The New Agent's Launch Guide

From your first list of 20 names to your first ABC meeting and your first round of follow-up. This is a launch routine you can start on day one. The point isn't to become an expert first; it's to learn to spot the need, connect the expertise, and keep following up.

The New Agent's Launch Guide

Follow-upFrom your first list of 20 to your first ABC and first round of follow-up

Not becoming an expert first, but learning to spot needs, connect expertise, and follow through

Presented by Team Rise

Hello everyone, we're Team Rise. In the last two sessions we covered what this industry is and the different ways to work in it, then what the main insurance products each solve. Today isn't about products. It's about something more practical: if I start tomorrow, how do I begin?

What you'll get today is a standard routine you can start the same day: from writing your first list of 20 names, to setting up your first ABC meeting, to your first round of follow-up. By the end, everyone should know what to do first thing tomorrow morning.

Hold on to the last line on this cover: a new agent's job isn't to become an expert first, but to learn to spot needs, connect expertise, and follow through. At heart this is a sales job. We find out what a client needs, then find the right person and resources on our team and platform to solve it. The idea isn't specific to insurance; it's how you start in any new field. You begin as a beginner, and the first skill is connecting people with problems.

Pacing

Don't open with the compensation plan or income. This session is only about actions: who to list, how to open, how to bring in an Advisor, how to follow up.

One Line of Business, Start to Finish

Every contact has one goal: get the next step, not say everything at once

A question first: if you were opening a bubble tea shop tomorrow, who would you tell first?

Family, friends, the people closest to you. Nobody opens a shop, tells no one they know, and starts by pulling strangers in off the street. Our work is the same. At the start you tell the 20 people closest to you what you're doing now and what problems you can help with.

When someone comes to you then, it isn't for your expertise; they know you've just started. They come because they trust you as a person. Then you work out what kind of person they are, ask to meet, bring an Advisor into an ABC meeting for the expert questions, and follow up. Finally, sale or no sale, you ask for a referral, and with the right person you can talk about recruiting. That's the whole line, six steps.

Remember the line at the bottom: every contact has one goal, and that's the next step. The first chat aims for a meeting; the meeting aims for an ABC; the ABC aims for a second meeting. Don't try to say everything in one go.

Have the room answer "who would you tell first about your bubble tea shop" before showing this slide. The answer is almost always family and friends, which leads straight into the list of 20.

First, Get the Mindset Right

MINDSET

What stops new agents isn't product knowledge. It's not daring to speak up.

Don't fake expertise

Don't know? Write it down
AdvisorComplex? Bring in an Advisor
You own: relationship, information, execution, follow-up

You're not there to "sell"

First, is there a real problem?
Yes → help them get clear on it
No need → keep the relationship

Believe you're helping

Insurance, retirement, tax and legacy are complicated
Connecting a client to the right expertise is value in itself

The most professional thing a new agent can do: don't guess, and finish what you promise

The first thing many new agents say is: I want to learn it all first, then I'll feel ready to talk to clients. That's backwards. You aren't trying to become a technical expert; you're learning to find needs first. And without clients you can't actually learn, because real experience only comes from sitting with real people.

One: you don't need to fake expertise. People with many years in the business still meet questions they haven't seen, and they too need to think, or say "let me confirm and get back to you." That's normal. Write down what you don't know and check it with an expert or your mentor; that's the responsible way. Pretending to know and bluffing an answer is what's irresponsible. What you own is the relationship, the information, the execution and the follow-up.

Two: you're not there to "sell" something; you're there to help solve a problem. Some companies have one product, so every meeting ends in "this is the best product." We can work with the major carriers on the market, so the order runs the other way: find the client's need first, then the solution that fits it. If there's a real problem, help them get clear on it. If there's no need right now, keep the relationship.

Three: believe you're helping. Many people quietly worry: if I approach friends about this, am I making money off my friends? Look at it another way. If they need this anyway, who's more responsible: you, a friend who starts from their needs and brings in an expert, or a stranger who can sell only one product and insists it's the right one? You may not be an expert yet, but you're starting from their needs. Helping them avoid a mistake and get a plan in place is real value.

One more point: meeting a client without a sale is still a success. A client asks you something, you learn the answer while finding it, and the next client with the same question gets a better you. That's a gain in itself. Don't treat anything short of a commitment as failure.

Day One: List Just 20 People

20 LIST

Not 100. Twenty people you can actually talk to.

5

Most trusted

Family / friends / ex-colleagues

5

Clear duties

Married / kids / mortgage

5

Income or assets

Owners / high earners / investors

5

Influence or potential

Connected / curious / want a change

Rule: write the name first. Don't decide for them.

A hand writing a column of names in a notebook under an evening lamp

Day one has one task: list 20 people. Not 100; twenty people you can genuinely talk to. With a list that's too long, you'll keep tidying it and never call anyone.

Find five in each of four groups. First, the people who trust you most: family, close friends, old colleagues. Second, those with the clearest responsibilities: married, with kids, carrying a sizeable mortgage; they need protection most. Third, those with visible income or assets: business owners, high earners, investors; they tend to need more protection, or tax and retirement planning. Fourth, people with influence or career potential: well connected, keen to learn, looking for a side business or a change.

As I describe these, has a particular name already popped into your head? Then write it down.

There's only one rule: write the name first; don't decide for them. "He'd never buy," "she won't be interested": those are your guesses. Until you ask, you don't know. At the list stage you just write; judging comes in the next step.

HotCold / Warm / Hot = how close you are, not what they're worth. Warm today can be Hot later.

Once the list is written, don't rush to build an elaborate CRM. Give each name three labels: temperature, likely direction, next step. Let's walk through four examples.

Sister Wang eats lunch with you every day: Hot. You never knew retirement planning should really start around 40, and the earlier the better. Now that you've learned it, you think Sister Wang may need a retirement plan, though you have no idea whether she has one. So message her tonight: "I've just started learning with a platform. Could you come help me size it up, whether it's legitimate and right for me?" When she comes, you won't be alone; colleagues and an expert will be there, and the expert will walk through her retirement question with her.

David is Warm: not close, but you know each other, maybe in touch every six months. You know his career has stalled and his income has taken a hit. That's when people start thinking about a Plan B or a side business. His likely direction is Recruit; the next step is coffee on Friday to hear what he's thinking.

Mr. Li runs a small business and complains about his tax bill whenever you get together. You didn't know what could be done; now you know there are people on the team who design tax-efficient retirement plans for high-earning business owners. You don't know whether he has one, but you can mention it and invite him to a seminar on the topic. A seminar feels like less pressure than one-on-one, so he's more likely to come.

Amy is a puzzle; you don't even know what she's up to lately. So don't assign a direction; the next step is just to reconnect. As you talk, maybe a friend of hers recently fell ill and she's thinking about coverage, or her mother-in-law is getting older and long-term care is on her mind. Needs come out in conversation.

One last point: Cold, Warm and Hot describe how close you are, not what the person is worth. Someone Warm today can become Hot with steady contact.

SEGMENT

Listen first, then decide: Client, Recruit, or just a friendship for now

Retirement / tax / asset questions
Owner benefits / legacy questions

ABCNext: needs conversation → ABC

Recruit | They want a career opportunity

You hear:

Wants another source of income
Unhappy with the current career
Enjoys learning, talking, networking
Wants something long-term

Opportunity ABCNext: understand the motive → Opportunity ABC

Don't decide on the first chat whether you'll sell to them or recruit them. Understand what they need most right now.

Any one person on your list may have two paths.

One: they're a Client with a problem to solve. In conversation you'll hear things like family responsibilities and worries about protection; whether retirement savings are enough, taxes being too high, where to put assets; for business owners, employee benefits and passing the company on. When you hear these, the next step is a needs conversation, and an ABC once expert questions come up.

Two: they're looking for a career opportunity. Take a real estate agent: could working with us widen their network, deepen their knowledge, broaden what they offer clients? You'll hear that they want another income stream, are unhappy at work, enjoy learning and dealing with people, want to build something long-term. Then the next step is to understand their motive, and if they're interested, set up an Opportunity ABC where someone on the team explains the industry properly.

Some people have both paths, some only one. Don't label anyone on the first chat. It happens all the time: you think someone is a client, and after hearing you out they want to join; or you think someone wants a career, and it turns out what they need most is coverage. Understand what this person needs most right now.

6

Recruit 潜力Recruit potential

Wants change, keen to learn, gets things done

With 20 names written, who comes first? Not whoever has the most money, but whoever is close to you, has a clear problem, and has a next step.

One: people close to you. They'll listen and give honest feedback. Invite them as "I've just started learning, come help me judge this platform." You're not luring them in; you genuinely want their view. The seminars and classes are free, and if they're interested they can learn too.

Two: people at a life event. Many people only think about insurance when life reaches a turning point. A common story: with the first child you feel healthy and invincible; with the second, the pressure suddenly lands and you start wondering what happens if something happens to you. Marriage, a home, a business, a new job work the same way. One client of ours, 62, was laid off and frightened: he owned his home and had money in retirement accounts, but was it enough? Could the layoff simply become his retirement? That was what brought him to us. So if you know someone just laid off, besides the next job, you can prompt them to ask whether what they already have is enough to retire on.

Three: heavy responsibilities: a family, a mortgage, children, parents to care for. Four: visible taxes or assets: high income, business owners, investments, property. Banks lend to people with assets for the same reason: the more someone owns, the more there is to plan. Five: influential people who'll introduce you to others and are active in their communities. Six: recruit potential: people who want change, are keen to learn, and get things done.

Announce It: Let People Know How You Can Help

A post you can use as is

I've recently started studying family financial planning seriously, and I've joined a platform backed by Advisors and a professional team.

What I'm learning and working on now: family protection, retirement planning, retirement plans for business owners, and some basic tax and legacy planning.

I won't pretend to know everything. For the complicated questions, I'll work through them with the professionals on my team.

If you've been meaning to take another look at your policies or retirement accounts, or just want to know whether your plan has any obvious gaps, let's talk. I'm also building up real experience along the way.

Keep it honest, understated, and helpful. Don't inflate your credentials; don't promise results.

After the list, the second important task is the announcement. It isn't "I've started selling insurance." It's letting people know what you can help them with now.

The text on this slide can be used as is. The gist: I've started learning family financial planning and did a plan for myself; along the way I met a team, the classes are free, I've learned a lot and found it genuinely worthwhile. I'd like to share it, and anyone interested can learn about it with me.

It has to be sincere, not hype. We often find that when clients pull out policies bought five or ten years ago, most aren't enough. That doesn't mean the purchase was wrong; buying the policy was a good step. The question is whether it's enough and whether it can be improved, and that's what we can help review. So the post ends on "if you want to take another look at your policies or retirement accounts, let's talk."

Three words: honest, understated, helpful. Don't inflate your credentials; if you've just started, say so. Don't promise results, and don't put return figures in the post.

Two old friends catching up over coffee

When you open, do one thing: book the next step. Don't explain the product over text. New agents who get into product details in messages easily get them wrong; translation between Chinese and English creates ambiguity; and once you've explained everything, the other person has no reason to meet you.

Three versions, by relationship. With close friends, say plainly what you're doing, that a team backs you, and that you can do a basic review for them; ask when they have 20 to 30 minutes. A specific length of time tells them what to expect and takes the pressure off.

With people you haven't talked to in a while, say hello, then "you came to mind," and land on what's changed in their life: kids, business, house. You want to hear how they're planning for it. The emphasis is on listening, not presenting.

With business owners, say you've been doing a lot of owner retirement plans and family planning lately, "I'm not sure it's something you need," but their situation is worth a professional look. That "not sure" matters: it leaves the choice with them, so it doesn't sound like a pitch.

Another stance works well too: "I've just joined a platform and I'm learning; come help me size it up." Asking for their help puts the least pressure on them.

Once you're sitting down together, ask questions first and decide the direction afterwards. Your job is to find the clues, not to diagnose products on the spot.

Many people have never thought about the questions on this table, yet every one of them comes up in everyday conversation. "When do you want to retire and how much will you spend each month" comes up at dinner with friends all the time: where do you want to live when you retire? Someone says Japan, someone says Taiwan. Have you thought about what a month there costs? Perfectly normal conversation, and you're already talking retirement planning.

Legacy too. "Who gets the house one day?" Keep going: "Have you set up a trust? How long ago?" We often hear from clients that they did a trust fifteen years ago. Ask a little more: the younger child is eight, so they weren't even born when it was written; the house was bought a few years ago; has it been retitled into the trust? No. That's where planning begins.

"How's business this year?" A good year means a big tax bill. "How old are the kids? Where do they hope to go to school?" Tuition isn't cheap; any education savings yet? "What worries you down the road, long-term care or taxes?" Different concerns have different solutions. You don't need to answer on the spot. Write it down and take it into the ABC.

Trainer's note

When a client says "I already have insurance," don't dismiss it. Ask "When did you buy it?" What does a face amount bought twenty years ago cover today? Now in their sixties, have they thought about long-term care? Those are all reasons for a review.

TrainingABC: Two Kinds of Transfer, Plus Training

ABC

The client meets A because they trust B, and trusts the whole team because of A's expertise

Relationship & trust
Trust
Needs & decision
Expertise
Expertise & solution

Training: watch how A asks → take notes → debrief → next time B takes on a bit more

Here's a concept called ABC, which means working together. A is the Advisor, the expert; B is the Bridge, the new agent who knows the client, meaning you; C is the Client. B knows C, there's a relationship and trust between them, and B introduces C to A to plan together.

Every sale needs enough relationship and enough expertise. Expertise without relationship doesn't work. Relationship without expertise? It can work, but only for small favor policies: "You're my good friend, buy a policy from me," and they buy the cheapest one. Does the cheapest one have anything to do with their needs? We often see people buy a policy that way and discover later that it has problems. What we offer is both expertise and relationship.

So there are two transfers. The client agrees to meet A because they trust B: that's the transfer of trust. After meeting, A's expertise makes them trust the whole team more: that's the transfer of expertise.

And there's one kind of training. Every question A asks C, why A asks it, what answer comes back, how that shapes the next question: that's what B is there to learn. One day you'll do it yourself; how will you manage? You learn it one ABC at a time. Watch, take notes, debrief, and next time B takes on a bit more.

New agents sometimes ask: can I sit in on your client meetings? That doesn't work; your client would find it strange, and it's their private business. But if it's your client and you've brought in an expert to advise them, listening and learning alongside is perfectly fine. That's why you learn fastest with clients you bring yourself.

ABC?When Is It Time for ABC?

ABC

When you've heard a real problem, but shouldn't try to answer it yourself

Watch for these signs

The client asks "So what do I do?"
It needs numbers, comparison or judgment
Tax, legal or product detail is involved
A spouse or partner must be part of it

B says this

This isn't something I can explain properly in a couple of sentences. Let me bring in the Advisor on our team who specializes in this, and we'll look at your situation together."

下一步Next steps

Set a specific time
Tell the client what to bring
ABrief A before the meeting
Make sure the decision-maker attends

When should you move into an ABC? When you've heard a real problem, but it's one you shouldn't try to answer yourself.

There are four signs. The client asks "So what do I do?", meaning they accept the problem and want a solution. It needs calculation, comparison or professional judgment. It involves tax, legal or product detail. Or a spouse or business partner needs to be part of the discussion because one person can't decide. When you see these, don't push on alone.

Then B says the line in the middle: this isn't something I can explain properly in a couple of sentences; let me bring in the Advisor on our team who specializes in it, and we'll look at your situation together. "I'm not sure about some of this and I don't want to mislead you, so I'm bringing in a specialist" lands well with clients, because it sounds responsible.

Then four things: set a specific time; tell the client what to bring, such as existing policies and account statements; brief A on the client before the meeting; confirm the key decision-maker will attend.

The counterexample: a new agent says, "I've booked someone for you." "What's the situation?" "Not sure, they want to know about taxes." Taxes how? If it's a very general question, it may have nothing to do with what we do, and everyone's time is wasted. If it's a specific filing question, we don't do tax filing ourselves, and a CPA has to be booked. The meeting can still happen, but it'll go badly. Sometimes new agents are in a hurry to book someone and close fast; that's a problem too. Find out beforehand.

The 30-second brief for A: who they are → why they're coming → what they care about most → how far today should go

Preparation matters a great deal. B needs answers to six things; if you can't fill this in, you haven't really heard the client yet.

Basics: age, family, occupation, company. What they have: what insurance, what accounts, any property, roughly how much in assets. Trigger: why are they willing to meet now? What happened at home that makes them want to plan? Core problem: the one or two things the client most wants solved.

The decision-maker is the one new agents most often miss. In some households the wife doesn't decide, the husband does; she wants coverage, he says no, and no matter how well you explain it to her, nothing happens. Sometimes it's the other way round. We met one family whose baby was two months old. The wife booked the meeting about legacy planning, but the husband did all the talking. We laid out the whole picture objectively and suggested insurance for part of it, which can suit better than a trust alone. The face amount the assets called for felt like too much to him; he's conservative in investing and in business, and wanted to do half. Midway through, the wife couldn't hold back: do what they recommend, don't make us redo this every three years. In that moment the decision-maker flipped. So find out before the meeting who decides and what each of them thinks.

Meeting goal: is today about getting acquainted, gathering information, or moving to a plan? A handles each very differently.

Finally, give A a 30-second brief just before the meeting: who this is, why they're coming, what they care about most, how far today should go. A may see three to six clients a day; without your brief, A genuinely won't know who this is.

During the ABC: B Talks Less, but Isn't Idle

ABC

B's five jobs

Introductions, confirm the goal
Don't jump in or speak for the client
Numbers, exact words, goals, worries
Background facts only, not expertise
Next action, time and owner

What to watch: why does A ask this question at this moment? Which line from the client changed A's direction?

In a café, an experienced advisor talks with a couple while a new agent takes notes

During the meeting, the most important thing for B, the new agent, is to talk as little as possible. Some feel they need to show at some point that they know things too; that's a mistake. Talking less doesn't mean doing nothing. B has five jobs.

Open: handle introductions and confirm today's goal. Listen: don't jump in, don't speak for the client. Take notes: B isn't idle. Note the numbers, the client's exact words, their goals and worries. A isn't all-knowing either, and these get reviewed afterwards.

Fill in: B has known the client far longer than A. If something A says doesn't match the client's actual background, speak up, but only with background facts, never with expertise. Close: confirm the next action, "let's pick this up the same time next week, I'll set up the group chat," with time and owner both clear.

During training, watch for two things: why does A ask this question at this point? Which thing the client said made A turn in a different direction? That's what you're there to learn. That's the core of it, real experience.

One agent we've worked with a lot started out with A asking every question; he didn't know what to ask, and even when the client answered, he couldn't see how that answer changed the next question. After thirty-odd cases together, he now asks all the groundwork questions and A stays quiet; A only steps in when the client reveals the real need at some point. Bit by bit, a new agent learns to spot the moment the need surfaces.

Don't trust the magic numbers

80% of sales close on contact 5 to 12" isn't a reliable modern statistic.

What to train: don't vanish after one meeting without a sale.

Deals rarely close at the first meeting; it's a gradual process. Closing on the first meeting is uncommon, and we don't really recommend it. Insurance and planning are not simple, with a lot to weigh; a very quick close often means something wasn't explained. We want clients to understand and endorse the plan clearly.

A common pattern is three meetings: the first builds basic trust and uncovers the need; you go back and design a plan, present it the second time and reconfirm the need; the third time you walk through the revised plan and the details, and confirm.

The most common follow-up mistake is sending material and asking the next day "So, have you thought about it?" You rarely get an answer; most clients simply won't reply. Every contact needs a reason: material you promised, an answer to last time's question, a new case or new information, a fresh calculation, confirming the next step. Then they'll have something to say back. Even more so over the long term: ask about a plan you sent three months ago and they've long forgotten it; they won't reread it, so what would they reply? Say instead: we talked through a plan, something new has come up, or I recently worked on a case a lot like yours and I think a few things could be added or changed. Your chance of getting a meeting goes way up.

Train like this: make six to eight contacts that each add value. A clear no means stop. "Later" means writing down a specific date. No reply means slowing down and moving them to nurture, staying in touch over the long run.

You'll often see the claim that "80% of sales happen on the 5th to 12th follow-up." It isn't a reliable modern statistic; don't quote it. What you're really training is not disappearing after one meeting without a sale.

No reply isn't a no; the timing may just not be right. One client of ours set up a trust, then went back to China; the house sale and the policy for the child both stalled. About six months later he returned to the US and did the child's policy. Had he said no in between? No. There was nothing he could do from abroad, so why reply? When he's back, he may well reach out to you himself.

Six to Eight Follow-ups: What Each One Does

FOLLOW

This is a training rhythm, not a license to pester

Thank them, recap the key points
Send what you promised
Answer one specific question
Book the next step or second meeting
Bring a new angle of value
Go ahead, later, or pause?
Reach out when something relevant happens

If you don't know why you're contacting them next, don't. First find new value or a clear next step.

So what does each of those six to eight follow-ups do? This is a training rhythm, not a schedule for pestering clients.

Same day: a thank-you that recaps today's key points. Day 1–2: send the material you promised. Day 3–5: once they have it, ask whether anything was unclear or didn't answer their question, and answer one specific question. Day 7: book the next step or a second meeting. Day 14: bring a new angle of value, say a new case or a relevant piece of news. Day 21–30: confirm whether to go ahead, push it later, or pause. Ongoing: get in touch when something relevant happens.

The best example of long-term follow-up: a client who had just immigrated three years ago held a number of Hong Kong policies. We explained that as a US tax resident, those policies had to be reported to the US as financial assets and the premiums had US tax implications too, and asked whether he knew he needed a trust. He knew, but hadn't decided. For three years it was mostly holiday greetings. Then the team held a seminar on trusts and he came; about two weeks ago he called to say he wanted to set one up. What we told him three years ago is exactly what we tell him now. What changed was his mindset: the rules had shifted and now he felt the urgency.

One more thing: if a client may not want it, you can ask politely: "I don't want to keep chasing you; I just want to check whether you'd like to keep looking at this. If not, just tell me and I won't bother you for a while." It's okay to say this. Many people feel awkward, but it's normal; they don't owe you, and you don't owe them.

Most important is the line at the bottom: if you don't know why you'd contact them next, don't. Find new value or a clear next step first. You can also use AI tools to build a reminder system, letting the tool track how often to check in and with whom.

Referrals: Don't Wait for Clients to Think of Someone

GROW

Once the work is done, give them a specific reason to introduce someone

After a sale or service

If today was helpful, I've been doing similar reviews for friends lately. Is there anyone around you, one or two people, in a situation like yours? Not to buy anything, just to help them see their situation clearly."

Even without a sale

We may not end up doing anything today, but at least the questions are clear now. If someone you know is stuck on something similar, feel free to introduce me, and I'll help them find a direction."

Don't say "give me three names." Help the client think of who's in a situation like theirs.

Referrals matter enormously in this business. In any industry, the steady stream of good clients should come from referrals.

Don't wait for clients to think of someone; they won't. Give them a specific reason to introduce someone. After a sale or a service, use the left-hand line: if today helped, is there anyone around you in a similar situation? Not to buy anything, just to help them see their situation clearly.

You can ask even without a sale. If the client feels you helped them think things through, they still see you as valuable; they just can't decide right now. With the laid-off client from earlier, you could ask: are any of your colleagues also laid off and thinking about retirement? They have the same question, and we can help them take a look.

Don't say "give me three names." It puts the client under pressure and nobody comes to mind. Help them think of who's in a similar situation, and names come naturally.

Recruiting: Don't Lead With the Comp Plan or Income

RECRUIT

First, understand why they might want a new career option

现状Where they are

What do you like most about your current job, and what do you like least?"

目标Where they want to go

If your income or your time could change noticeably over the next three years, what would you most want to change?"

能力What they're good at

Do you prefer the technical side, working with people, or leading a team?"

意愿Willingness

If there were a path that needs a license and real study, would you want to look into it seriously?"

Client / Referral SourceInterested → Opportunity ABC. Not interested → don't push; they may still be a client or a referral source.

The most common recruiting mistake is opening with the compensation plan and income. If the other person doesn't yet know why they'd want a new direction, leading with numbers just makes it sound like you're pulling them in. So first work out why they might want a new career option.

Four questions, in order. Where they are: what they like most and least about their job. Where they want to go: if income or time could change noticeably in three years, what they'd change first. What they're good at: technical work, communicating, or leading a team. Willingness: if a path needed a license and real study, would they look into it seriously.

If they're interested, move to an Opportunity ABC where someone on the team explains the industry, licensing, training and how to actually start. If not, don't push; they may still be your client, or someone who refers clients to you.

Clients make excellent potential partners. One client in his fifties had already retired after planning his own retirement; the kids were in college, he had time, and he was keen to learn about this. You might say: I think you'd be good at this. You've sorted your own situation out so clearly; could you help people around you understand it too? He's already been through the whole process himself and compared the products, so he trusts them. He just hasn't been trained in how to explain it to others.

Trainer's note

No income figures and no "you could make X a year" in recruiting conversations. The comp plan and examples wait for the Opportunity ABC, presented by your upline in line with the Compliance Handbook; every amount is an illustration of the plan, not a promise of income.

WarmCold Market: The Goal Isn't a Sale, It's Getting Warm

COLD

The order with strangers: show up → interact → connect → talk → invite

Events, groups, content
Likes, comments, replies
Add on WeChat, swap contacts
Learn about them, no products
ABCABC only once there's a need

The biggest Cold Market mistake: making it obvious in your first sentence that you just want to sell something.

After a talk, guests mingle with coffee and exchange contacts

What's the Cold Market? Strangers. Say you go to an event, meet someone, add each other on WeChat. Then what?

With strangers the goal isn't an immediate sale; it's to become Warm first. Five steps: show up where people can see you, at events, in groups, through content; interact, liking, commenting on and replying to what they post; connect, adding each other and swapping contacts; talk, getting to know them without mentioning products; invite, moving to an ABC once a need comes up.

Seminars are a great way to invite: "We have a talk on trusts today, here's the link; I'll send you the next one on education too. Is this something you're interested in?" A seminar carries none of the pressure of a one-on-one, so you get to know each other naturally. A meal together afterwards brings people closer fast.

Cold Market

The biggest Cold Market mistake is making it plain in your first sentence that you just want to sell something. Send a product link right after connecting and you've basically lost them.

Some companies only post a glossy, staged life, and people just wonder how you're always on vacation. Letting people see you working hard is far more persuasive.

So what should a new agent post? You may not know yet. One new agent started an account called "Study Notes" and simply wrote down what he learned. He really was new and really didn't know much, but plenty of people liked and followed it, because most people don't know this stuff either. What suits a new agent best: what I'm learning, what problems I'm seeing, and the professional support behind me. Don't pretend to be an expert.

For the first 30 days, a new agent tracks just five actions each day. Build activity first; don't watch for sales every day.

Reach out to five people; do three follow-ups; make one real invitation; post once or engage once professionally; then spend ten minutes updating your list and reviewing: how many people you contacted, how many real conversations came of it, whether anyone is ready for an ABC with us, whether anyone gave a referral.

After five contacts, did you get muddled? Could you still book anyone? All of that goes into the review. This is hard on the nerves at first, but once you actually do it, it's not as hard as it looks, and you'll watch these numbers really grow. At this pace you can be up and running within a week; over 30 days, try to meet every one of the 20 people on your list. Once you're over that hump, it starts to feel easy.

The numbers can be adjusted to your team's reality. What matters is that every day has a new contact, a follow-up and a next step.

The Eight Most Common New-Agent Mistakes

CHECK

If you spot yourself doing one, fix it now

Waiting to learn every product before speaking up
Next ActionEnding a meeting with no next action
Too much product detail over text
Following up with only "have you thought about it?"
Deciding for clients that they won't buy
ReferralChasing clients, never asking for referrals
Talking over the Advisor in an ABC
Posting ads instead of building relationships

Finally, the eight mistakes new agents make most. If you see yourself doing one, change it now.

One: waiting until you've learned it all before speaking up. Here's the paradox: without clients, you can't learn. This isn't book knowledge; it's field experience and people skills, and you only learn them face to face.

Two: ending a meeting without booking the next one, and then nothing happens for ages. Always book at the end: what's next? Reviewing the report together same time next week, or coming to next week's seminar?

Three: product detail over text. A new agent may get it wrong, and Chinese–English translation can create ambiguity. Four: following up with only "have you thought about it?" Nobody ever answers that.

Five: deciding for the client that they won't buy. They just haven't bought yet. Six: chasing clients and never asking for referrals. That's a real problem; a steady flow of clients is supposed to come from referrals.

Seven: talking over the Advisor in an ABC. The B role is genuinely hard, and done well it raises the success rate a lot. We saw one case where a client was sold on one type of policy and had the check ready to sign; B chimed in that another type the client already owned was bad, "only a fool buys that." The client walked out on the spot. Don't knock what the client already has, and don't make the decision for them. A related trap: rushing to go solo and not wanting to split with a mentor, then, short on experience, ending up with a small policy where a larger, better-fitting one was possible, which costs everyone more.

Eight: posting ads instead of building relationships. Doing nothing but social media and never visiting clients is far too slow. Adding value by message, by email, or face to face: which builds the relationship most? Meeting in person, of course.

Script | Introducing A: A Formula to Learn

SCRIPT

The need → why A fits → why A is here → B's role

Last time you told me what you most want to solve right now is . So today I've asked from our team to join us. Their main focus is , and they've worked with plenty of families and businesses in situations like yours. I'm mostly here to listen and note down the questions and next steps for you; for the technical parts, we'll let them break it down."

Don't introduce A like this

"This is my teacher, they're amazing."
"I don't know anything, so they'll explain it."

A30 seconds for A beforehand

Client is 48, a business owner, mainly worried about taxes and retirement; his wife is joining. Today is about understanding the situation, no rush on products."

Introducing A matters. Here's a fixed formula with four parts: the client's need, why A fits it, why you asked A to come, and your own role as B.

For example: "Last time you told me what you most want to solve is cash flow and taxes after retirement. So today I've asked so-and-so from our team to join us. Their main focus is retirement and family financial planning, and they've worked with many families in situations like yours. I'm mostly here to listen and note the questions and next steps for you; for the technical side, we'll let them break it down."

Make A's expertise and experience clear, so the client knows this person can solve their problem. People on the team have different strengths: some in tax, some in health insurance, some in retirement, trusts or investments. You choose based on the client's situation, not always the same person.

Don't introduce A as "my teacher, they're amazing." Amazing at what? The client has no idea. And don't say "I don't know anything, so they'll explain it"; that tells the client you're useless here. "There are things I'm not sure of and I don't want to mislead you, so I've brought in an expert" is responsible; "I don't know anything" is passing the buck.

Thirty seconds before the introduction, brief A on the side: client is 48, a business owner, mainly worried about taxes and retirement, his wife is coming, and today is about understanding the situation, no rush on products.

Script | What B Says in the Meeting: Four Moments Only

SCRIPT

Talking less doesn't mean saying nothing

开场Opening

Today we mainly want to get clear on the two things you raised last time: first , and second . Right?"

补背景Adding background

One bit of background: the company he mentioned only started having employees last year, which may matter for the planning."

The client looks lost

Let me check: was that last part not quite clear? Shall we ask to explain it more simply?"

Wrapping up

No need to decide anything today. Next, we'll need from you, and we'll take care of . Can we spend 20 minutes on to go over the results?"

B's most important line usually isn't about the product. It's making the next step specific.

B talks little in an ABC, but little isn't nothing. B speaks at four moments only.

Opening: name the two questions today will tackle and let the client confirm, "right?" That line also tells A what today is for.

Adding background: A has only just met the client; B knows more of the history. The client says "my company," and B knows it only started hiring last year, which may directly affect the plan. That's when B adds a line. Facts only, no expertise.

When the client looks lost: you can tell they've fallen behind but feel awkward asking. B checks on their behalf and asks A to explain it more simply.

Wrapping up: no decision needed today; what we need from the client next, what we'll handle, which day we'll spend 20 minutes on the results. Name a definite time and everyone knows what to expect. Say only "let's find time next week" and the client doesn't know what about or for how long; that feels like pressure, and they won't want to meet.

So B's most important line is usually not a product script. It's making the next step specific.

Script | Referral + Recruit: Opening the Last Step

Don't jump from a client conversation to "want to join us?"

Referral

If today helped, is there anyone around you, one or two people, in a situation like yours? They don't need to buy anything. A lot of people just never had anyone help them look at all of this together. You could start a group chat with us and I'll say hello."

Recruit|先试探Recruit | Test the water

你有没有想过未来除了现在的工作,再建立一个跟专业能力、人脉有关的事业?」"I think you'd actually be good at this kind of work: people like you, and you enjoy learning. Have you ever thought about building something beyond your current job, around expertise and relationships?"

Recruit | Once they're curious

你先跟我说说,你如果真的考虑一个新方向,最看重的是收入、时间、成长,还是未来能不能做成自己的事业?」"I won't bury you in the comp plan. Tell me first: if you really considered a new direction, what would matter most to you: income, time, growth, or building something of your own?"

Opportunity ABCThen the Opportunity ABC

Got it. Then I think it's worth a proper look. I'll set up time with from our team to walk you through the industry, licensing, training and how people actually start. You can decide afterwards whether it fits."

The last slide is the last step: how to open Referral and Recruit. One principle: don't lurch from a client conversation into "do you want to join us?"

The Referral line is the same as before, plus "a lot of people just never had anyone help them look at all of this together," and one very light action: start a group chat so I can say hello.

Recruit takes two steps. First test the water: name what you've noticed, that people like them and they enjoy learning, and ask whether they've considered building something beyond their job around expertise and relationships. If they're curious, still hold back on the comp plan; ask what matters most: income, time, growth, or building something of their own. Their answer decides what the Opportunity ABC covers.

Then the Opportunity ABC: book someone from the team to explain the industry, licensing, training and how people actually begin, and let them decide afterwards whether it fits. Getting licensed isn't the hard decision; the real question is whether this work suits them and whether they can do it.

Homework

Tonight, write your list of 20 with three labels for each name, and post your announcement. Bring the list to the next session and we'll practise booking each one.

What this session covers

One session of the licensing class. Earlier sessions covered how the industry works and the main product types; this one covers how to get the business started. One line, six steps: a list of 20 → read the person → open / announce → ABC → follow-up → referral / recruit. Names are examples and cases are anonymized.

1. Get the mindset right

What stops new agents isn't product knowledge; it's not daring to speak up. Many want to "learn it all first, then talk to clients." That's backwards: without clients you can't learn, because real experience comes from real contact. At heart this is a sales job: find the need, then find the right person and resources on the team and platform to solve it.

The most professional thing a new agent can do: don't guess, and finish what you promise.

2. Day one: list just 20 people

Open a bubble tea shop and you tell family and friends first; this work is the same. Not 100 names: list 20 people you can actually talk to, five in each of four groups:

5 个Five who例子For example
Family / close friends / old colleagues
Married / kids / mortgage
Have visible income or assets企业主 / 高收入 / 有投资(保障、省税、退休需求更大)Business owners / high earners / investors (bigger protection, tax and retirement needs)
Have influence or career potential人脉广 / 爱学习 / 想副业或转型Well connected / keen to learn / want a side business or change

One rule: write the name first. Don't decide for anyone that they won't buy or won't care.

Three labels are enough

No elaborate CRM. Give each name three labels: temperature (Cold / Warm / Hot), likely direction (which client need / recruit / unknown) and next step (message tonight, coffee Friday, send an event invite, reconnect first). Warm means not close, but you know each other, maybe in touch every six months. Temperature isn't value; Warm today can become Hot with steady contact.

3. The same person, two possible paths

Listen first, then decide: Client, Recruit, or just a friendship for now.

Some people have both paths, some one. Don't label anyone on the first chat: often someone you took for a client wants to join once they've heard you out.

Who to approach first

Not who has the most money, but who is close, has a clear problem, and has a next step:

  2. Close to you: they'll listen and give feedback. Ask them to help you judge the platform; seminars and classes are free, and they can learn too.
  4. Life events: marriage, a baby, a home, a business, a new job, retirement. Many people only think "what if something happens to me" after a second child; a client laid off at 62 came asking whether what he had was enough to retire on now.
  6. Heavy responsibilities: family, mortgage, children, parents.
  8. Visible taxes or assets: high income, business owners, investments, property. More assets, more to plan.
  10. Influential: happy to introduce people, active in communities.
  11. Recruit
  12. Recruit potential: wants change, keen to learn, gets things done.

4. Announcing and opening

The announcement isn't "I've started selling insurance"; it tells people how you can help now. The text on slide 8 can be used as is: you're seriously studying family financial planning and have joined a platform backed by Advisors and a professional team; you're learning protection, retirement planning, owner retirement plans, and basic tax and legacy planning; you won't pretend to know everything and will work through complex questions with professionals; anyone who wants another look at their policies or retirement accounts is welcome to talk.

Be sincere, no hype. Policies bought five or ten years ago are often not enough; the purchase wasn't wrong, but whether it's enough and can be improved is something we can review. Three words: honest, understated, helpful. Don't inflate credentials, don't promise results, don't post return figures.

Warm Market

In the Warm Market, opening has one job: book the next step. Don't explain the product over text. Three versions:

5. Talking with clients: ask first, then decide

You find the clues; you don't diagnose products on the spot. These questions all come up naturally in everyday conversation:

Where it may lead
If you couldn't work for six months, what happens to household cash flow?寿险 / DI / Living BenefitsLife / DI / Living Benefits
When do you want to retire, and how much a month will you spend?
Which bothers you more: high taxes, or not knowing where to put money? Tax planning / Roth / business retirement plans
If you need long-term care, where should the money come from?LTC / Hybrid / 资产安排LTC / hybrid / asset planning
Leaving assets to the kids: taxes, process or control, which worries you most?Estate / Trust / Life Insurance
What does the company most need: keeping people, taxes, or the owner's retirement?401(k) / CB-DB / Executive Benefits

Examples: talk of where to live in retirement (Japan, Taiwan) leads to how much a month costs there; talk of who gets the house leads to whether there's a trust and how old it is. A common find: a trust from fifteen years ago that leaves out a child born since, and a house bought a few years ago never retitled into it. That's a planning opening. When a client says "I already have insurance," don't dismiss it; ask when they bought it. Is a face amount from twenty years ago enough today? In their sixties, have they considered long-term care?

6. ABC: before, during and after

A 是 Advisor(专业人士),B 是 Bridge(桥梁,最开始认识客户的新人),C 是 Client(客户)。

A is the Advisor (the expert), B is the Bridge (the new agent who knows the client), C is the Client. Every sale needs enough relationship and enough expertise: relationship without expertise only produces the cheapest favor policy, which may not fit the need, and problems surface later. An ABC carries two transfers: the client meets A because they trust B (trust), and trusts the whole team because of A's expertise (expertise). And one kind of training: watch how A asks → take notes → debrief → next time B takes on a bit more. New agents can't sit in on other people's clients (that's their privacy), but listening and learning when your own client has brought in an expert is fine, which is why you learn fastest with clients you bring. For the team's field training and split rules, see Field Training & Splits.

When to move into an ABC

When you've heard a real problem you shouldn't try to answer yourself. Signs: the client asks "so what do I do?"; it needs calculation, comparison or judgment; tax, legal or product detail is involved; a spouse or partner needs to be part of it. Then B says: "This isn't something I can explain properly in a couple of sentences. Let me bring in the Advisor on our team who specializes in this, and we'll look at your situation together." Then set a specific time, tell the client what to bring, brief A, and confirm the decision-maker will attend.

The counterexample: "I've booked someone who wants to know about taxes." What about taxes? A general question may have nothing to do with our work; a specific filing question isn't something we handle, so a CPA must be booked. The meeting can happen, but it'll go badly.

Before: six things B must prepare

  2. Basics: age / family / job / company
  4. What they have: insurance / accounts / property / rough assets
  6. Trigger: why meet now? What happened?
  8. Core problem: which one or two things the client most wants solved
  10. Decision-maker: does a spouse or partner need to be there?
  12. Meeting goal: get acquainted, gather information, or move to a plan?

If you can't fill this in, you haven't heard the client yet. The decision-maker is the easiest to miss. In one family the wife booked a legacy-planning meeting, yet the husband did all the talking; he found the face amount the assets called for too high and wanted half. Midway, the wife said "do what they recommend, don't make us redo this every three years," and the decision-maker flipped on the spot. Give A a 30-second brief beforehand: who they are → why they're coming → what they care about most → how far today should go. A may see three to six clients a day; without your brief, A won't know who this is.

During: B talks less, but isn't idle

B's five jobs: open (introductions, confirm the goal), listen (don't jump in or speak for the client), take notes (numbers, exact words, goals, worries), fill in (background facts only, not expertise), close (confirm the next action, time and owner). In training, watch why A asks a given question at that moment, and which line from the client changed A's direction. One agent we work with often started with A asking everything; after thirty-odd cases together, he asks all the groundwork questions and A steps in only when the client reveals the real need.

The formula for introducing A

The need → why A fits → why A is here → B's role: "Last time you told me what you most want to solve is ____. So today I've asked ____ from our team to join us. Their main focus is ____, and they've worked with plenty of families and businesses like yours. I'm mostly here to listen and note the questions and next steps for you; for the technical parts, we'll let them break it down." Choose A to suit the client: some on the team are stronger in tax, others in health insurance, retirement, trusts or investments. Don't say "this is my teacher, they're amazing" (amazing at what?) or "I don't know anything, they'll explain" (that says you're useless).

B speaks at four moments in the meeting

B's most important line usually isn't about the product; it's making the next step specific. Afterwards, debrief with A: the client's needs, the key questions and answers, the plan for next steps.

7. Follow-up: deals rarely close at the first meeting

Usually three meetings: the first builds trust and uncovers the need; the second presents the plan and reconfirms the need; the third walks through the revised plan and details and confirms. Closing on the first meeting is uncommon and not recommended; a very fast close often means something wasn't explained.

What
Thank them, recap the key points
Send what you promised
Answer one specific question
Book the next step or second meeting
Bring a new angle of value
Go ahead, later, or pause
Reach out when something relevant happens

No reply isn't a no; the timing may be off. One client went back to China after setting up a trust and did his child's policy six months later, on his return. Another knew on arrival that his Hong Kong policies called for a trust but "hadn't decided"; for three years it was holiday greetings, until the rules shifted, he came to a trust seminar, and he called us. What we said three years earlier was exactly what we said then; his mindset had changed. You can also ask politely and directly: "Do you want to keep looking at this? If not, just say so and I won't bother you for a while." If you don't know why you'd contact someone next, don't; and you can use AI tools to build a reminder system.

八、Referral 与 Recruit8. Referrals and recruiting

Referrals: ask whether or not there's a sale, and don't wait for clients to think of someone. Give a specific reason: "If today was helpful, is there anyone around you in a situation like yours? Not to buy anything, just to help them see things clearly." Without a sale: "We may not end up doing anything today, but at least things are clear. If someone you know is stuck on something similar, feel free to introduce me." Don't say "give me three names"; help the client think of who's in a similar spot, like a laid-off client's colleagues.

Recruiting: don't lead with the comp plan or income; first understand why they might want a new career option. Four questions: where they are (what they like most and least at work), where they want to go (what they'd change in three years), what they're good at (technical work, people, leading a team), and willingness (would they look seriously at a path that needs a license and study). Interested → Opportunity ABC; not interested → don't push, they may still be a client or referral source. Clients who have been through the planning process themselves and believe in it often make the best potential partners: they've compared products and built trust, and only lack training in explaining it.

Don't switch abruptly from a client conversation to recruiting. Test the water first ("people like you and you enjoy learning; have you thought about building something around expertise and relationships?"); once they're curious, ask what matters most, income, time, growth or their own business, then book someone from the team to explain the industry, licensing, training and how people start. The full process is in Recruiting.

9. The Cold Market and your feed

With strangers, the goal isn't an immediate sale but getting warm: show up (events, groups, content) → interact (likes, comments, replies) → connect (add on WeChat, swap contacts) → talk (learn about them, no products) → invite (ABC once there's a need). Seminars are a great invitation with no one-on-one pressure, and a meal afterwards brings people closer. The biggest mistake is making it plain in your first sentence that you just want to sell.

Your feed keeps people aware of what you do and lets trust build slowly. A suggested mix: 40% expertise (what you've learned, common mistakes, how a case was approached), 25% work (training and ABCs, the team and events, your learning), 25% personal (family and hobbies, real life, values), 10% action (seminars and reviews, open for booking, a clear call to action). Don't post a staged life; let people see you working. New agents should post what they're learning, what problems they see and the expertise behind them, like a "Study Notes" account, rather than posing as experts. Check the Compliance Handbook before posting anything about products.

10. The first 30 days: five daily actions

For the first 30 days, build activity rather than watching for sales: 5 outreach contacts, 3 follow-ups, 1 real invitation, 1 post or professional interaction, and 10 minutes of CRM and review (how many contacted, how many real conversations, anyone ready for an ABC, any referrals). Adjust the numbers to your team; what matters is a new contact, a follow-up and a next step every day. Aim to meet all 20 people within 30 days; once you're past that, it gets much easier.

11. The eight most common mistakes

  2. Waiting to learn every product before speaking up: without clients you can't learn; this is field experience, not book knowledge.
  4. No next action at the end of a meeting: without the next booking, nothing happens.
  6. Too much product detail over text: easy to get wrong, and Chinese–English translation adds ambiguity.
  8. Following up with only "have you thought about it?": almost nobody answers.
  10. Deciding for clients that they won't buy: they just haven't bought yet.
  12. Chasing clients, never asking for referrals: a steady flow of clients should come from referrals.
  14. Talking over the Advisor in an ABC: and above all, don't knock what the client already owns or decide for them. One client with a check ready to sign walked out when B chimed in that a type of policy he'd bought before was bad. Rushing to go solo instead of working with a mentor can also shrink a better-fitting plan through inexperience.
  16. Posting ads instead of building relationships: of messages, email and meeting in person, meeting builds the relationship most.
Homework

Write your list of 20 with temperature, likely direction and next step for each name, and post your announcement. Bring the list to the next session to practise booking.
