: that is a client's non-public personal information.

9. One-page summary

  2. Premium − charges + interest = cash value. Everything is about the middle term.
  4. Six of them: premium load, per-unit expense, policy fee, accumulated value charge, cost of insurance, rider charges. The expense charge runs 10 years, the accumulated value charge 25.
  6. Face − cash value = net amount at risk. More cash value, less at risk, lower cost of insurance.
  8. Faster funding drops the risk faster, even at the same total premium.
  10. Increasing opens funding room but never lowers the risk; switch back to level manually before income starts.
  12. Choose riders by need; rider charges continue after premiums stop.
  14. On "it's expensive": concede the charges, then talk about visibility. Visible isn't the same as costly.
