From Breaking the Ice to the Invitation

An invitation has one job: earn the right to keep talking. Closing comes later. This is how a stranger becomes an acquaintance, and how an acquaintance agrees to meet.

1. Why invitations fail

Not because the product is weak, and not because the opportunity is weak. Four reasons, all of them self-inflicted:

Switching to insurance too fast

They go defensive immediately, and everything after that sounds like a pitch.

It sounds like a sales opener

They stop asking "should I listen" and start looking for the exit.

No warmth was built first

Without trust, good content still bounces off.

No clear next step

The conversation ends on "let's talk sometime," which means it ended.

So the goal of breaking the ice is to make them willing to talk again, not to make them buy. Get the goal right and the wording follows.

2. Breaking the ice runs on psychological safety

Make the other person feel safe: they won't be sold to, and they won't be used. Safety comes from three signals:

The four things never to do

Opening with "got time to talk insurance?"

Sending a long bio or company blurb

Judgment statements like "you need insurance"

Asking to meet with no warm-up

3. Sort by temperature before you speak

The same sentence lands differently depending on the relationship. Decide which band someone is in before you write to them.

What comes first
Just added, just met at an event, introduced by someone Make who you are and why you're reaching out feel natural
Common ground, or what they've been up to
Care first, share second, invite last

This scale is how well you know each other. A client's attitude toward insurance itself is a separate scale; see Five Sales Questions · client temperature.

4. The ice-breaking formula

Four moves, in this order:

Connection

连接

Connection

Make them relaxed enough to reply.

Context

情境

Context

Let the topic arrive naturally instead of awkwardly.

Curiosity

好奇

Curiosity

Get them to ask, "so what do you do?"

Call to action

下一步

Call to action

A low-pressure invitation.

5. Three entry points, with templates

The more natural the entry, the lower the defenses. Three of them: a shared source (who introduced you, where you met), shared interests or experience (kids, fitness, travel, industry, background), and something recent (a holiday, a trend, something they just posted).

Cold · source-based

"Hi ___, this is ___. We met at ___. Just added you and wanted to say hello. Is now an okay time for a couple of messages? Totally fine if not."

Three moves: justify the source, greet lightly, and leave them an exit.

Cold · a specific compliment

"刚看到你发的 ___(跑步/旅行/孩子比赛),你写的那句 ___ 我很有共鸣。

"I just saw your post about ___. The line about ___ really landed with me. Have you been doing that for a while?"

The compliment has to be specific or it reads as a formula. The point is to move from "who are you" to "we're talking about the same thing."

Warm · reconnecting

"___, long time. I remember you were working on ___. How did that go? I've been deep in ___ lately and thought of you."

Structure: what's new, a shared memory, one light question. The subtext is "I'm here to reconnect, not to sell you."

Hot · care first

"How have you all been? I remember you had ___ going on. By the way, I've been helping a number of families sort out their protection and cash flow, and there are a couple of things almost everyone misses. If you don't mind, can I walk you through it sometime? Ten minutes."

Care, then share, then invite. Don't push people close to you.

6. Face to face with a stranger: five steps

Step 1 · the first thirty seconds

Smile naturally; hold eye contact three to five seconds, no longer. Don't open on business. Use one of three entries: the setting ("nice place, do you come here often?"), a light compliment ("you're a good talker. Is that your work?"), or common ground ("I'm from there too. Whereabouts?").

Step 2 · build familiarity

People like people who resemble them. Match their pace and tone a little, and look for overlap in interests and history. A short personal story makes you real: to a new immigrant, "when I first got here I wouldn't drive the freeway either"; to a new mother, "I did the first one on my own too."

Step 3 · listen and ask

The ratio is thirty percent you, seventy percent them. Three kinds of question: open ("how did you get into this?"), follow-up ("I saw your post. Is everything alright?"), and appreciative ("you clearly know this well"). Repeat their own words back; that is what proves you were listening.

Step 4 · build trust

Empathize ("I get it, I was there too"), show a value you share ("I want more time with my kids too"), and ask for one small commitment: swap contacts now, meet casually later.

Step 5 · move to business, if it fits

Relationship first, business second. The bridge is meeting a need of theirs: "you're looking for a tutor? I know someone." "We've got an event coming up. Come meet a few people."

Steer clear of

Age, immigration status, politics, religion, and bad news. Also watch how much of the airtime you take, and keep your posture and gestures open.

7. Make them ask you

Don't persuade. Make them want more. Three ways, all of which stop halfway:

Result only

"We restructured things for a family last week, and they stopped wasting a few thousand a year."

Pattern only

"Most people think they have enough coverage. What's usually missing isn't the amount. It's the structure."

Story only

"A friend found out the hard way that the problem wasn't whether it paid. It was how it had been set up."

8. Two kinds of invitation

One on one

To an event

One-line invitations for people you know

Three rules: keep it casual, give a reason that makes sense, and leave them room.

Name a time: not "sometime" but "does Wednesday evening work." Keep the language light ("grab a coffee," "just catch up"). One on one beats a group. And ask before you fix it, so they had a say.

9. Three lines that take the pressure off

"You don't have to decide anything now."
"If it's not a fit, that's completely fine."
"If it turns out not to be useful, we've just had a chat."

Saying these doesn't make you look weak. People find it easier to say yes after hearing them.

10. Six common refusals

The same three moves every time: agree first and don't argue, then reframe, then offer a smaller next step.

You can answer
你是今晚晚一点方便,还是明天中午?」"Of course you are. Let's keep it to one thing then. Later tonight, or tomorrow midday?"
十分钟看一下,你觉得有必要吗?」"Good, that means you think ahead. I'm not asking you to switch. I just want to see whether the structure is complete. Most people have something; what's missing is usually liability, income interruption, or the children. Ten minutes. Worth a look?"
I don't want to buy 「完全理解,我也不希望你因为我去买任何东西。 可以吗?」"Understood, and I don't want you buying anything because of me. Let me just leave you one thing that may be useful later. If it isn't, we stop there. Fair?"
I don't have the money 「我懂,很多家庭现在都觉得钱不够用。 I hear that. And when money is tight, money going to the wrong place hurts more. So let's do one thing: go through what you already have and see whether anything is paid for but not actually protecting you. Fifteen minutes."
Let me think about it 「当然可以。 Two ways to make that easier. A: I send you a one-pager and you decide whether ten minutes is worth it. B: we book the ten minutes and you decide afterwards. Which do you prefer?"
I'm not interested in insurance 「懂,很多人一听'保险'就有压力。 The word itself puts people on edge. So let's not talk about insurance. Let's talk about household risk and cash flow. There's one thing almost everyone overlooks. Want to hear it?"

A few others

11. Bowing out well

Understand and thank them

"No problem at all. Thanks for being straight with me."

Leave something behind

One reminder, one useful thing. Don't let the contact net out at zero.

Keep the door open

"If you ever want a second look at how things are set up, I'm here."

12. Follow up without chasing or vanishing

As a rule of thumb, most sales happen somewhere between the fifth and twelfth contact. You don't need to push, but you do need to keep showing up.

价值型Value

A one-pager, a reminder, a useful link.

生活型Life

Holidays, checking in, shared interests.

进度型Progress

Gently: is now a better time to pick up where we left off?

Rhythm: new contacts, one light touch a week. Anyone who has shown interest: day 3, day 7, day 14.

Four confirmations once it's booked

13. Thirty minutes a day

  • 10 minutes: three ice-breaking openers to new contacts.
  • 10 minutes: follow up with three people you've already spoken to.
  • 10 minutes: lock two meeting times, using the two-option close.

At least one "next step" a day. Ten booked minutes counts. Doing it consistently beats saying it perfectly.

14. 心态14. Mindset

One hard line

Read the relationship and pick your wording, but do not say anything untrue. Every technique here rests on it. The moment someone finds a gap between what you said and what is so, everything before it is worth nothing.

15. The first five minutes of the meeting

Getting the meeting is only the start. The opening breaks into three steps:

Build rapport first

Don't jump to business unless they do. Look for cues (their home, clothes, car) and common ground: events, sports, hobbies, what's in the news. The goal is a relaxed prospect who talks.

Open according to how you met

Referral: honour and thank the referrer, say at a high level what you did for them (no details), then your value. Cold prospect: introduce yourself and the business, then your value.

Agree what kind of meeting this is

Introductory: they're getting to know you; exploratory: a deeper look at goals; immediate solution: a pressing need or deadline. Ask permission to cover the wider picture, and confirm how much time they have.

Don't open with unprovable outcome claims such as "my clients retired early".
