Our licence is life and health. Understanding investing is for following what a client is telling you and placing insurance correctly, not for giving securities advice. Recommending individual stocks, funds, ETFs, variable annuities, or structured notes requires a securities licence, and without one you don't do it, not even as "just sharing." Everything here about index funds and structured notes exists so you can follow, ask, and refer.
The same boundary applies to anything an outside platform brings us to sell: private fund interests, pre-IPO secondaries, structured credit, and anything described as "for accredited investors only." All of it is securities. The test has nothing to do with whether the product is good. It is only this: soliciting securities investments for transaction-based compensation requires the corresponding registration. If a deck says "we never act as a broker-dealer" on one page and lists a sales commission percentage on another, those two statements contradict each other, and the second one is what counts.
And one more, put plainly: treating our insurance client list as a conversion pool for these products is precisely the pattern regulators look for. A client entrusting you with their protection has not entrusted you with their investment decisions. When something like this comes along, ask first whether you hold that licence, and refer it out if you don't, regardless of what it pays.
1 · The arithmetic of financial independence
There's a line from Kant that turns out to be an unexpectedly useful definition: freedom isn't doing whatever you want; it's being able to say no to what you don't. Translated for a salaried household: I could leave a job I dislike without worrying about the bills.
What decides it is whether there's passive income, not the size of the balance. Passive income above living costs means work becomes optional. For most people there's exactly one accessible form of it: investment return.
Accumulate 25 times annual spending, which corresponds to drawing about 4% a year. $80,000 of spending implies $2,000,000.
Two dials only: principal (earn more, spend less, raise the savings rate) and return. And there's no waiting until it's assembled: save and invest at the same time, so principal and compounding run together.
But 4% is not a law. It comes from US historical data, a thirty-year horizon, and a particular stock-bond mix, and its weakest point is sequence-of-returns risk (see section 6). Present it as a rule of thumb, never as a guarantee.
10%2 · What returns about 10%
Every investment is one of two things:
Low volatility, low return
Deposits, money market funds, short bonds, CDs, high-yield savings. Stable, liquid, almost never down, but over time frequently behind inflation, with purchasing power quietly draining away.
High volatility, high return
Equities. Uncomfortable in the short run, highest over the long run. More return requires more tolerance for volatility. They're the two ends of one scale, with no third option.
The long record
There are two sets of figures: the S&P 500 at roughly 10.2% nominal a year including dividends, from 1926, and after inflation, equities about 6.8%, bonds about 3.6%, gold about 0.6%, and cash negative. So wealth is built on equity ownership, not on deposits.
They're not one series. Say them separately. The 10.2% nominal is the standard large-cap figure from 1926. The 6.8% / 3.6% / 0.6% set comes from a much longer series with a far earlier starting point. Reading them as "10.2% minus inflation equals 6.8%" is wrong: the periods differ. Name each one's start date and both hold up.
Why ordinary investors shouldn't pick stocks
Four reasons, which you can use as they stand:
- Picking takes expertise, effort, and above all temperament; a beginner walks in unarmed.
- Timing almost nobody gets right over time, and trading in and out is how you miss the days that matter.
- Emotion makes people chase rallies and sell declines, a reliable way to lose.
- A single stock may not revert to any mean. It can stay down, or go to zero.
The alternative is index funds, or in Bogle's words: "Don't look for the needle. Buy the haystack." Rather than guessing which company wins, own the market. Three advantages: very low cost (commonly 0.03–0.10% against 0.5–1%+ for active funds, which compounds into a large gap), diversification that can't go to zero (a failing company is simply replaced), and the instruction in Buffett's own will: 90% in an S&P 500 index fund and 10% in short-term government bonds.
3 · The tax-advantaged account is the moat
The framing is right: the same index fund in the right account is a different outcome.
The point |
|---|---|---|
The employer match is free money; take all of it |
Deductible now, taxed on withdrawal |
After-tax in; growth and withdrawals permanently free |
| HSA | $4,400(个人,家庭更高)$4,400 self-only; more for family | 三重免税:抵税、延税、合格医疗支出免税Triple tax-free: deductible, deferred, and free for qualified medical |
The Roth IRA income range is adjusted every year; check the current notice before using it, or simply say that higher incomes are phased out of direct Roth contributions and go through the backdoor. Details are in Tax Planning.
4 · Tool one: dollar-cost averaging
A fixed amount, on a fixed date, automatically. It solves three problems at once: no lump sum, no idea when to buy, no idea how much. A fixed amount buys less when prices are high and more when they're low, without any decision.
The line that matters: don't stop when it falls. While you're accumulating you're a buyer, and a lower price is a better one. The most painful stretch is the most valuable. Which is why it runs on the brokerage's auto-invest: make it something that doesn't require a decision.
Time IN the market beats TIMING the market.
"You have to be there when the lightning strikes." The market's largest gains cluster into a handful of days, and moving in and out is how you miss them. The phrase worth remembering word for word: time in the market beats timing the market. The most expensive ordinary mistake is leaving too early: enduring several bad years and then selling the moment it's back to even.
5 · Tool two: allocation and rebalancing
A useful image for diversification is a table's four legs: a household's finances on one leg (all equities, or all house) goes over at the first knock. Cash, bonds, equities, and gold each do a different job, and because they don't move together, something is holding when something else isn't.
DCA is the inflow pipe: how new salary gets invested. It suits
beginners and younger clients.
Allocation is the whole pool: how existing assets are arranged. It suits
people who already have savings, and retirees.
They don't conflict: trades inside an allocation framework can still be phased in.
Most people can't articulate this distinction; doing so makes you sound like a
professional.
There's no right equity weight. It's set by age, income stability, risk tolerance, and experience: young, steady income, willing to learn means it can run high (70–90%); older or less stable means less equity and more in bonds and principal-protected assets.
Rebalancing turns the hardest human thing into a mechanical rule: return to the target weights on a schedule, which sells what rose and buys what fell: buying low and selling high, enforced. Once a year, or when a weight drifts 10 points. No screen-watching required.
6 · Probability, and sequence-of-returns risk
The starting point: investing is working with uncertainty, not being graded on being right.
Raise the odds per attempt
Margin of safety, and staying away from situations that can go badly wrong. But an ordinary investor rarely has an informational edge.
Raise the number of attempts
51% versus 49% is nothing on one trial and everything over many. This is the realistic path.
Run a system, don't bet once
What determines an ordinary investor's outcome is whether there's a system with a long-run edge that actually keeps running, not selection or timing.
Long horizons reveal it
Short-run results are mostly luck; the longer the horizon the closer you get to the system's average. A method improves the odds; it can't promise the result.
Retirement's hidden risk
Sequence-of-returns risk: the same average return, opposite outcomes.
While accumulating, a falling market is good, because you're buying cheaply. In retirement you're withdrawing: a bear market in the first few years means selling into the decline, and the principal that's gone doesn't come back when the market does. This is the 4% rule's weak point.
The answer is direct: put the first few years of retirement spending into a bucket that doesn't move with the market. That's what an annuity is for, and it's the joint where investing connects to insurance (see section 9).
7 · Savings rate beats rate of return
For most people, saving is harder than earning a good return, and much more within their control. Three habits:
- A wishlist: write it down instead of buying it. Rank it once the impulse passes, and spend on what actually matters to you.
- A budget is a watch: it tells you where you are. The hard part isn't building it, it's whether the income covers the spending.
- Pay yourself first: set aside the saving before anything else, then spend the rest. Automatic investing is enforced saving.
8 · The pre-flight checklist
If the checklist fails, don't invest yet. And the checklist doubles as the best opening you have with a client: a diagnosis rather than a pitch.
Take inventory
How many accounts, how much in each, what's owed? What's the net after debt?
Kill high-interest debt
Credit card balances and consumer loans cost more than any reasonable return. A mortgage isn't high-interest debt.
Cover the necessary risks
Health cover, term life on whoever the household depends on, disability income. The life jacket goes on first.
Fund the emergency reserve
Three to six months of spending in a money market fund. Its job is to stop you selling into a bear market to pay the bills.
9 · Where insurance fits
This is the heaviest section: insurance doesn't compete with investing for the same dollar; it's the piece the portfolio is missing.
Protect the earning power
Term life, disability income, health and long-term care. So that one event can't wipe out the plan.
A floor, plus lifetime income
Cash-value life insurance, fixed indexed annuities, lifetime income annuities. A principal floor, a tax advantage, and income for life.
The growth engine
Index funds and equities inside the 401(k), IRA, or brokerage account. Volatility in exchange for return.
The funding waterfall
Emergency fund → employer match → high-interest debt → tax-advantaged accounts → fill the protection gaps. Cash-value insurance and annuities usually come after the tax-advantaged room is used up, or where a high income is shut out of Roth.
Learn this one word for word: "it isn't the first dollar, but for a high earner who wants more tax-free room it's the sixth layer that matters." Volunteering "it isn't the first dollar" builds more trust than any feature.
IUL, both sides
优点
Upside
No loss from a market decline (a 0% floor); tax-deferred growth; tax-free access through policy loans (provided the policy stays in force; a lapse with a loan outstanding turns the gain into taxable income in a single year); no contribution limit and no income test; a death benefit included.
代价
Cost
The cap limits the upside (commonly around 9–12%, varying by carrier and year); there are insurance and administrative charges; it has to be held long term; it has to be funded properly; and an illustration is not a guarantee, and you have to say so.
Annuities: hedging two things at once
Fixed indexed
A 0% floor, index-linked, with a cap or participation rate (commonly 80–90%, varying by carrier and year). Tax-deferred. Like an IUL without the large insurance charge.
Immediate / income
One payment in exchange for guaranteed income for life, as long as you live, hedging longevity.
递延 + GLWB
Deferred with GLWB
Grows during accumulation, then switches on guaranteed lifetime withdrawals. It pays through a bear market in the first retirement years, which is exactly the sequence risk it hedges.
An annuity converts an asset into income that is guaranteed, lifelong, and indifferent to bear markets, a certainty neither stocks nor bonds can supply.
The honest comparison

The most valuable thing about this table is that it concedes three rows to index funds. Show it as it is and you stop being someone who only talks about their own product.
Appendix: MYGAs, PPNs, and structured notes
What follows is also about investment instruments, but most of it is not something we can sell:
① Structured notes are securities. Selling or recommending them requires the licence. ② The "principal protection" is the issuer's promise, not collateral. A note is an unsecured obligation of the issuing bank. If the issuer fails, the protection is worth nothing. It is the single most important risk in the instrument. ③ The historical figures shown for these notes are usually backtests. 2017 through 2026 was largely one long bull market; a good backtest over that window describes the window, not the product.
So the use of this section is: when a client raises it, you follow, you ask the right questions (who is the issuer, what's their rating, how are the observation dates set, what are the call provisions, what secondary liquidity exists), and you refer it to someone licensed. Don't turn it into a recommendation yourself.
MYGAFirst, the one we can sell: the MYGA
A multi-year guaranteed annuity is an insurance product, functioning like a long CD: a locked rate, and it can sit inside an IRA, Roth, or SEP. The reference rates used here are 5.00% for three years, 5.50% for five, and 5.40% for seven.
These rates move with the market, and the figures here are only true as of the day this was written. Pull the current rate sheet before quoting anything.
PPNs and two kinds of note: what they actually do
What's being traded away | |
|---|---|---|
A 36-month term, measured only from the start point to maturity; nothing in between matters. Principal returned in full at maturity, with the upside capped (for example at 25%). A capped upside in exchange for downside protection |
18–36 months, referencing the worst of three indices. Interest is paid for any month-end above −30%, and principal returns if maturity is above −30%. All of the upside in exchange for a fixed coupon |
36 months, again on the worst of three. If all three are above the start after one year it terminates early; otherwise it runs to maturity, paying 150% of the worst index, with a 20% downside buffer. Liquidity and issuer credit in exchange for leveraged upside |
One real example shows why the observation-date design matters: in March 2020 the Russell 2000 fell as much as −38.6% intra-period, well past the −30% barrier, but closed March 31 at −28.5%, and the coupon paid. Only the observation date counts, which filters out the panic in between.
But the design cuts both ways. The same rule can mean missing the barrier by half a point on the observation date and losing that month's coupon entirely, even if the period was mostly fine. An observation date isn't a protection mechanism. It's a single roll of the dice. Present both directions.
Guaranteed versus growth-linked income annuities
These two we can sell. There's a 25% bonus credited at issue; the guaranteed version then rolls up at 10% simple interest with a payout rate that rises with age, paying the same amount for life. The growth version is index-linked, with returns credited to the benefit account at 2.5× before income starts and 1.5× after.
"2.5×" is not a return; it's how the benefit account is credited. Take "a 6% actual return credited as 15%": that 15% grows the account that determines future income, not the money you could surrender for. This is the same trap as "the income value isn't the cash value" in The Retirement Account Map, and it is the single most complained-about thing in annuity sales. Whenever you say 2.5×, finish the same sentence with "and that account can't be taken as a lump sum."
How to open the conversation
Ask before you talk
What does the household spend in a year? Is there six months of reserve? Is the 401(k) match maxed? Is there still Roth room? Use the checklist above as the diagnostic.
画三层
Draw the three layers
Draw protection, safety bucket, and growth, plus the funding waterfall, and let them find their own gap.
Then place the product
A protection gap means term or IUL; fear of a bear market or a need for lifetime income means an annuity; a full account and a want for tax-free room means IUL. The product is the answer, not the opening.
Always both sides
The cap, the charges, the liquidity, and that an illustration isn't a guarantee. The trust that buys is worth far more than one policy.
The pocket card
- Return isn't free of volatility. High return requires tolerating the swings. Both stable and high is a fraud.
- Wealth comes from owning equity. Its long-run real return leads every other asset class.
- Buy the haystack. Index funds: diversified, cheap, can't go to zero.
- Take the free money first. The employer match outranks everything.
- Time in the market beats timing it. Miss the best ten days and the return halves.
- Buy low and sell high, mechanically. DCA to build, rebalancing to hold the line.
- Savings rate beats rate of return. Pay yourself first, and automate it.
- Insurance is the safety bucket and the protection layer. It supplies certainty; it doesn't compete with the growth layer.
- Ask first. Diagnose with the checklist; the product is the answer, not the opening.
- Always both sides. Honesty buys trust, and trust brings referrals.
