Five Sales Questions

The five questions partners ask most: the client likes me but won't sign; I did everything and they still didn't buy; the second policy won't move; how do people trust you before they've met you; why do some clients send you their friends. Underneath, all five are one idea: no trust, no sale.

Five Sales Questions

The five sales questions partners ask most

No trust, no sale

Presented by Team Rise

Hello everyone, we're Team Rise. Today covers five questions, the ones partners ask us most: the client loves me but won't sign; I did everything and they still didn't buy; the first policy closed but the second won't move; why some clients trust me before we've even met while others still don't after three meetings; and why some clients send me their friends without being asked.

They sound like five different problems, but by the end you'll see they're one, the line on this cover: no trust, no sale. However clearly you explain the product and however many gifts you send, if the client's trust isn't there, the policy doesn't happen.

Pacing

Open by asking, "Which of these five have you run into lately?" Take a show of hands; when you reach that question, invite someone to describe their own case.

Five Questions, One Thread

MAP
Two accounts
2尽力还不买Tried, still no两个温度Two temperatures
The trust account
Social media
Beating expectations

Behind all five is one idea: selling is trust

Here are the five, in the order a sale actually unfolds.

Question one, liked but not signed, is about two accounts: relationship and commitment. Question two, you tried everything and they still didn't buy, is about two temperatures: the client's attitude toward insurance plus your own. Question three, the first policy closed but the second won't, is about the trust account: every sale spends trust.

Question four steps back in time: how clients come to trust you before they meet you, which is about social media. Question five steps forward: after the sale, how clients come to volunteer their friends, which is about an experience that beats expectations.

Five questions, one thread: selling is trust. Each time we're asking the same thing: where does the client's trust in you stand right now, and how do you top it up?

1. Liking Isn't Trusting: Two Accounts

ACCOUNTS

RelationshipRelationship account

Dinners, mooncakes at Mid-Autumn
A like on every post
You're right" through the whole pitch
Once full: they like you as a person

CommitmentCommitment account

They believe in what you do
They'll trust you with their money and family
They're ready to make a decision
This is the account a policy is paid from

They like you, but they don't trust you with this. Stop depositing in the relationship account.

Question one, and the one we hear most: "My client really likes me. They like every post, and when I explain the product they keep saying 'you're right.' But they won't sign. Did I explain the product badly?"

It isn't the product. A sale draws on two accounts. On the left is the relationship account: the dinners, the two boxes of mooncakes at Mid-Autumn, the chats and likes all go in here. Past a point, they like you as a person.

On the right is the commitment account: whether they believe in what you do, whether they'll hand you their money and their family's protection, whether they're ready to decide. A policy is paid from this account on the right, not the one on the left.

What many of us do: I've chased this one twice, so let me send another gift. But the relationship account is already full; more deposits change nothing. Plainly, they like you as a person, but that doesn't mean they'll do this with you. Time to switch accounts and start depositing in commitment. How? Next slide.

Interaction

Ask, "Anyone had a client who really likes you but won't sign?" Plenty of hands go up. Then: "What did you do next?" Usually it's another product walkthrough or another gift, which sets up the two accounts.

Hear the Doubt, Bring Someone In

COMMITMENT
1

Listen: what's behind the question

They understood fine; they don't believe you

2

Pause: don't rush the answer

Right now nothing you say will land

3

Borrow: bring in more weight

A CFT or manager joins and says the same thing again

A partner and a couple at a living-room table, leaning in to a phone call on speaker

So how do you deposit in the commitment account? Put simply: sometimes when a client asks a question, you can feel it at once. They didn't misunderstand; they don't believe you.

Once you feel that, step two is to pause: stop rushing to answer the question itself. In that moment nothing you say will land, and the more and faster you talk, the more it sounds like a sales pitch.

Step three is to borrow: bring in a CFT with more weight than you, or your manager, as soon as you can. In person, or, as in the photo, a call right there at the table. When someone else says the same thing, the client's commitment account gets a deposit. We call this leverage; how to set it up and what to brief beforehand is in Field Training, under the ABC triangle.

Presenter note

Stress "the earlier the better": bring the CFT in at the start, not after three months of chasing once the relationship account is already full.

Two Real Cases

CASES

Just short of closing"

The numbers worked, dinner happened, still no signature. The manager spent under half an hour on the phone, and it closed.

Does the guaranteed column lapse?"

Not a hard question, and the partner answered it. What was missing wasn't the answer; it was trust in that moment.

The skill is sensitivity: knowing when to stop building rapport and bring in leverage

Two real cases.

First: a partner had everything settled with a client. The numbers were fine, dinner had happened, and it was just short of closing. The partner asked a manager for help; one call, under half an hour, and it closed. Why? The client had heard plenty from the partner. What they needed was one more person adding a little more.

Second: a manager told us their client had asked, "If you go by the guaranteed column, does my policy lapse?" A simple question. The guaranteed column assumes the minimum rate, so yes, it can lapse late on, but actual credits won't sit at the minimum forever. That's what the partner said. The answer wasn't the problem; in that moment the client didn't trust the partner enough, and needed someone else to say the same thing.

So the skill here is sensitivity. Some of us miss the moment and keep buying dinners and gifts when it's time for leverage, and the sale still doesn't close. When the client asks that one question, you need to feel that it's no longer about the question itself.

Presenter note

How to explain the guaranteed column is covered in Index Strategies. Here it only illustrates "the question is easy; trust is what's missing." Don't turn this slide into a product lesson.

2. Their Temperature and Yours

TEMPERATURE

The client's view of insurance

Already sees why it matters
Knows it's important
Neutral, indifferent
Slightly resistant
Thinks it's a scam
Hostile to the whole industry

Your own temperature

Product knowledge + sales skill

1°C刚入行的新人A brand-new agent 3°C经理A manager 5–6°C慢慢练上来Built up over time

Question two: "I really gave it everything. Two-hour meetings, I sent the numbers, I've followed up for three months, and they still won't buy." Whenever someone tells us "I've been chasing this one for three months, five months," this is the reason.

A sale has two variables. The first is the client's temperature: every client has one toward insurance. Already sees why it matters, +3. Knows it's important, +1. Indifferent, 0. A bit resistant, −1. Opens with "insurance is all a scam," that's −3. Hostile to the whole industry, −6.

The second is your own temperature, how many degrees your selling is worth. It's made of two things: product knowledge and sales skill. A brand-new agent might be 1 degree, a manager 3, and with practice it climbs to 5 or 6.

Note that this temperature is the client's attitude toward insurance, not the "relationship temperature" from Breaking the Ice, which is about how well you know each other. A close friend can easily be −3 on insurance.

3°CThe Closing Line Is +3°C

TEMPERATURE

3°CClient + you ≥ +3°C

No sale
Client −3, you 3: you only reach neutral
成交Sale
Client −3, you 6: you reach the line
成交Sale
Someone else, or time, already warmed them to −1; you don't need to do much

Before each meeting: how warm are they, how warm am I? If it's not enough, borrow someone warmer.

Add the two temperatures together, and they need to clear a line. We call it the closing line: +3.

Do the sums. The client is −3, you're 3: −3 plus 3 is 0, neutral, and there's no sale. However hard you try or however long you chase, you're circling zero. Put the same −3 client in front of someone at 6: −3 plus 6 is +3, and it closes.

The third row is a different case: the client started out negative but someone else, or time, has already warmed them to −1. Now you only need 4: −1 plus 4 reaches +3. The handbag story on the next slide is this row.

So before each meeting, answer two things: how warm is this client, and how warm am I? If the client is −3 or −6 and you know you're not that warm yet, accept it: I can't close this one on my own right now. Then what? Exactly what question one said: bring in someone warmer.

Interaction

Ask everyone to rate themselves: "What temperature are you right now?" Then: "And the client you've chased longest, what are they?" Add the two, and many people see at once why it isn't closing.

The Handbag Story: Time Warms Clients Too

STORY
First visit: a long pitch, too pricey, "I'll think about it" −3°C种草:回家连刷四天小红书Scrolling: four days of reviews at home −1°C再进店:碰到另一位店员Back again: a different salesperson +3°C刷卡:包拿出来,当场买下Sold: the bag comes out; they pay on the spot

The first salesperson and those four days did the real work

A leather handbag on a glass shelf in a softly lit boutique

An everyday example that makes this click.

You go to look at a designer bag. The salesperson is warm and walks you through everything. Then you see the price: too much. "Let me think about it." Right now you're at −6 on that bag. At home you start scrolling reviews, four days straight: −5, −4, −3, and now you really want it. You're at −1.

You go back and get a different salesperson. They barely do anything; they bring the bag out and you pay right there, feeling generous and decisive. But the real work was done by the first salesperson and those four days of scrolling. They took you from −6 to −1.

Two lessons. First, time and outside information warm a client up too; no sale today doesn't mean wasted effort. Second, if you're the first salesperson, don't lose heart; if you're the second, don't think it was all you. Next: what to actually do with a −6 client.

A −6°C Client: Don't Grind

ENERGY
1

Set them aside; let time work

6 today isn't −6 in six months

2

Don't try to change people

You can't change your own spouse's mind; you won't change a stranger's

3

Protect your energy

Thirty minutes in and it isn't happening? Close politely: "I won't take more of your time today. Let's find another time."

Grinding wastes the most time; energy is what sells

Someone with a laptop bag walking out of a café into afternoon sun

When you meet a deeply negative client, someone who resents insurance and thinks it's a scam, remember: don't try to change people. You can't even change your own spouse's mind; how will you change a client's? Grinding on a client wastes more time than anything.

Set them aside. −6 today doesn't mean −6 six months from now. As with the handbag, time and outside information will warm them for you.

One more, to protect yourself. A negative client drags down your confidence and energy. It happens: three appointments in a day, the first one in the morning is relentlessly negative, ninety minutes later you're drained, and the two afternoon appointments don't happen. Most of us have been there.

So learn this move: even if you booked two hours, if fifteen or thirty minutes in you can tell it isn't happening today and the client is just too negative, don't sit through the full two hours. Many of us are too polite and feel leaving early is rude. It isn't. Close courteously, "I won't take up more of your time today; let's find another time," pick up your bag and go. Stay the two hours and your face changes, your energy is gone, and your afternoon goes with it. In sales, energy is everything.

3. Every Sale Spends Trust

TRUST

Like a credit pull on a home loan: each one knocks the score down, and it takes time to rebuild

No new source of trust

Before policy one: a high balance
A big decision spends the trust
The balance falls below the line
Overdrawn: no second decision

A new source of trust

A manager or senior advisor
A third-party expert
A referral or client story
A new voice refills the balance

Question three came from a manager, and it's a great one: "The client already bought a million with me and I want to place a second policy. The wife is covered, the husband isn't, and I'm one case short of a trip or a promotion. But they won't buy again, or they bought the second one from someone else. I don't get it."

Always remember: selling is trust, and without trust there's no sale. A client buys from you because they hold a balance of trust in you. But every sale draws that balance down.

Anyone who's bought a home here knows: the lender pulls your credit, the score drops a little, and it takes time to bring it back. Clients work the same way. Before the first policy their trust is high; a big decision spends it; once the balance drops below the closing line, the second policy won't move. That's an overdraft.

The right-hand side is the fix: bring in a new source of trust. A manager, a senior advisor, a third-party expert, or another client's introduction or story. A new voice and a new angle bring the trust back, and only then does the second policy get easier.

It Isn't the Product. It's Trust.

TRUST
1

Borrow someone's trust

A CFT or manager is a fresh balance to the client: you're borrowing their credit line

2

Rebuild it yourself

Possible, but slow: a score that's been pulled doesn't bounce back overnight

The knowledge account can always be topped up; an overdrawn trust account needs a new source

So when a client has already placed a sizable policy with you and the second one won't move, it isn't that your product is weak. The usual reflex is: I didn't explain it well, let me go through it again, do another one-on-one. It won't help. This isn't the moment for product; it's the moment for trust.

Two ways out. First, borrow someone else's trust. The client's trust in you is spent, so can you bring in a CFT? To the client that's a brand-new balance; you're borrowing that person's credit line, and the sale has a chance.

Second, no CFT available and you'll do it yourself? That works too, but it takes time; it's called building trust. Once a credit score has been pulled, it doesn't recover the next day; you rebuild it gradually.

Remember the line at the bottom: the knowledge account can always be topped up; once the trust account is overdrawn, it needs a new source. You can keep learning product forever, but trust doesn't come back just by explaining things again.

4. Clients Decide Before They Meet You

PRE-TRUST

Followed a local real-estate influencer? You've never met her, yet you feel you know her

Before you meet: they already know who you are, what you do and how you live
When you meet: you skip "who I am, how long I've been here, how qualified I am"
The result: faster recruiting and faster sales
A phone on a desk showing a grid of blurred photo thumbnails, with coffee and a notebook

Question four: why do clients decide whether to trust you before you even meet? It's true for recruiting and for sales, and most obvious in recruiting, which is often decided in a single meeting.

A question for the room: on YouTube, RedNote or Douyin, have you followed a local real-estate influencer? Call out a few names. Right. You've never met her, yet you know who she is, what she does and how she lives. How did you get to know her? Through social media.

Our business works the same way. We all want recruiting to go faster, signing someone in half an hour, and sales to go faster too. The way to get there is for people to know you before they meet you. Then you don't start from scratch: who I am, how long I've been in the U.S., how I'm doing in this industry, how qualified I am, my team, my office. They've already seen it all on your social media.

Interaction

Ask partners to name one or two local influencers, then: "Have you met them in person? So why do you feel you know them?" The answer leads straight to social media.

The Social Media Trio

SOCIAL

WeChat: three basics

Photo, cover image, signature
The cover is your biggest billboard
A collage with text fits the most

视频号WeChat Channels

A video may take two or three hours
It works while you rest and sleep

No longer optional
Post → wait for DMs
Add on WeChat → meet

Facebook、InstagramThat's the trio for the Chinese-speaking market; for English speakers, Facebook and Instagram

What exactly? For the Chinese-speaking market, there's a basic trio.

One, WeChat, the baseline everyone must do. It has three basics: profile photo, cover image and signature line. The photo should look professional, and that one signature line matters. The cover image is your biggest billboard; make it a collage with text so it carries more information.

Two, WeChat Channels. A single video might take you two or three hours, but every video keeps working for you while you rest and sleep.

Three, RedNote. Who isn't on it now? You have to be. The flow is simple: post, wait for DMs; when someone messages, add them on WeChat; once you're connected, meet. RedNote is the platform that draws people in.

The English-speaking market is the same with Facebook and Instagram. One goal: before someone has met you, they already know who you are.

What to Post, and Compliance First

SOCIAL

发什么What to post

A private office? Show it
At Wednesday training, snap a photo so people see you're still learning
Everyone wants to learn from someone who's moving

发之前Before you post

Social media is advertising
PFA compliance review before first use
No product names, no promised returns
Borrowed posts must be rewritten for your own situation, and still reviewed

What to post? Two examples. If you have a private office, post photos of it. We have a great training space; when you come on Wednesday night, take a photo so people know you're still learning on a weeknight. Everyone wants to learn from someone who's moving forward.

The right-hand column matters just as much: social media is advertising. Anything you make, posts or videos, goes through PFA compliance review before first use. No product or rider names, no promised returns, no criticizing other companies by name.

You can borrow ideas from other people's posts, but read them first and rewrite them for your own situation. If the original talks about the author's own family, copying it word for word just makes you look careless. And once rewritten, it still goes through review before it's posted.

5. Referrals Come from Beating Expectations

REFERRALS

满意度 = 实际体验 − 预期Satisfaction = experience − expectation

Expectations too high

Check into "the best hotel in the world" with that expectation, and even excellent service disappoints

A little more than expected

Expect 10, receive 11, and people remember you

Referrals are the easiest business: the client hands you years of relationship and trust with the name

The last sales question: why do some clients introduce friends to you on their own? Referrals are the easiest business there is. A client introducing a friend is far easier than developing someone from scratch, because the years of relationship and trust between them come to you along with the name.

The answer is one phrase: a client experience that beats expectations. Satisfaction equals the actual experience minus what was expected.

An example: on one trip we booked a famous "seven-star" hotel billed as the best in the world. Honestly, we came back disappointed. Looking back, the service was excellent, but we went expecting "the best in the world." Set the expectation at 20 and deliver 11, and even great service disappoints. Flip it: someone expects 10, you give 11, and they remember you.

So it isn't about the absolute level; it's a little more than they pictured. Next slide: how.

I've Never Been Treated Like This"

REFERRALS
1

Mooncakes are the baseline

The same box, plus cups, tea and a tray with a calendar on the back

2

Treat key clients differently

For a family fully insured with you: what would make them introduce friends like themselves?

3

What sticks is feeling valued

A proper family dinner, with the extra dishes packed for them to take home

A Mid-Autumn gift set on a wooden table: mooncakes, a tea tin, two cups and a wooden tray, tied with champagne ribbon

When you serve clients, aim for one feeling: they've never been treated like this before.

An example. Sending mooncakes at Mid-Autumn is great; remembering to send them is good client care. But mooncakes are the baseline; everyone sends them. Take the same box and add tea cups, tea leaves and a tray with a year's calendar printed on the back, and the client says, "Wow, I've never seen anything like this." That's beating expectations.

Second, treat your biggest clients differently. A client placing thirty or forty thousand a year with you isn't an ordinary client. Ask yourself: what would make them introduce friends in a similar position? If they're willing to hand you those long-standing friendships, everything gets easier.

For a family fully insured with you, say, invite the whole family to a proper dinner: a private room, a full table, and everything left over packed up for them to take home. What they remember isn't the meal; it's feeling valued. After that, the introductions follow. It's just one example; think about what yours could be.

The Line on Gifts

COMPLIANCE

可以Fine

Holiday gifts and meals as a thank-you
No strings attached
Within your state's limits

不可以Not allowed

Gifts or hospitality as an inducement to buy
Giving any part of the commission back
That's rebating, illegal in most states

Beating expectations takes care, not money

After talking about gifts, we have to draw this line. Thanking clients is fine: holiday gifts, taking them to dinner to say thank you. The conditions are no strings attached and staying within your state's limits.

What's not allowed: using gifts or hospitality as an inducement to buy, as in "buy this and I'll give you that," or giving any part of your commission back to the client. That's rebating. It's illegal in most states and against company rules.

Back to the last slide, then: with the mooncakes, the cups and the calendar, what moves the client isn't the price; it's the thought. Beating expectations takes care, not money. How to actually ask for referrals is in Eight Ways In, under existing clients.

Presenter note

The specific rules on rebating and gifts are in the Compliance Handbook. If asked about dollar limits, defer to your state's rules and the compliance department; don't guess a figure on the spot.

Read second

How to Close Every Sale

Same author; read it once you can sell and want the next level

To finish, one series and two books.

The series is 《蛮好的人生》, starring Sun Li as an insurance saleswoman. Required viewing for anyone in insurance, and worth rewatching if you've seen it. There's so much selling technique in it that it could fill a training session on its own.

The two books are by Joe Girard. He sold Chevrolets, not Mercedes or BMWs, and still held the Guinness world record for sales. Read How to Sell Yourself first, then How to Close Every Sale.

If you're completely new, these books may not feel like much yet. Read them once you can already sell and want to reach the next level, and they hit hard. That's the five sales questions; next come three questions about building a team.

1. They like me. They just won't sign.

They like every post, nod through the whole presentation, you've bought them dinner and dropped off mooncakes, and still nothing. The usual reflex is "I didn't explain the product well," so you explain it for another two hours, or send another gift. Neither works.

A sale draws on two accounts:

The relationship account

Relationship account。

Dinners, gifts, chats, likes all go in here. Past a point, they like you as a person.

The commitment account

Commitment account。

Whether they believe in what you do, enough to hand you their money and their family's protection. This is the account a policy is paid from.

Plainly: they like you, but they don't trust you with this. The relationship account is already full; more deposits there do nothing. Start depositing in the commitment account.

How to fill it: bring someone in

Sometimes a client's question tells you at once: they understood fine; they don't believe you. Don't rush to answer the question itself. Whatever you say won't land. Bring in a CFT or manager with more weight than you, and let someone else say the same thing.

Two real cases

A partner had settled everything with a client: the numbers checked out, dinner had happened, it just wasn't closing. The manager spent under half an hour on the phone and it closed. The client had heard plenty from the partner; they needed one more voice adding a little more.

Another partner's client asked, "On the guaranteed rate, does my policy lapse?" Not a hard question, and the partner answered it. The answer wasn't the problem. In that moment the client didn't trust the partner enough, and needed someone else to say the same thing.

The skill is sensitivity: noticing when to stop building rapport and bring in leverage. How to set that up, and what B tells A beforehand, is in Field Training · the ABC triangle. For the guaranteed-column question itself, see Index Strategies.

2. I gave it everything and they still didn't buy

Two-hour meetings, numbers sent, three months, five months of follow-up, and nothing. Here's why: every sale has two variables, the client's temperature and yours.

What it looks like
Already understands why insurance matters
Knows insurance is important
Neutral, indifferent
Slightly resistant
Thinks insurance is a scam
Strongly hostile to the whole industry

The closing line is +3°C. Add the client's temperature to yours; only above +3°C does a sale happen.

Client −3, you 3: you reach neutral, no sale
Client −3, you 6: you reach the line
Someone else, or time, already warmed them to −1; you don't need to do much

Your temperature is product knowledge plus sales skill. A new agent might be 1°C, a manager 3°C, and it climbs to 5 or 6 over time. So before each meeting, answer two things: how warm is this client, how warm am I, and can I close this one right now? If not, do what question 1 says: borrow someone warmer.

The handbag story

You look at a designer bag, the first salesperson walks you through everything, the price is too much, you say you'll think about it. Four days of scrolling reviews later, you want it. You go back, a different salesperson barely does anything, and you pay on the spot. The first salesperson and those four days moved you from −6 to −1. Time and outside information warm a client up too.

When the client is at −6°C

Don't grind on them. Nothing wastes more time. You can't change your own spouse's mind; you won't change a stranger's. −6 today isn't −6 in six months. Set them aside and let time work.

And one for you: a hostile client drains your energy. If you booked two hours and fifteen or thirty minutes in you can tell it isn't happening today, close politely, "I won't take more of your time today, let's find another time," and leave. Don't sit through two hours and lose your afternoon appointments with it. Energy is what sells.

Note: this temperature is about attitude toward insurance. The "relationship temperature" in Breaking the Ice is about how well you know each other. They're different scales; a close friend can easily be −3°C on insurance.

3. The first policy closed. The second won't.

The client bought a million in coverage and you want a second: the wife is covered but not the husband, and you're one case short of a trip or a promotion. They won't do it, or they buy the second one from someone else.

Always: selling is trust, and without trust there's no sale. A client buys because they hold a balance of trust in you, and every sale draws that balance down. Like a credit pull when you buy a house: each one knocks the score down, and it takes time to rebuild.

No new source of trust

  • Before the first policy: a high balance
  • The client makes a big decision (policy one); trust is spent
  • The balance falls below the deal line; policy two won't move
  • Overdrawn: a second decision is hard to get

A new source of trust

  • A manager or senior advisor
  • A third-party expert
  • A client referral or testimonial
  • A new angle and a new voice refill the balance; policy two gets easier

More product explanation or another one-on-one won't help. It isn't the product; it's trust. Two ways out:

The knowledge account can always be topped up. Once the trust account is overdrawn, it needs a new source.

4. Why clients decide whether to trust you before you meet

Have you followed a local real-estate influencer? You've probably never met her, yet you feel you know who she is, what she does and how she lives. That's the goal: by the time a client meets you, they already know who you are. You skip "who I am, how long I've been here, how qualified I am, what my team is," and both recruiting and selling go faster. Recruiting shows it most, since it's often decided in a single meeting.

Social media is advertising. Anything you make goes to PFA compliance before first use; no product or rider names, no promised returns, no criticising other companies. You can borrow ideas from other people's posts, but read them, make them about your own situation, and still get them approved. Rules: Compliance Handbook · advertising and seminars and Compliance Handbook · social media and WeChat.

5. Why some clients send you their friends

Referrals are the easiest business there is. A client introducing a friend hands you years of relationship and trust along with the name, which beats starting from zero every time. The answer is one phrase: a client experience that beats expectations.

Satisfaction = experience minus expectation

Check into the "best hotel in the world" with that expectation and even excellent service disappoints. Expect 10, receive 11, and people remember you. It isn't about the absolute level; it's a little more than they pictured.

The line on gifts
