Life insurance and tax is a subject of its own and is left aside here, for a reason: covering it carelessly is worse than not covering it. The allocation comes first and the policy second; doing it the other way round is the most common and most expensive mistake there is.
Why enforcement follows the money
The chain has four links, and none of them requires a political position:
Land-sale revenue shrinks and local income falls |
Spending is rigid, so a gap opens |
With no new tax base, attention turns to the existing stock: wealth that exists but isn't declared |
Offshore assets come first, because three things are true at once: the money is there, the state wants to see it, and the state needs it |
When those three hold simultaneously, what comes next is fairly predictable. CRS 2.0 and China's offshore trust rules are that chain arriving.
How the offshore structure worked, and why it stopped
Residence versus source
Only income arising inside the jurisdiction |
Wherever you earned it, you owe tax on it" | 「只有在我这块地上赚的钱才要缴」"Only what you earned on my ground" |
Hong Kong, Singapore, the traditional offshore jurisdictions |
The status follows the person | 把利润「留在境外」即可不被课税Leave the profit outside and it isn't taxed |
Singapore and others have amended their treatment of remitted foreign income, so "purely source-based" is no longer precise.
Manufactured in Shenzhen at a cost of $2; sold first to a related Hong Kong company at $16, leaving $14 of profit in Hong Kong; then exported to the US at $20, so only $4 of profit is visible to the US.
The point: Hong Kong is source-based, so the $14 of foreign-source profit isn't taxed there, and China and the US each only see their own segment.
One pillar fell, and the building came down
The structure stood on two pillars: information asymmetry and tax-law asymmetry.
Pillar one: gone
FATCA has foreign institutions reporting directly to the US, and CRS has participating jurisdictions exchanging automatically. The authorities now have your account data before you hand it over.
Pillar two: standing, but useless
Hong Kong and Singapore are still source-based; that hasn't changed. But once your country of residence knows what you hold there, the source rule stops mattering, because the country taxing you is the one you live in.
The conclusion of this section is the opening line again: anything that only works because the other side doesn't know isn't planning, it's a window, and windows close.
And a related judgement: the offshore structure has changed function, from a tax-saving tool to an asset-protection and segregation tool.
FATCA: moving the obligation onto the banks
In plain words: the US told the world's financial institutions to report what its people hold with them. The design that matters is shifting the obligation from the taxpayer to the institution, which makes every bank an outpost of the US tax system.
What made it enforceable? The dollar. It is about 57% of global reserves (IMF COFER, 2026 Q1; the euro at 20.03%, the yen 5.44%, the renminbi 1.99%), no institution can operate without dollar clearing, and non-compliant institutions face 30% withholding on US-source income. Refusing means giving up dollar business.
Who's covered: a green card is US status
Citizens
Including anyone born in the US. The status follows the person anywhere.
Green card holders
For income tax purposes a green card holder is a US resident, taxed on worldwide income.
Tax residents
No US status, but meeting the substantial presence test. Below.
Two things to be clear about: FATCA only reaches US persons' accounts held outside the US, and the US has no exchange controls: a foreign account is perfectly allowed; it just has to be reported.
The substantial presence test
Both conditions must hold: at least 31 days in the current year, and current-year days plus a third of last year plus a sixth of the year before, totalling 183 or more.
120 days a year for three years
120 + 40 + 20 = 180, under 183 → not a resident
130 days a year for three years
130 + 43.3 + 21.7 = 195, at or above 183 →
resident
Ten extra days a year, an entirely different outcome.
Tell clients not to estimate this as "about half a year"; the weighting makes the intuition badly wrong.
FBAR and Form 8938: two filings, not one
| FBAR(FinCEN 114) | Form 8938 | |
|---|---|---|
| 触发门槛Threshold | 海外金融账户合计,任一时点 > $10,000All foreign financial accounts combined, at any point, over $10,000 | 依居住地与申报身份分四档 ↓Four tiers by residence and filing status ↓ |
| 境内 · 单身In the US, single | — | 年末 $50,000 或年内最高 $75,000$50,000 at year end or $75,000 at any time |
In the US, joint | — | $100,000 / $150,000 |
Abroad, single | — | $200,000 / $300,000 |
Abroad, joint | — | $400,000 / $600,000 |
Attached to the income tax return |
Civil penalties scaled to wilfulness, and criminal exposure | 未申报最高 $10,000;收到通知后每 30 天再加 $10,000Up to $10,000, plus $10,000 per 30 days after notice |
Filing an FBAR does not satisfy Form 8938. Different thresholds, different agencies, different penalties, and plenty of people owe both. It's the single most commonly mis-stated point in this section.
Before you immigrate: six US indicia
Six signals that get a foreign bank to flag an account as US-connected: a US birthplace, a US address, a US phone number, a US mailing or c/o address, a US authorised signatory including a power of attorney, and regular transfers to the US.
The key point: anything at all connected to the US (an address, a contact method, an authorised person) is inside the net.
The dilemma: admit or deny. One example is a large HSBC Hong
Kong review letter campaign, aimed at accounts carrying US contact details and asking for
evidence of no US connection.
Admit US status and the bank may simply close the account.
Deny it and, if US status later surfaces, it's no longer just a failure to report but
a false statement, which is a different order of liability.
→ The real answer is the third path: report, fully, and on time.
CRS: riding on FATCA's rails
Tax authorities agreeing to report to one another. The reason it spread so fast is practical: FATCA had already forced every bank to build the machinery for identifying tax status and reporting it, and CRS simply used it.
| FATCA | CRS | |
|---|---|---|
| 主导方Driven by | 美国(单一国家立法)The US, by domestic statute | OECD(多边协议)The OECD, multilaterally |
One way: everyone → the US | 多边互相交换Mutual, between participants |
Whether you are a US person | 你是哪里的税务居民Where you are tax resident |
The multilateral agreement plus domestic law |
| 美国是否参与Does the US participate? | 发起者It created it | 未加入It did not join |
How to read it: FATCA asks whether you're a US person, CRS asks where you're tax resident. Both answers can be yes at once: a Chinese citizen with a green card is one such case, and it's extremely common among our clients.
The traditional havens are all in: BVI, Cayman, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, and the UAE (from January 1, 2017). China signed the MCAA in December 2015, began due diligence July 1, 2017, and first exchanged in September 2018; by April 2025 it had 123 exchange partners.
CRS 2.0 and China's offshore trust rules
First, the name: "CRS 2.0" is two things
CARF
CARF
The Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, from the OECD. It applies to crypto-asset service providers (exchanges and brokers), requiring due diligence and reporting.
修订版 CRS
The amended CRS
Widening the original CRS with three additions: e-money products, central bank digital currencies, and indirectly held crypto exposure through derivatives and funds.
The timetable has two stages, and this is the part that matters:
collection starts January 1, 2026, and the first exchange is in 2027, due by
June 30.
Transactions happening right now are already in the
record. What has already happened can't be changed; what can be managed is what happens from
here.
Four things, four different positions
The part this round genuinely adds |
Already covered by the original CRS, under the passive NFE look-through rules, which require identifying and reporting controlling persons and ultimate beneficiaries. Not new this round |
Outside CRS, since property isn't a financial account. But the source of funds is examined under anti-money-laundering and account-opening due diligence, which is a separate mechanism entirely |
Chinese domestic tax law, and a different system from the OECD's CRS: different legal basis, different enforcer, different subject. These two get conflated more than anything else here |
China's rules: remember the document number, not the date
MOF / STA Announcement 2026 No. 21 |
Issued July 24, 2026, effective on issue |
STA Announcement 2026 No. 15 |
Offshore trusts settled, held, or benefited from by Chinese resident individuals |
A habit worth adopting: give the client the document number, not the date. The number retrieves the original text on the ministry's own site. If they can verify it themselves, what you said holds up.
Four taxing points
Treated as a disposal
Settling assets is taxed as a property transfer: market value less original cost less reasonable expenses, at a flat 20%.
Taxed whether or not it distributes
Regardless of any actual distribution, the resident individual is the taxpayer and files annually, under either the property-transfer or the interest-dividend category.
No double tax
Trust income already reported and taxed is not taxed again when actually distributed.
Within 15 days
On termination, file by the 15th of the month following completion. (Settlement is reported March 1 to June 30 of the following year; ongoing years in the same window.)
① Regardless of distribution. The money can still be inside the
trust with nothing received, and it's still reported and taxed annually.
② The two income categories cannot offset each other. Property-transfer income
and interest-dividend income are computed separately and
cannot be netted, which raises the effective burden substantially.
③ What's been taxed isn't taxed again.
What the rule actually removes: one of the classic reasons for an irrevocable trust was that the income belonged to the trust rather than to you. Look-through taxation deletes that.
It reaches back to January 1, 2023. Tax owed and unpaid for January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025 must be settled within 90 days of the announcement taking effect. Late payment falls under the Tax Collection and Administration Law with late-payment interest; where evasion is involved, tax, interest, and penalties all follow.
The Chinese penalty range: the flat 20% rate on the relevant income categories; a penalty of 50% to 500% of the tax under Article 63 of the Tax Collection and Administration Law; and late-payment interest of 0.05% per day, roughly 18% annualised.
Nominee holding changes the name, not the beneficiary
One practice needs a specific warning: a US person putting a structure in a mainland relative's name. The question to ask: who is exposed when something goes wrong?
The announcement taxes the resident individual, so it reaches Chinese tax residents; nominee arrangements then also engage beneficial-ownership determinations and anti-avoidance provisions, decided case by case. Borrowing a name doesn't solve the problem and adds a layer of legal risk: the nominee may genuinely become the legal owner.
Where the US sits: the core diagram
Why hasn't the US joined CRS? The answer is two questions: does it need to? No, it has FATCA. And would joining help it? Joining would mean handing over data on US-held accounts, and the US is currently a net recipient of global capital. Handing it over would weaken exactly that.
| 受 CRS 交换Exchanged under CRS | 不受 CRS 交换Not exchanged | |
|---|---|---|
Both A Chinese citizen with a green card, holding accounts abroad |
FATCA only A US person's accounts abroad |
CRS only A participant's resident holding accounts in another participant |
Money held inside the US ★ whoever holds it |
That bottom-right cell is a difference in where the account sits, not in the obligation: money held in the US isn't automatically exchanged under CRS, but a Chinese tax resident's income from a US account still has to be reported under Chinese law.
The accurate formulation: not being automatically exchanged is not the same as not having to report; the flow of information is not the obligation to file. Coaching a client around another country's filing obligation isn't our business, and shouldn't be our language.
The thesis worth presenting is this: going forward, choose one tax residence (workable law, stable institutions, a deep toolbox) instead of a little bit everywhere, pay what's owed there properly, and then use the legal tools that exist.
A cautionary case makes it concrete, and carries no politics:
a family chose Singapore residence for tax reasons; their son later went to the US to
study, wanted to build a life there, and needed US status, and the whole arrangement stopped
working.
The lesson: cross-border tax planning has to account for the next generation's
path. That applies to our client base more than most.
The core logic: a high rate isn't a high burden
The foundation of the second half: what matters is how much of what you make is taxable at all, more than what your rate is.
- High assets aren't a high burden: assets aren't taxed; realised income is.
- High income isn't either: unsold stock, unsold property, and undrawn retirement growth are all untaxed.
A useful analogy: the hen is the asset, the eggs are the income, and only the net profit is taxable. Keeping the hen isn't taxed (there's no federal wealth tax). Selling $100,000 of eggs? Not necessarily, because the cost of keeping and selling comes out first. Only the net is taxed.
UncleCalifornia's three uncles
Long-term gains | |
|---|---|---|
| Uncle Sam(联邦)Federal | 37% | 20% |
| Uncle Obama(NIIT)NIIT | 3.8% | 3.8% |
| Uncle State(加州)California | 13.3% | 13.3% |
Total | 54.1% | 37.1% |
The 13.3% is the 12.3% top bracket plus the 1% mental health services tax on income above $1 million. Wages also carry California SDI at 1.3% for 2026, with no wage ceiling since 2024.
Three kinds of bond, and why it matters in a high-tax state
California | |
|---|---|---|
In-state issues are also exempt, so a California resident holding California munis pays neither |
13.3%State-exempt: federal only, saving the 13.3% |
54.1%Taxable; the only one approaching 54.1% |
So bonds are not compared on coupon but on taxable-equivalent yield: for a California resident at a 50% combined rate, a 4% California municipal is equivalent to an 8% taxable bond.
Compounding magnifies the tax too
| $100 万投资 30 年$1M over 30 years | 结果Result |
|---|---|
These figures assume about 8% a year: $1M at 8% for 30 years is about $10M; net of 30% tax the return is 5.6%, net of 40% it is 4.8%, and compounding each for 30 years gives the last two rows. Say the 8% out loud, or the audience will hear it as a general result.
In the US you pay once, one way or the other
Route A: untaxed in, taxed out
Not taxed when earned, not taxed as it grows, taxed on withdrawal. Traditional retirement plans. It suits someone whose rate is high now and lower later.
Route B: taxed in, untaxed out
Taxed first, then untaxed as it grows and untaxed when used. It suits someone expecting higher future rates, or planning to pass it on.
Two categories are never taxed:
① Assets formed abroad before immigrating: wealth earned and accumulated
outside the US before becoming a US tax resident. That principal is
not US taxable income. Timing is everything.
② Gifts from foreign persons abroad: a gift from a non-US person outside the
US isn't income to the recipient. But receiving more than $100,000 from foreign persons
in a year requires Form 3520. That's a filing obligation, not a tax, and
failing to file carries a penalty of up to 25% of the gift.
成为美国税务居民之后,这笔资产产生的收入和增值就是美国的应税所得;
That is only half of it, and the other half is the most expensive
misunderstanding a new arrival has: "assets formed before immigrating aren't taxed"
is about the principal. Once you are a US tax resident,
the income and appreciation on those assets are US taxable, and
the US does not reset your cost basis to market value when you acquire status
(some countries do; the US doesn't).
So an asset that appreciated heavily abroad will, when eventually sold as a US person,
be taxed by the US on that pre-immigration appreciation too. That is what
the word "before" carries in "tax planning before immigration":
whether to dispose of or restructure something before acquiring status is a decision
with a deadline, and the deadline passes.
Then there are PFICs, the other frequent trap for new arrivals from Asia: foreign mutual funds, wealth-management products, and certain savings-type insurance contracts can be treated as passive foreign investment companies under US law, triggering a punitive regime and Form 8621 reporting that is genuinely painful to unwind. It belongs on the same "before you arrive" list. Both of these are calls for the client's cross-border tax adviser, not for us.
Rentals: four deductions, and depreciation
Note: this entire section applies to rental and investment property only, not to a primary residence.
Four deductions: mortgage interest, property tax, depreciation, and operating costs. Three of them are money you actually spent. Only depreciation is money you didn't spend and can still deduct, and that is the whole point of the section.
Residential rental |
Nonresidential real property |
| 0 | 土地不折旧Land is not depreciated(只有地上物可以) (only improvements) |
Straight line. The rationale is wear: a building ages and eventually has to be rebuilt, so it depreciates; land doesn't, so it can't. The split between land and improvements usually follows the assessor's ratio, or can be established with a cost segregation study.
Worked example: splitting $10M
A $10M purchase splits into $4M of land and $6M of improvements.
Residential: $6M ÷ 27.5 ≈ $218,000 a year. Commercial: $6M ÷ 39 ≈
$154,000.
Same building, a $64,000 annual difference, worth
about $25,600 a year at a 40% rate.
0$200,000 of rent, taxed at zero
Actually spent? |
|---|---|---|
Annual rent | $200,000 | — |
| ③ 折旧Depreciation | − $80,000 | ✗ 没有,纸上亏损✗ no, a paper loss |
Taxable income | $0 | — |
| 实际留在手上的现金Cash actually in hand | ≈ $80,000 | = 折旧金额,免税= the depreciation, untaxed |
Illustrative figures: the real outcome depends on the loan, the price, the rent, and the individual's tax position.
But depreciation isn't free: recapture
Every year of depreciation lowers the cost basis by that much. On sale, the depreciation taken is recaptured as unrecaptured §1250 gain, taxed federally at up to 25%, and only the appreciation beyond that gets long-term capital gain treatment (20% plus the 3.8% NIIT).
So depreciation is properly described as deferral plus rate conversion, not a free deduction: it pushes the tax out by decades, which compounds, and converts income that would have been taxed at 37%–54.1% into recapture taxed later at 25%. And it need never be realised: a 1031 keeps deferring it, and a step-up eventually zeroes it.
Passive loss limits: same building, different owners, different results
- The rule: rentals are passive, and passive losses offset passive income, not wages.
- Exception one: active participation allows up to $25,000 against ordinary income, phasing out from $100,000 of MAGI and gone at $150,000.
- Exception two: real estate professional status (more than half of all working hours in real property trades and over 750 hours a year) makes the rental non-passive so losses can offset active income. It requires contemporaneous time records.
- Unused losses aren't lost: they carry forward, and release on disposal of the property.
The practical implication is blunt: a $400,000-a-year engineer and a full-time property investor buy the same building to completely different tax effect. Establish which one you're talking to before you talk about depreciation at all.
Need money? Borrow, don't sell
A loan isn't income. Cash-out refinancing the appreciation isn't taxed; selling realises the gain and triggers both capital gains tax and depreciation recapture. Sell and you pay; borrow and you don't.
And there's a second half: money borrowed and spent reduces the net estate, and estate tax is computed on the net. That becomes the crux of the next section.
The 1031 exchange
Investment or rental property exchanged for investment or rental property is treated as no sale at all, so both the capital gain and the depreciation recapture defer. There's no limit on the number of properties on either side, and no limit on how many times you do it, so in principle it continues for life.
Proc.
- A primary residence doesn't qualify. It has to be genuinely converted to rental use first, typically for at least two years with proper documentation. That's the Rev. Proc. 2008-16 safe harbour, not a statutory period.
- Since 2018 it applies only to real property; equipment, vehicles, and art no longer qualify.
Two deadlines: 45 and 180
| 第 0 天Day 0 | 旧房完成出售(交割日起算,日历日,不是工作日)The relinquished property closes; count calendar days from there, not business days |
Identify the replacement in writing. Usually the three-property rule, or the 200% rule |
Close on the replacement, and no later than that year's filing deadline including extensions, whichever comes first |
A year-end exchange has to file an extension. Sell in December and
180 days runs to June, but without an extension the real deadline is April 15,
losing nearly two months for nothing.
And an intuition trap: 180 calendar days is not six months. Closing July 1,
day 180 is December 28; "six months" would be January 1, which is day 184.
Outside federally declared disaster extensions, the IRS does not flex on this.
Three technical requirements
Equal or up
The new price must be at least the old one, the new debt at least the old debt, and all proceeds reinvested. Any shortfall is boot, and boot is taxable. The usual sources: taking cash out, or taking on less debt.
⚠️ The qualified intermediary: the fatal one
The proceeds must be held by a qualified intermediary; the taxpayer can neither actually nor constructively receive them. Once the money touches your account the exchange fails, with no cure. And the QI has to be in place before closing; after the fact is too late.
Estate tax and step-up: turning deferral into exemption
Step-up in Basis(IRC §1014):
A step-up in basis (IRC §1014): at death the heir's basis resets to the date-of-death market value, and every dollar of unrealised appreciation before that is free of income tax. A share bought at $1 and worth $500 at death gives the heir a $500 basis, and the $499 of gain is gone. For real estate: a lifetime of 1031-deferred tax zeroes out at once, recapture included.
Net versus gross: why the estate tax can be gentler
Capital gains tax | |
|---|---|---|
| 税率Rate | 联邦最高 40%Up to 40% federal | 加州综合最高 37.1%Up to 37.1% combined in California |
Money borrowed and spent isn't in the estate | 不论借了多少,都按全额增值课However much was borrowed, the full gain is taxed |
None |
| 继承人的增值税Heir's gain | Step-up,归零Stepped up, zero | 另有折旧回吐(最高 25%)Plus recapture at up to 25% |
On rate alone, 40% beats 37.1% and the estate tax looks worse. On base, one is computed net and the other gross, and that's the whole difference.
A · Sell during life | B · 借款花用 + 过世传承B · Borrow, spend, and pass on | |
|---|---|---|
| 中途操作What happens | 直接出售Sold outright | 再融资借出 $3,000 万花用(不课所得税)$30M refinanced out and spent (not income) |
| 课税基数Taxable base | 增值 $4,900 万(贷款不影响)The $49M gain (borrowing is irrelevant) | 净遗产 $2,000 万($5,000 万 − $3,000 万)A $20M net estate |
Stepped up to $50M, so the income tax on the gain is zero |
An illustration, subject to borrowing cost, rate risk, state tax, gift tax integration, and liquidity. And the borrowing cost isn't a footnote: interest on $30M is real money every year, and the strategy only works while appreciation and cash flow cover it over the long run.
The 2026 exemptions
Per person, lifetime, from 2026 and made permanent |
A couple, with portability of the unused amount |
The 2026 annual gift exclusion, per recipient |
The exemption for a non-resident alien's US-situs assets, 250 times smaller |
The last row deserves its own moment. $60,000 against $15 million is an order-of-magnitude difference for a client who holds US assets without US status, and most of them have no idea.
Step-upCalifornia's double step-up
Community property states
(IRC §1014(b)(6))
California, Nevada, Texas, Arizona and others. On the first death the whole community property steps up, and on the second death it steps up again. Two full step-ups in one lifetime. (IRC §1014(b)(6))
Non-community property states
Most of the east coast and midwest. On the first death only the decedent's half steps up; the survivor's half keeps its original basis, so only half the gain gets relief.
Which is why the action list at the end includes: check how the property is titled. In California the form of title decides whether the step-up is 100% or 50%. Changing one piece of paper can be worth six figures.
Gift versus inheritance: the iron rule
Inheritance | |
|---|---|---|
Carryover: the recipient takes your original cost | 垫高基础:以过世日市价为成本Stepped up: date-of-death market value |
Eliminated |
Gift tax on $50M, and the child's basis is still $1M, so a future sale is taxed on $49M | 遗产税按净额算,孩子的成本 = $5,000 万,立刻卖出,增值税为零Estate tax on the net, and the child's basis is $50M, so an immediate sale has no gain |
The rule: highly appreciated assets go through the estate; low-basis-gap assets and cash go by gift.
The comparison with Canada is persuasive:
Canada has no estate tax, which sounds good until death triggers a deemed disposition
taxing all unrealised gain, with no step-up.
The example: bought at $500k, worth $10M.
In the US, a step-up to $10M and no income tax. In Canada, a $9.5M gain, half of it
included, at a top marginal rate around 53.5%, roughly $2.54M.
($9.5M × 50% × 53.5% = $2.54M.)
The price of no estate tax is no step-up.
Four baskets: what makes everything above safe
This is the seatbelt: the mistake is unhedged leverage, not leverage itself.
现金流
Cash flow
Reliable income. Rent is only a small part of it, because rent stops when the unit is empty.

Liquidity for the next few years: surprises, opportunities, and a buffer under the leveraged positions.

The long-term growth position. Volatile, and over a long enough horizon the main source of appreciation.
Leveraged rental property
Where depreciation, 1031, and the step-up all live, and where the risk is most concentrated.
The order: build the floor before you attack. Baskets one and two are there so you never have to sell at the worst moment, not to make money. With them underneath, a vacancy, a rate rise, or a market fall doesn't force a sale and doesn't break the plan.
And it protects everything above it: a forced sale voids the entire 1031-and-step-up strategy in one move. One question is worth asking a client directly: "if a rental sat empty for six months and rates rose two points at the same time, would I have to sell anything?" If the answer is yes, the first two baskets aren't big enough.
Five things to hold to when presenting this
- Don't say "it's fine if it's in the US," and don't use the words "tax haven." Information flow is not the filing obligation: a Chinese tax resident still reports income from a US account under Chinese law. Use the thesis from earlier instead: choose one tax residence and pay properly there.
- "Assets formed before immigrating aren't taxed" is half a sentence. The untaxed part is the principal; income and appreciation after you acquire status are fully taxable, and the US gives no basis reset on the day status begins. Add the PFIC problem, and both questions have to be asked before status is acquired. Afterwards there is no choice left to make.
- The $1M-to-$10M figure needs its 8% assumption said out loud. Without it the number reads as a general result.
- "Convert two-thirds to three-quarters to non-taxable" is a goal, not a promise. How much any client can actually do depends entirely on their income shape, their assets, and their status. Stated as an outcome, it becomes a guarantee.
- Hold the boundary: this session is tax architecture and contains no product. Life insurance is deliberately left for separate treatment, because covering it carelessly is worse than not covering it. Producing an illustration in this session destroys the single most valuable thing it has, its credibility.

Internal training material for contracted agents; not for forwarding to clients. Statutes, announcement numbers, and data are current as of writing; tax law and information-exchange rules change frequently, so confirm the current version before use. Every tax outcome depends heavily on the individual (residence, tax status, asset structure, holding period, marital status), so the same tool can produce entirely different results for different people. This page is not tax, legal, accounting, or investment advice, and it is not an offer or recommendation of any security or insurance product. Any specific arrangement must first be reviewed by the client's own CPA or enrolled agent, attorney, and cross-border tax specialist, with a written opinion on the facts.
