Life insurance splits into two families: term (temporary, protection only) and permanent (lifetime coverage with cash value). The five generations are essentially a series of trade-offs across four dimensions: flexibility, transparency, return, and risk.
1. The timeline
Term Life
Term Life
Pure protection. Cheap, but it expires, and there's no cash value.
Whole Life
Whole Life
Solved the expiry problem, but premium and face amount are locked, and it's expensive.
Universal Life
Universal Life
Solved flexibility and transparency, but growth tracks interest rates with no strategy choice.
Variable Universal Life
Solved low returns by letting you pick funds — at the cost of having no floor at all.
Indexed Universal Life
Solved the no-floor problem: indexed crediting, capped on the upside, floored on the downside.
IUL with living benefits
Living Life(2016)、Living Life By Design(2019)、Living Life Defender(2023)、 Living Life Defender 2.0(2025)。
From 2007, living benefit riders were built into IUL systematically. National Life's line runs Living Life (2016), Living Life By Design (2019), Living Life Defender (2023), and Living Life Defender 2.0 (2025).
二、定期寿险 Term Life(18 世纪 –)2. Term Life (18th century –)
优点Pros
- Very cheap while you're young and healthy
- Locks in your current health classification
缺点Cons
- Temporary only: 10 / 15 / 20 / 30 years
- No accumulation — like auto or health insurance, the premium is spent
- Renewal after expiry is very expensive, and approval isn't guaranteed
Total |
|---|---|---|
Term ages 36–66 |
$1,500 × 30 | $45,000 |
Renewal, ages 66–86 approval not guaranteed |
$15,000 × 20 | $300,000 |
Total (coverage ends at 85, nothing saved) | $345,000 | |
IUL ages 36–120 |
$9,600 × 15 | $144,000 |
In the IUL column that $144,000 is saved, grows tax-deferred, and conservatively leaves roughly $350,000 available at retirement — with coverage running to 120. The term column's $345,000 is spent.
None of this makes term a bad product. When the coverage gap is large and the budget is tight — a new $800k mortgage, a two-year-old at home — term is the most efficient tool available, and buying it is the right call. The problem is only this: as a lifetime plan, the math doesn't work.
Whole Life(1950s –)3. Whole Life (1950s –)
优点Pros
- Lifetime coverage to age 120 — fixes term's expiry problem
- With premiums paid on schedule, coverage and interest growth are guaranteed
缺点Cons
- Premium and face amount are fixed once issued
- Low fixed growth: 3–4% plus a non-guaranteed dividend
- Costs aren't itemized, and there's no strategy choice
- Policy loan rates are high, typically 5–6% fixed
- Expensive
代表公司:New York Life 纽约人寿、Mass Mutual 万通人寿、MetLife 大都会、 Northwestern Mutual 西北互惠。
Same insured, same $1M face: whole life runs $22,000/year × 15 years = $330,000, versus IUL at $9,600/year × 15 years = $144,000. Typical carriers: New York Life, MassMutual, MetLife, Northwestern Mutual.
Universal Life(1979 –)4. Universal Life (1979 –)
优点Pros
- Flexible premium and face amount — fixes whole life's rigidity
- Costs are itemized and visible
缺点Cons
- Growth tracks declared interest rates, around 5%
- No strategy choice
- Loan rates of 5–6% fixed
- Years of underfunding can lapse the policy
- Still expensive: $12,000/year × 15 years = $180,000
VUL(1985 –)5. Variable Universal Life (1985 –)
优点Pros
- Flexible premium and face amount
- Higher return potential than WL or UL
- You choose the sub-accounts: equity, bond, and so on
缺点Cons
- High risk — no floor at all
- Underfunding or losses over several years can lapse the policy
- May carry investment management fees
- Loan rates 5–6% fixed
VUL's problem isn't low returns — it's a mismatch between risk and purpose. If a market drop shrinks cash value below what's needed to pay policy charges, the policy can fail at precisely the moment it's most needed.
IUL(1997 –)6. Indexed Universal Life (1997 –)
优点Pros
- Flexible premium and face amount
- Indexed to the S&P 500; historically around 6–7% compounded
- Multiple loan types, including variable and wash loans
- A floor in down markets — fixes VUL's core risk
- The best cost-to-coverage ratio among permanent products
One thing to know
- Upside is capped, around 11% at base; the Living Life Defender riders lift that ceiling to 17% and add a no-lapse guarantee
Leverage compared
代表公司:National Life Group 国家人寿、 Corebridge(原 AIG)、TransAmerica、Allianz、Nationwide、Pacific Life 太平洋人寿。
Per dollar of premium, IUL supports roughly two and a half times the coverage whole life does. That's what "best cost-to-coverage ratio" means concretely. Carriers in this space: National Life Group, Corebridge (formerly AIG), Transamerica, Allianz, Nationwide, Pacific Life.
7. Does "buy term and invest the difference" hold up?
BTID(Buy Term and Invest the Difference)
BTID — buy term and invest the difference — is the standard argument against permanent life insurance: buy the cheapest term, invest the savings, and you'll end up ahead. As a pure model, under certain assumptions, that's true. The problem is the assumptions.
Buy Term and Invest the Difference Revisited
A study titled Buy Term and Invest the Difference Revisited concluded that claims of BTID's dominance in financial analysis are flawed in several respects, and that the financial discipline BTID requires is unrealistic for many consumers. A second study, Study Debunks 'Buy Term & Invest The Difference', makes two specific points:
- Term lapse rates are more than double those of whole life. Many people simply don't keep the term policy long enough for it to provide the protection it was bought for.
- The "invest the difference" step often doesn't happen. The national savings rate alone contradicts it, and individual investors statistically tend to buy high and sell low, capturing well below index returns.
The study's own conclusion: no single approach can be claimed to dominate for all consumers. We agree. If you have a high, stable savings rate, real investment discipline, and adequate coverage elsewhere, BTID may well be the better answer for you — we won't push IUL. But if you're like most people — plans interrupted by life events, anxiety in down markets, one skipped month quietly becoming permanent — then a product that structures the saving behavior often outperforms a theoretically superior plan that doesn't get executed.
